Rate this book
Still getting over a bad breakup, ex-Army computer expert Matt Halston is a bit of a recluse with a strict routine that involves working too much, playing basketball with his best friend, and letting himself be dragged to parties when he’d rather be catching up on sleep. When he meets Christian Flannery, an out-and-proud college student, he’s immediately intrigued and finds himself going out of his way to spend time getting to know Christian.

When Christian makes it obvious that he sees Matt as more than just a friend, Matt is forced to re-examine his sexuality and take an honest look at his feelings. With unintended pressures from his friends and his own confusion, Matt has a tough time working through the challenges. While Matt faces his fears of intimacy, Christian’s facing his own issues paying for school and rent on barista wages. Can these two stubborn men find a common ground or will their obstacles prove insurmountable?

3.75 stars. A sexy and satisfying GFY about Matt, a straight, ex-military, IT technician and Christian a struggling gay college student. What raises this story above average for me is the thought the author has put into building up the relationship of her two MC's. We get to see two very different but very attracted people getting to know each other. We see the initially awkward and nervous dialogue, the little misunderstandings, and the bemusement on both their parts when their casual attraction turns serious and they struggle to adjust. I love it when they're both sitting in a restaurant and can't think of anything to say. It's funny and endearing.

I also appreciated the eventual inclusion of their friends into their lives as well. Usually in a romance the MC's live on love alone, but here their friends meet and you see them in a social setting as well as the bedroom. The sex is seriously hot as they move from casual to lovers, and for Matt, from straight to totally in love and lust with Christian. The way they talk when they're having sex is a real turn on.

I think just about any m/m fan would like this. It's a sweet, nicely written romance with appealing characters and the ever popular GFY theme.

Matt is a former army guy working in IT who broke up with his fiance about a year ago. His friend Sam is always hounding him to hook up with a chick but he's not interested. On his way to a party he nearly runs over a cyclist, only to find himself face to face with the guy at the party. However Christian doesn't hold a grudge and soon he discovers that Christian is a student who works at the coffee shop next to his work. They start chatting and Matt often drives him home if it's raining and they start hanging out. Then suddenly it occurs to Matt that Christian said he was gay and he starts to weird out. After another party (they run in the same circle) he drives a drunk Christian home who makes a move. After thinking about it Matt decides to try it out and after some fuck-buddy time they agree to try a relationship. It could be said it's GFY, but more like WCBY (was clueless before you). Because Matt starts noticing other guys and notes his porn watching has changed since meeting Christian. I liked that Matt really liked Christian as a person and a friend before he even thought about anything sexual. Matt was also a typical guy. He just didn't want to think about it and what it meant. He just preferred to do it and not analyze it which got him into trouble. The build-up to the sex scenes was very spicy with lots of anticipation and seeing Matt want to try things and not just be the "I'm the straight guy so I take but don't give" was good and Christian was kind of neurotic and funny. I'm wondering if Matt's best friend Sam (who moves in with Christian's best friend Trevor) have a story. Anyway, I really enjoyed this one, it moves slowly on the relationship front but both guys were so appealing and the build-up was fun.

I am contemplating between 3.5 and 4 stars, but then decide to go with 4 stars instead. While I'm skimming most of the love scenes after Matt and Christian enter their "fuck-buddy" then "a real couple" relationship phase, I think both men are adorable in their account and very likable. Matt is clueless (used-to-be) straight guy, until he realizes that he is attracted to the out Christian. While neurotic Christian, who babbles when he's nervous, and LOVE all seasons, is just cute.

I like how they are friends first, not quickly jumping the sheet. There is enough build-up to their coming together ... and the conversations are light and enjoyable, mostly because of Christian's bubbly trait (compared to the more silent and slightly less-social Matt). I think my friends here will know that kind of build-up is my kind of preference.

While Christian is out, and he tells Matt he doesn't want to be Matt's dirty laundry, but he does take time for Matt to be comfortable with his own skin and doesn't push on public display of affection. I like that. I like that they both compromise. More often GFY theme pushes the 'straight' guy into the out and proud situation. But Christian definitely eases Matt into it. Oh, and I am also glad that

It is sweet and enjoyable read ...

