Seventeen-year-old Jaycie Lerner’s psychokinetic power surge is over, and her astounding powers are under control for the time being – sort of. As she struggles to maintain her humanity in the face of the awesome terror and responsibility of her abilities, she also yearns for the chance at a normal life – and a relationship with Matt Carter, the best friend she had to leave behind. But Matt’s got a few tricks up his sleeve, and he’s not about to give up on his feelings for Jaycie.

As Jaycie and her family grapple with the day-to-day routine of trying to keep their world together, Jaycie’s mother figure, Allison Young, endures a personal crisis of her own. The superhuman blonde possesses the physical equivalent of Jaycie’s awesome psychic power. So evolved, at ninety-two she still looks twenty. But what good is extended life when everyone else around her is so fragile? With no one to share her unusual life, she’s a uniquely lonely woman yearning for the romantic love she sees all around her. But in a dream she gets her wish – and it quickly turns to a nightmare for everyone else in her life. The memory of a rose is all she can hold onto in the storm of obsession that nearly sweeps her away.

Things quickly turn deadly for the vampires, but the Dey-Vah Guard fairies refuse to acknowledge there’s an imbalance in the nature they protect. As the danger gets ever closer to Jaycie and her family, the race is on to find answers before a secret plot can destroy them all.

My Thoughts:

First before I say anything else, let me just say that this is a BOOK TWO in a series.  This is going to have spoilerish bits with regards to BOOK ONE.  So if you have NOT read the first book – all you need to know is I LIKED THIS BOOK.  Now, stop reading here so you don’t ruin the first book, and go start reading it.  =D

This book has a lot going on in it, and I am not really sure what I can say that isn’t totally spoilery.   The synopsis sums it up fairly well.  In this book we not only focus on Jaycie and her trying to deal with her power but also with Allison and her loneliness.  There is also something amiss in nature and the Vampires get involved.  So we have the mystery of who is doing what, with whom AND some swoony romance thrown in.

Yes, it IS that hard to explain without spoiling the entire book! haha!

Action, mystery, suspense, romance, and paranormal super powers.  There, that about sums it up.

In Conclusion:

I enjoyed this book (my reading updates on Goodreads).  I’m not sure I would say I liked it “better” than the first in the series, Darwin's Children, but I certainly didn’t like it less.  I’m very pleased that Natasha Larry did not suffer from what is commonly referred to as “the sophomore slump”.   It is hard to find a series that can keep up strong writing and a heavy pace through the sequels.  Not only does Unnatural Law keep up the pacing but the storyline is further developed and the “mystery” of it is solid.  With strong female characters and a strong “family dynamic”, this series is a great example of what YA lit – should be.

I say you should definitely pick it up because I can’t wait to read the next in the series.

I do highly recommend reading the first book in the series Darwin's Children so you understand what is going on and know the characters, etc. before reading this one.

Mom Notes:

Contains some violence and some kissing.  Neither are “graphic”.

I am a huge fan of Natasha's book Darwin's Children, so I was super excited to read Unnatural Law. Natasha has really brought something totally new and exciting to the YA paranormal book scene. Yeah, there are vampires and even fairies, but not like any I've ever read about before.

Once again I was quickly drawn in to the character's lives. They are written in such a way that they seem very real. While I was reading Unnatural Law it felt more like I was hearing their voices in my head rather than just reading about them in a book. For me that is a huge deal because I really love reading books that are primarily character driven.

While Jaycie is struggling to learn control after her power surge a lot is going on in the lives of her family. Allison isn't feeling quite right, and doesn't really understand why. Haylee is learning more about her powers, and her family. Matt is learning that there is more to him than meets the eye, and dealing with not one but two protective "dads". While Mason and Johnny are trying to hold everything together in the midst of a weakening Dey-Vah guard.

Some of the highlights in Unnatural Law for me were meeting a few of the new characters, Sylvia Nash is probably my favorite new character. She is one of those women that you hope to get to know one day because you just know she will always make you laugh. Steven and Alonzo were both adorable and I'm hoping we will get to know them better in the next book. What I was really excited about as well was my favorite character from Darwin's Children returning. Matt! Oh how I love thee, and now I know why! I really enjoyed how Matt's character evolves in this book. I think Natasha nailed character development so completely. I feel like I know all these characters personally.

