One of my favourite books about growing up. About an adopted boy trying to fit into his new life, who falls in love with his neighbour. Chock full of adventures and good clean fun. Set in the West Indies, it describes a somewhat typical childhood about growing up in the islands.

This one holds a lot of nostalgia for me.

I first read this book when I had just entered secondary school at around 11 or 12 and was such a treat to revisit.

It's a coming of age story, about a boy named Beppo who after being adopted from a life poverty, developes a crush on his new nextdoor neighbor's daughter, only, his adopted father and neighbor, Ms. Belmont, have been feuding for quite sometime. It's set in rural Jamaica, features a cast of colourful characters and illustrates boyhood in a way that really resonated with me as a child.

I'd highly recommend if you're able to get your hands on a copy!

Reading the book was like watching a Jamaican Creole-language romantic drama anime. I loved and read the book as a whole, though I currently remember some parts from the book. When I read the book, the F.U.N. song "Some Nights" played in my head.

Daphne had a crush on Beppo all along, hence the reason for treating him so horridly.

I read this book when I was about 12? I was in form 1 high school.

This is hands down the most impactful book of younger years. Something about it just lingered with me since.

It’s a must read and I feel like that was the perfect time for me to read it. We did it for Lit and analysing the book was truly a joy.

I want to re-read this soon, hope I can either find my copy or get a new one.

I had to read this for my literature class, and to be honest, it was the second book that my school assigned us to read that I thoroughly enjoyed. I really liked how Beppo narrated the book, especially in the last chapters. He shared his life story and made it super entertaining with his jokes and wording. I really had no problems with any of the characters, except for one. It's not even the main antagonist. It's Roy, Beppo's best friend. I won't say I'm upset that Beppo met Roy, because I'm not. Meeting Roy greatly developed his character, since Beppo thought he had to be like Roy for them to remain friends. Which I don't think is so because their friendship sprouted from the many similarities they shared.

Roy undoubtedly was a bad influence on Beppo, introducing several overage activities to him, theft and overall being a really horrible friend. The nicest thing he had ever done was introduce Beppo to his independent lifestyle and taught him how to make use of the outdoors. If I were Beppo's parent, I would've done more than warn him about Roy's tactics.