I really enjoyed this slice-of-life novel about an ex-Army computer geek and cute barista. Matt Halston is coming off a bad break-up – with a woman – and his friend Sam is constantly trying to fix him up with any available women they know. Matt isn’t interested, but when he meets Christian Flannery at a party he feels an instant connection with the other man. What begins as friendship quickly builds to more than that and Matt must re-evaluate his sexuality in light of his attraction to Christian.

What I really liked about Where You Least Expect it was that in this Gay-For-You story, there wasn’t a lot of angst and drama about Matt’s coming out. Yes, he had doubts, but they were dealt with matter-of-factly. At the core of this book was the slow build-up of Matt and Christian’s relationship and how they deal with things as a couple. As a reader who appreciates non-angsty novels, this was a charming break from high drama, intrigue and murder/mayhem.

Even though I have never read any of M. Durango’s books before, I am making note of this author. I truly enjoyed their style, wit and way with words. They go on my auto-buy list from now on. Recommended.

I liked this one for the most part.

Some continuity errors in the beginning were annoying. Some parts were pretty slow and were a drag.

There was way too much sex for my tastes though. And almost all of it was the same. The twink would blow the guy and get a hand job in return. It got tedious reading that same scene over and over again. Like 75% of the sex could have been cut and there still would have been more than enough IMO

This was at least for me, a nice, slow, angst free story.
Christian, a typical starving student and Matt a military vet working as an IT specialist.
Matt had to do some adjusting to not only being in a relationship, but being in one with a man.
I skimmed over some of the sex scenes, but after a lot of the stuff I read recently this was a relaxing read I enjoyed.

I like it that the author battles the common perception that --left unchecked-- will be accepted as 'truth.

A sweet gay-for-you tale. Not a lot of angst or conflict. Decent character development. A fantastic read if you're looking for sweet love between two men from very different backgrounds.

3.5 Stars

I liked this one, it was a fast, easy read with little to no angst. I call this a feel good story with MCs that I couldn't help loving.

I would have given this more than the 3.5 stars if this had been an OFY (still not the right definition but it's the best I can come up with), meaning the MC that has never been with a guy has been attracted to men before but had never acted on the attraction until Mr Right comes along. You know when the stars align and all he sees is hearts and stars floating around him....ummm yeah, when that sugary sweet romantic stuff happens.

Where You Least Expect It is a good story to read when you're looking for something fast and sweet. It's worth the read.

Whenever I pick up a story that has characters that are former military in it, I usually have high hopes but am braced for disappointment. M. Durango's "Where You Least Expect It" definitely didn't disappoint, and I found myself tearing through the book in one sitting, wanting to see how Matt and Christian's story played out.

Former Army, Matt is an anti-social IT guy who works late hours and gets dragged out into public so his well-intentioned best friend, Sam, can set him up with totally unsuitable women. Matt tells himself that he's just looking for a woman he can connect emotionally with, not a string of one night stands like Sam, even though Matt doesn't have the best dating track record. It's at one of Sam's social gatherings that Matt runs into Christian after almost literally running the man over earlier in the night. After that party, it seems like Christian is everywhere Matt looks, including his morning coffee shop, and Matt finds himself focusing more and more on the younger man.

An introspective character story rather than heavy on action, "Where You Least Expect It" follows the evolution of Matt and Christian's friendship into a deeper relationship and the issues they have to work out to get there. What I liked most is that Matt wasn't instantly smitten by Christian and he'd never thought of himself as attracted to men before, but Durango takes the time to explore what it means to Matt to question his sexual and social identity.

I also adored Durango's characterization of Christian, a senior in college who's out and proud, but willing to give Matt a chance. Christian understands that Matt has to work through the changes in his life, but Christian is by no means a pushover and he holds his own in the relationship. He makes concessions, but doesn't let Matt get away with repressing his emotions or pushing people away as Matt has done in the past. They have some rough spots, but between the two of them, they manage to talk about what's bothering them rather than just giving up.

If you like character-driven stories that cover all the exhilaration and anxiety of new relationships, or enjoy reading about tough guys who reach out of their shells to connect emotionally with their partners, then "Where You Least Expect It" is definitely for you!

This was an interesting story and couple. It's not a traditional OFY/GFY exactly. More like Matt is kinda clueless about who/what he wants. He had a long term girlfriend and then his friend keeps trying to set him up and he REALLY is not interested. Then he meets Christian. He likes him as a friend and he honestly didn't know that Christian was gay when he met him until Christian told him. Matt was really confused about his reactions to Christian and then when Christian tells Matt how much he wants him, all bets are off.