The writing is fast paced, easy to read, and witty as hell. The characters are lovable and their interactions are some of the best I've read. The heat between Matt and Jaycie is scorching hot (while remaining pretty innocent)! A book sure to be added to my favorites of 2011 list.

First off, the cover. I must admit that the cover for this second installment is much more appealing than the first. This cover somehow offsets the first one and I am finding myself liking the Darwin's Children cover more as seen as a set rather than on it's own.

Shall we talk about what's inside the cover, though? I loved this book! Author, Natasha Larry has created such an amazing series. I love that the focus still remains to be on love and family...or at least for me it is. This series is full of great, believeable characters, lots of humor and some kick butt action!

The relationships between these characters are what keeps me so intune and invested in this story. This is a highly character driven series...which I love! We not only got to know the main characters on a deeper level, but were also introduced to some new and exciting characters along the way. I am really enjoying the romance between Jaycie and Matt though. Matt has really grown through this second book and I have developed a VERY strong liking to this young man. Not only is he hot and funny, but his brain is wickedly sexy as well! What more could a girl ask for, really?

I honestly believe that this book and this series will be a huge success. It is something totally different from most other YA paranormal out there right now. The main thing that I love so much about this series is the strong family core...something severly lacking in most YA books today.

I can not say more really. If you are a lover of YA Paranormal? You MUST give Unnatural Law and this series a read. You will not be disappointed! Honestly! And Natasha? I am anxiously awaiting book 3! No rush, but I am waiting! ;0)

Continuing where Darwin’s Children left off, Natasha Larry’s Unnatural Law deepens the characters of the curious fairy/angels, while adding an interesting twist to evolution and the existence of superhero teenagers. The timing is pleasing, with slow revelations leading up to the twist, though an uncertain sense of coincidence lessens its force—most likely book 3 will reveal how such coincidences are orchestrated behind the scenes.

The writing is aimed at teenagers and I had a little trouble with some of the words, but that’s probably just me. I expected a technopath to fear rather than love technology, so I was surprised when the local genius appeared on the scene. And, given all the superhero powers, phrases like “Jaycie’s eyes almost popped out of the her head” conjured entirely the wrong image for me. The storyline probably does owe something to X-Men but, as one of the teenaged characters says, It “does differ enough to stand on its own.” Paranormal creatures add an extra dimension of mystery and danger, and Jaycie’s surge of power and subsequent loss is nicely portrayed. The teens explore their uncertain skills with very plausible spurts of over and under-confidence, making them quite likeable and believable characters.

Reader who enjoyed book 1 should certainly enjoy this sequel. The storyline moves forward pleasingly with a good sense of timing, the mythology is nicely but not excessively expanded, and the possibilities for the future as the tale evolves are sufficiently intriguing that I’ll probably look out for book three.

This novel picks up where the first novel in the series, Darwin’s Children, left off as Jaycie works to remember and understand her powers and abilities after her power surge. I very much enjoyed this novel, especially as Jaycie and Haylee have now begun to mature to a point that they’re extremely likable characters. While Jaycie does occasionally lapse in her ability to control herself, her selfishness and jaded personality has all but disappeared, and she really works to do what is right throughout this novel, endearing her to my heart.

As the characters and back-story was fleshed out in Darwin’s Children, this novel has less down time and much more action from the very beginning. There is a lot going on in this novel as Jaycie, Haylee, and her family struggle to figure out what is happening to Allison and who the mystery man is killing off the vampires. I spent a majority of this novel trying to figure out “who-done-it” and really enjoyed that aspect of mystery as well as the superb characterization. The fact that there are many key characters, yet they remain easily definable and don’t make the story difficult to follow, is a testament to Larry’s writing abilities. I think she’s refined her writing in this sequel and I cannot wait for more from her...

I love these books because they are so unique and the world building is very descriptive and imaginative. There are vampires and fairies but unlike any other Paranormal teen read out there today.
I love Jaycie, and watching her learn how to control her powers is an intriguing one that you really don't know what is going to happen, whether somebody will actually end up getting hurt or not because she has not control. I also love the ensemble of characters, we get to know more about each person from the first book as well as bringing in some new characters..and maybe the beginning of a love triangle?
The author has a great way of letting the story flow smoothly and great timing of events. 6 characters trying to figure out their own lives, yet intertwine with each other. I enjoyed the deeper look into the Dey-Vah guard. The Fairies, vampires and super human's intermingling into a flawless story that has a little bit of everything and not overdone or overwhelming at all. As nobody is quite feeling themselves these days this installment turns into a bit of a mystery to solve to see if all their ailments may be related.
I enjoyed this 2nd book just as much as the first, I am immensely excited to see what is going to happen in their story especially when Jaycie gets a grip on her powers and can start building on them. I'm excited to see what she can really do when she puts her mind to it.

Unnatural Law picks up where Darwin's Children left off - after Jaycie's power surge and now she struggles to control her unlimited power. Jaycie is depressed and moody, which makes her control even more tenuous. But Jaycie's not the only one going through a tough time right now. Allison, Jaycie's mother figure, is lonely. She wishes for someone she can be with and not put in danger because of her physical strength. Allison is now suffering from strange dreams and her abilities are 'off', misfiring and not where they should be. She's not the only one, either - the Dey-Vah Guard is weakening and the vampires are being killed off. Can everyone pull together in order to figure out what is affecting their powers and stop it before it is too late?

Unnatural Law is a great sequel to Darwin's Children. The characters are growing and their depths are being discovered. Ms. Larry has a way of creating emotion which leaps off the page - making the characters 3-dimensional effortlessly. Awash in unexpected twists and turns, Unnatural Law is an amazing book and I have no doubt Ms. Larry will go far! I felt the story was fast-paced, but didn't lose any of the detail needed to make a creative and original story which captures your attention from beginning to end.

A family of superheroes -- what's not to like?
No sophmore slump here.

Okay, second time around. There were a few small problems I had with the story, *coughs* Matt, but it was still a good story.

Pacing, decent.

characterizations, decent, but maybe it's me, but the characters were a little too perfect. "You almost killed me!" "I'm sorry!" "That's okay. I love you!" "Oh, I love you!!" *smooches* The characters could've been more dimensional. There was an effort made, but could be better.

story, needs more tension. I just knew everything would work out all right. Even when something was hunting them, I wasn't stressed out about it. They were The Brady Bunch, after all -- nothing bad ever stays bad for long.

worldbuiling, above average. Thank you, thank you, thank you! I've lost count of how many YAs and urban fantasy I've read that was supposedly dystopian, historic fantasy, or urban fantasy, and no research or effort at all was made. I don't care if you make up your own world or borrow it from someplace else -- I need to feel it, and smell it, and taste it.

Overall, nice, clean, fun story with a multicultural cast.

In this book we're dealing with the aftermath of Jaycie's power surge. Basically John, Allison, Haylie, and Mason are all rallying around Jaycie to help her try to learn how to control all of her power. It's not going so well. Jaycie is overwhelmed by her power and also she likes using her power against other people. Obviously she is causing some drama for all of her family because they have to do damage control.

I don't want to give anything away. This book has some amazing twists and turns. Jaycie's hot boyfriend Matt isn't what he seems. Allison is off. Her speed is off, her attitude is off, her hearing is off.. and we all know that nothing throws Allison off. There is something that is basically attacking the DeyVah guard and the answers to these questions will definitely throw you for a loop.

You're definitely going to want to check out this series. Natasha is weaving us a brilliant story. I've never honestly read anything before with this type of story line. If you're looking for something intriguing, mind boggling, and awesome, Natasha definitely delivers.

REVIEW: So impressed after reading this book! I have to say book 2 in the Darwin's Children series was great. I cannot imagine how hard it was writing these books. There is so much detail and things happening, yet you can easily follow it. Super impressed! This book was so exciting all the way through. The characters were still amazing, and I loved that Matt was brought into the story more. I really liked how there were several things going on at once that all tied into each other. Jaycie is trying to keep her powers in line after her surge, Haylee is learning about her ability, Allison is trying to figure out what is going on with herself lately, and Matt is the key to everyone's problems. There is also a few new characters in the story as well. Alonzo, a medium, was one that I really enjoyed. I can't say much more without spoiling. I read this book it two days. I seriously couldn't put it down. I loved this world that was created and its such a great, exciting, adventurous story!!! I was left begging for more! Natasha Larry, please tell me there will be more! Pretty please!!!!