Matt spent a long time in the Army and has never considered that he was anything but straight. But then what does his reaction to Christian mean? Of course he struggles a bit with his reaction, but he just can't stay away from Christian. He's also worried about what his friends will think and he's not ready to be out yet. Of course Christian is apprehensive since Matt has never been with a guy before. He also is younger, still in school and doesn't make much money. All of these pressures on both of them lead to some misunderstandings, but both guys are motivated to not let what they have slip away.

I liked both MCs and the way their relationship grew throughout the story. I also liked the supporting friends. This is not an angsty, dealing with homophobes story. These guys are just smart enough to get out of their own way :)

What I liked...

- Matt and Christian bond before becoming lovers. It was sweet how quickly they connect, how comfortable and happy Matt was around Christian.

- Since the book is short, Matt does not dwell on him being gay for a long time. Yes, he has conflicted emotions, but it does not last long. Anyway, it is not a G4U story. Matt used to have a girlfriend, but it always lacked something.

- There are no seme nor uke in the relationship.

- I could relate to Matt, with the whole friends trying to meddle in his love (or lack of) life.

- Matt and Christian talked. If it seemed like it was going to be a misunderstanding, one pushed the other so they could be on the same page. First Matt with his nightmares, then Christian with his money problems.

- Matt's bff, Sam, quickly accepts his friend's sexuality, and there are no hard feelings.

What I did not like...

- Matt and Christian first time together. A blow-job without even one single kiss. Not one.

- Too much sex? Not that I am complaining, but there were times when Christian seemed tired (like, not enough sleep) so it was not unreasonable the time he snapped.

All in all, it was a sweet, hot MM Romance. I liked the beginning of their romance, the middle (because they had their own little fights) and the ending was cute.

I thought this was a great GFY/OFY story.

Matt is an ex-military, IT guy, who is kind of anti-social. He doesn't have many friends, besides Sam and Allison and he's known them since childhood. Sam is constantly dragging him out to parties he doesn't like going to and trying to hook him up with girls just so he can get laid. Matt isn't like that and doesn't want that. He stresses how he wants to be able to have a conversation with the person he's sleeping with.

I LOVED how Matt and Christian met. I thought it was hilarious and a great story for the future when/if people ask.

Christian is a blonde spiked haired, college student, barista, who is out and proud. Matt and Christian immediately become fast friends, great conversation, easy to hang out with, fall into a routine. It was so nice to watch their friendship grow into something more. I thought Christian's personality worked perfectly with Matt's. I want to be BFF's with Christian!

I also liked how this was almost angst free. Sure there was drama, but it didn't drag out for pages. They acted like the adults they are.

I would have liked more of an Epi, but then again I always do ;)

I was worried this would be a "gay for you" - but was more a "well, I was an emotionally shut down soldier and so focused on my career I just never connected the dots" type of thing for Matt, one of the main characters. Both he and Christian are written well, as the story is. I really enjoyed the slow build (I swear if I read another story where they are in bed by page 8 without it being important to the plot I'm gonna scream). They move slow, but the story doesn't plod. And by the time they kiss, there is enough history there that is really means something.

Matt is very private, and has to think things through and is methodical about everything he does. The slow realization of his feelings for Christian knock him off kilter, and this made for interesting reading.

And Christian - with his spiky blond hair and upbeat personality, is so what Matt needs in the worst way. Loved that he was also a stressed out college student working to make ends meet as a barista. Both he and Matt were nicely fleshed out, non-stereotypical characters.

Enjoyable read.

This was a great story for a developing relationship and exploring what feels right and good to you.

Matt is former Army now working in IT, he was dumped by his longtime girlfriend a year before where we start in the book, his bestfriend Sam is usually trying to set him up, if not for something longterm, at the least someone for the night, which Matt is not interested in.

At one of the parties, he meets Christian, a young out and proud gay man - turns out they'd met before the party, but I don't want to spoil too many details!

Matt thinks he is just becoming friends with Christian, but then it occurs to him that Christian may be attracted to him, so he has to try and sort out how he feels about that, how he feels about Christian, and what direction, if any, their friendship will go...