While reading I kind of wanted to find something to dislike about it. Nothing big just a little something for me to shake my head at.
Why? I really don't know; I'll just do that sometimes.
But I'm happy to report that I found none.

The writing feels so real as do all the characters.
I'm trying really hard not to make this sound like the review I wrote for Darwin's Children, but really my feelings are still the same. Maybe just a little amplified.
From the beginning I felt myself getting caught up in the story, which again I've yet to find any other to match it. And I doubt I ever will, it's such an original story with... I want to say true to life characters but that doesn't even begin to describe them. There's somethings so comfortable about them.

I received this book in exchange for an honest review.

Once again, the connection with Jaycie and her family as characters is a strong one. I found myself being scared, relieved and saddened as the characters came to feel the same thing. The worst part of this book is that I only want to eat when they do, and since time for them is faster than it is for me, I ate too often.
This book has me feel like I am in Alice’s rabbit hole…curiouser and curiouser. The tension in the story is a slow building one; however you do not get bored or lost as you read. Instead you seem to be even more engrossed with what you are reading. When the peak hits, you have an idea, but don’t know the how, why, when or where…just the who. Then it does it to you again. This book amazes me and leads me to want to read the next!

The second installment of the DC series blew the hinges off! With the amazing character-building that Larry did in the first book, she was able to really throw this storyline into high gear. Without spoiling anything, I would like to mention the return of the Matthew Carter: love this kid!!! Jaycie is definitely maturing and her annoying, whining moments are fewer and less obnoxious. Haylee is, as always, awesome. The De-Vah return in greater capacity and the twists and turns never stop!... that is until the book ends... The humor between characters amps up, the action is greatly paced, and the storyline is addictive.
All-in-all: DON'T MISS THIS ONE!!!

I really liked the way this story unfolded. The book deals with the aftermath of Jaycie's surge (her powers surged, causing her to become much more powerful than she already was). She has to learn to control all this power, which is hard. It gets away from her sometimes, causing her to do things without thinking about the consequences.

Everyone's lives have been changed because of Jaycie's surge, and everyone's trying to settle into the new swing of things. We learn some interesting things about Matt, and wonder what exactly is going on with Allison.

This is a fun series, and I look forward to the next installment!

First Thoughts:

It was a fun read overall, I especially enjoyed that I didn’t have to read the first book to understand all the dynamics of this world. The author did a great job on integrating the events that happened in the first book while continuing the story at the same time. And the concept of this book itself was intriguing and filled with fun and I enjoyed it very much. With this story came laughter, suspense, mystery and the ever need for more time.

Plot:

The plot had all of the elements you expect to find, the rising action, climax, falling action and resolution. Though this didn’t necessarily end with everything resolved I felt that it did end with was right for this particular story. This is the second book of the series and therefore will have the nagging sense of need at the end though there wasn’t any cliffhangers per say. I found that though there were limited sub-plots the ones that were there helped contribute to the overall story. I felt that so much happened in this book, it was like all of the characters and story had to make a mark; to leave the reader with a sense satisfaction. Like I had mentioned earlier though I haven’t read the first book I’ve learned a great deal about this world and all that is involved and this book definitely had a lot of changes within the world that helped contribute to the overall plot.

Characters:

There were some likeable characters, there were some dislikeable characters and there were some lovable characters. Based upon the characters full creation was what helped me categorize these characters, some of them I felt fell flat where the author added them for only a few points on the overall graph of the plot and then there were the characters that hit almost every point in the graph but then there were the characters that shone above the rest, we as the reader were able to learn more about them and actually feel empathy towards them. Though I felt the minor characters had a few flaws they were needed in the overall plot of the story; without them the plot would lack important key points. So overall I did find them worthy of the story but in some categories lacking a few key elements to make them who they were. The main protagonists were the most real of the characters, each one had their own personality and we were able to get inside their minds and understand them; it allowed the reader to make a connection where some of the other characters repelled the reader.

Transformation of the Character:

There were a few transformation of characters in this story, while they were amazing to watch and see throughout the book they still were missing the final touches by the end; it was like perhaps these characters were making progress but had more transforming to go. But I mean we still were able to note a change within the character itself but there just weren’t any where I felt the transformation was complete. And while I found that some of the minor characters will never change I was able to see hints that perhaps some of the other characters will.

Description:

I felt that the description wasn’t overwhelming; it was well placed and didn’t drag the story out. The author did a great job on describing each place the character was visiting allowing the reader to distinguish between two “internal” worlds. And though I wouldn’t consider the description poetic it was very well written none the less and drew in the reader.

Style:

I really enjoyed the style of the book, I loved that the author was brave enough to switch the POV’s back and forth allowing the overall picture to become bigger. It really allowed the reader to become more involved in the story; to understand with a different clarity what was really happening. This was a story that really involved the reader and allowed them to become part of a world that isn’t necessarily better than their own but be part of something bigger than themselves.

Quote of the book:

“The pulse awakens the most dominant part of your personality and changes you into something else entirely.”

Goodreads Summary:

Seventeen-year-old Jaycie Lerner’s psychokinetic power surge is over, and her astounding powers are under control for the time being – sort of. As she struggles to maintain her humanity in the face of the awesome terror and responsibility of her abilities, she also yearns for the chance at a normal life – and a relationship with Matt Carter, the best friend she had to leave behind. Last Thoughts:

I recommend this to any fans of evolution, the pure idea that this author conjured up is creative and witty. I would also recommend this to any fans of paranormal; though this a little bit different than your average paranormal story it is fun and intriguing. I wouldn’t however recommend this to anyone who is absolutely against Darwin’s view of evolution and also to anyone who doesn’t enjoy a book that deals with powers of the paranormal. I enjoyed this book and look forward to continuing its plot and I definitely plan on going back and reading the first book of the series, though it isn’t necessary I do feel the need to become even more familiar with the characters.

Reviewed on Lili Lost in a Book

In this second installment of Darwin's Children, Jaycie is still trying to get a hold of her powers. Yes, her power surge is over, but she is now more powerful than ever and it's too much for Jaycie to handle.

Allison is acting strange, and no one knows why. She seems very distracted...about something.

The Core's Guardian fairies are weakening, they don't know why, but it's very dangerous...having that they can't protect Jaycie and her family.

Also, vampires are being killed, again nobody has a single clue as to why. But let me tell you something: these last three things I just mentioned? Yeah, they're connected. Suspicious...

I really enjoyed this book! I love characters who have some super cool supernatural ability, and this series is filled with them! You know, it wasn't till they mentioned it in Unnatural Law, but these books do remind me of X-Men! :D I love X-Men!

I have to admit, I felt like there was a lot going on in this single book, but once I got to the end I was like, "Ohhhh! So that's how all this was related!"

I really liked all the diverse characters Ms. Larry presented us with...plus we got to meet some new people! And can I say that I was very happy to see more of Matt ;) What he can do really shocked me! It's really very cool, though :)

Oh, and I just HAVE to say this: when I first read book one and it mentioned that Allison had blond hair and big blue eyes, it immediately reminded me of Allison from America's next Top Model. Allison is my favoritest model EVER!! I love her and her weirdness. Anyway, when I saw the cover for Unnatural Law I was like, "Wow, they could be twins!" check out this side-by-side picture:

Freaky, right?? And their names are even spelled the same! So cool! So anyway, as I was reading these books I always imagined Allison to look like this other Allison :)

Overall, I thought this book was pretty darn awesome. And I just found out, like five minutes ago, that there will be another book in the series :D It's called Common Descent and it's expected to be published sometime this year.

Why yes, I am excited for it ;)

Okay so I don't think this book was as good as the first but overall I think the series is pretty good.

So besides the characters I talked about in my last review there are a few new faces, first of all you have the Dey-Vah Gaurd who protect Jaycie's family each individual person has their own guard. If I'm honest I didn't like them very much they were too clingy but I think that was the whole point of them in the first place, there is also Alonzo but I won't say much about him because it will kind of ruin part of this story for you. We finally met Clarissa who is either John's wife or his ex, all I know is that I loved her she was so strange and funny at the same time.