Great characters, developed, very real conversations as well as misunderstandings and Christian has a great amount of maturity with the whole situation.

This was my first read by this author and I will definitely be checking out more.

This one left me with Warm Fuzzies, which is never a bad thing!

I've been reading a bit too much action-y stuff lately, so I was really needing a simple, relationship-centric, low-drama read, and this definitely delivered! Not that there wasn't drama, but it was the comfortable sort, of people working out their differences as they feel their way toward a stable, lasting relationship. Matt and Christian move slowly into a relationship; there's no Insta-Love, just a slow burn that develops into a real, friendship-based relationship. I especially like that sometimes they disagree, and they fight about stuff -- loudly, even -- but ultimately, whether it takes just a few minutes or a few days (or longer) they're able to put the high feelings away and talk it out until they can eventually reach an accord. Just like real life, it can get messy, there are misunderstandings, but there's genuine feeling underneath that shows through.

This should have landed on my DNF pile because it was a struggle to get through. The way the 3rd person POV was done made the characters distant and hard to connect with. The use of pronouns like him and his would have seriously cut down the constant repetition of the character's names. Remember when Titanic came out and everyone made of fun of the constant "Jack! Rose!?" I think they said each other's names 75 times each in the movie. Well, this book beats that number by chapter 5. The names Matt and Christian are forever embedded in my frontal lobe. Seriously, what does Durango have against pronouns? I felt there was a lot of unnecessary detail that did not add to the story at all and the sex scenes were so frequent and repetitive that I eventually just skimmed them. Spice it up a bit! Several plot points were never resolved and at the end I was just left with a feeling of, what was the point?

I really liked the first 1/3 of the book as their tentative friendship slowly became something more as Matt realized he was attracted to Christian. After they got together there was a bit too much sex for my taste, but I still wanted to know what happened to them. Plus it was really refreshing that they actually talked with each other and tried to work out their problems. Big kudos to the author for not generating conflict for the sake of angst or breaking up the MCs so just we could watch them get back together. The secondary characters were also great. I loved Matt's best friend's reaction to his coming out.

Three and three-quarter stars. Where to start? This book was, to all intents and purposes, Matt's story. And watching him progress his relationship with Christian was lovely. Yes, Matt was closed off in terms of emotions, but I liked that Christian called him on that and Matt realized what he would lose if he didn't open up. There was one thing (for me) lacking: it would have been nice to get inside Matt's head more as his relationship with Christian developed. He seemed...very relaxed about the sexual aspect of their relationship, even though he'd never been intimate with a man. Knowing what he was thinking would have helped, especially as I found the sex scenes slightly...methodical in places. In spite of that I did enjoy the book and I look forward to reading more by this author.

I. JUST. LOVE. MATT. AND. CHRISTIAN.
And this sums it all.! XD

But let's start from the beginning.
At every freaking page I was thinking, "Be still my heart, now the author's gonna screw up everything in the next page". But that never happened, ever. Yes, I was anxious the whole time because I became fond of the two MC's! ♥
This book was a very good read. Wait, what am I saying, good? It was great, no, amazing.
I loved it so much.

Cute story about an IT guy (ex-military) and a student/barista. I really enjoyed how their relationship progressed, it was insta interest not insta love and went from there. Matt had his moments of doubt and just plain freaking out but he wasn't overly assholeish about it and came to except his feelings in the end with minimal drama. Christian for his part was supportive not pushy. They deffinitly had their ups and downs but you could tell that they would be ok. Overall good story with good writing.

Would recommend to anyone wanting a nice slow build romance.

The story was pretty well written and pulling enough. The storyline is mostly about a getting together or becoming a couple between Matt and Christian. The first half of the plotted book was enjoyable, but the second part was focused mostly on sex, sex, sex... I was really getting sick of it. Sure Matt and Christian argued a lot, but everything was solved with sex. It became to bland.

I really liked this book, felt that I could see the process of how Matt and Christian became a couple. Only thing I didn't like was that, even though it was 3rd person, we only got to see Matt's POV. I would have liked to have seen a little bit into Christian's head as well. But I would definately recommend this book.

I really enjoyed this one! No real angst, a nice, reasonable relationship progression, and likable characters. I feel the ending came together a little too neatly (with a pretty pink bow and everything :D) but that is easily overlooked because it was such a sweet story.