So there is a huge difference in this story from the last one, first of all there is more danger. After Jaycie had a "surge" she can literally kill anyone with pure power if she's not careful, there is also danger from an unknown source and the Dey-Vah Gaurd and Jaycie's family have no idea who this new threat is aimed at. I love this because it was as if Jaycie had an alter ego and to experience a new side of her was brilliant, all of a sudden she wasn't this sweet daddy's girl but someone ready to rip someones throat out (that didn't sound disturbing at all). We also learn something new about Matt (I did not see it coming), I won't go into that either incase anyone decides to read this. Now onto the part of the review I hate doing the bad parts, so I thought this book went a little to slow for me but hey that's personal reference so it will probably be different depending on the person. I also thought there was too much build up towards the ending I can't really explain this but I know what I mean.

Overall I still thought this was a pretty fun book, and the ideas that Natasha has put into this story is great. I also thought she ended Unnatural Law on a very good note and I can't wait to see what she comes up with next.

An intriguing idea with a setting in Northern Alabama, which was a nice change, Larry offers readers a superhero set of characters that will leave many feeling satisfied.

Character development was not as strong as I would like to see in a sequel. I feel many of them were stagnant, but if readers enjoyed the first book it will not matter to most of them in the second, as long as Larry provides true development in the third.

The pacing of this novel was spot on. The author thrusts readers right into the story with zero lag time within the pages. While the plot was developed satisfactorily in the novel, as a reader I feel that the story should have been told through the eyes of one of the characters, preferably Jaycie. This is not a series that should be told with a third person voice. As readers we need to feel the characters, and in a novel such as this that first person point of view would have made a huge difference in the story’s delivery and development.

The strength in this novel lies with its multicultural cast, which is refreshing addition to YA literature, and I feel the novel will appeal to readers who enjoy YA urban fantasy.

Unnatural Law picks up where Darwin's Children left off. Jaycie is still dealing with the effects from her power surge. She still cannot remember what happened and now has all this power that she needs to figure out how to control. Allison is having a secret relationship. And if that's not enough, the Dey-Vah Guard fairies are weakening and the vampires are being killed.

I have to say that I enjoyed reading this one a bit more than the first book. I really liked that Matt was more of a main character in this one. He really came into his own and shocked me with what he can do. I love these characters and how they interact with each other. There is a lot going on all the time in this story but the author makes it work. I loved all the action, bits of romance and where the story is headed. Oh and how Mason and John use their powers on Jaycie and Matt just makes me laugh. The pink hot pants scene was funny, you’ll understand when you read it.

I’m looking forward to reading the third book and any future books from this great author. This e-book was provided to me by the author for review. This did not affect my review in any way.

Unnatural law(Darwin's book two)

This book picks right up from book one.. So I would suggest making sure to read first book. The teenagers keep on the path and our superheroes face twists and turns.
We have characters that we learn a lot more about this time around. Jaycie is trying to keep her powers under control, Haylee is learning about ability, Allison is just well she is figuring out everything , and Matt seems to hold the answers to all the problems. We meet new people along the way..Natasha keeps building the story line and development of each aspect of the books. Layers on layers would be the best way I can describe it. The storyline flows easily even with several things going on at once, your never lost. I see a book three coming down the pike. This story again has lead up to the need for more...if you want adventure this is the series for you... Once again, wonderful and fabulous addition to the series..

I received a copy from the author in exchange for an honest review. Unnatural Law picks up where Darwin's Children left off- with Jaycie's power surging now she can literally kill anyone with pure power. Everyone is worried about what can happen if Jaycie can't learn to control her powers and while all this is happening the Dey-Vah Guard is weakening and the vampires are being killed off. There is more danger and mystery in this book. There are lots of questions, like who is the mystery person killing off the vampires . I also thought she ended Unnatural Law on a very good note and I can't wait to see what she comes up with next.

I think it could have ended sooner and that would have made it more awesome.

I fucking love, looove Matt! What a character turn around... from borderline sissy to total, alpha male badass. Mmm. Smart, hot boys are fun. Plus, he's funny as hell with John.

It was a yummy, yummy read.

I don't really like the Dey-Vah, LMAO. They really need to get it together. Plus all that appearing out of no where shit... and they're all douchey.

I even loved Clarissa even though she's a psycho astral traveler.

Yay! Will read it again soon.
