Seven days more to go and I will be meeting Manix Abrera in person. He is one of my bookclub's guests for our monthly book discussion. Obviously, I am soo prepared. I will ask him to sign my copies of all the 8 books in this bestselling komiks series, KikoMachine Komix. Also, I've read them all! Hardcore! Asteeg! RakenRol!

Except #2 and #7 (this book), all of the rest, that means all the other six books got 3 stars from me. Three stars here in Goodreads means I liked it! and when I say I like it, I mean it. I am not trying to like this because it is unlikely for a reader of literary stuff to like komiks. Hey, I still have my funny bones intact in my body even if I have passed the midpoint of my life here on earth. I am also not reading and positively reviewing this because Abrera agreed to grace our book club discussion. I read the first book in this series in May 2011 when I still had no idea who Manix Abrera was.

So, this and #2, Mga Tagpong Tila Nagpapaka-Weird, Kunyari Pa-Deep, Sarap Sapakin…, are, in my opinion, the two best books in the series. Well, for #2, maybe I was still not convinced after reading #1, Kikomachine Komix Blg. 1 so I was like, this guy can't be real. However, the in-your-face title of #2, really caught my attention. So, he knew! He knew what I was thinking about him, a T.H. (trying hard) guy posing to be deep (sublime) when in fact that he was a shallow writer and he was just using komiks form to be funny. But when I read writeups about his personal life and that book #2, KABLAM! He really is a deep, rather or far from shallow.

This book #7 is the most innovative, in my opinion. By this time, I am used to his regular antics. I've written all about them in my previous reviews. What made this one different are the inserted strips in horizontal format: Sya Si Boy Diamante, Kuwentuhang Pag-Ibig, The Story of Rose, Oo, Akong Hinati ng Gabi, and Behind the Scenes. I particularly liked Abrera's imagination in Hinati because only genius can think of that and Abrera's creativity in Behind. I don't want to give anything away as I think these two are among the three highlights of this book.

My favorite, however, is Kuwentuhang Pag-Ibig particularly the story of the clean-shaven lady professor. It is not mushy but it hits the reader straight to one's heart. This could be expanded into a full-length movie. I imagine an actress like Mercedes Cabral or Jennylyn Mercado playing this role. It can be a potential hit. It will not even be costly because the setting will just be in a toilet and she can be alone like Tom Hanks in Castaway for almost the whole stretch of the movie.

This also made me think. If I were an Abrera's character in those strips and asked what was my kuwentong pag-ibig (love story, for my foreigner friends), what would I tell? As DJ, Mr. Fu (103.50 Wow FM Labas Dila 8-11 M-F) says "Why not? Go!"
That's enough. That's more than 2 pages of Abrera's strips. I just wanted to share the story of my first love because Abrera made me reminisce while reading his Kuwentuhang Pag-ibig portion in this book. This is your fault, Manix.

-ZOMG! Breaking the 4th wall!
-KABUTIHAN! HAHAHAHA!
-The camwhore! Woo! Hahahaha!
-Bertong Badtrip with posse? Hahaha!

{Sa wakas, nakahanap na rin ako ng kopya nito! *hikbi*}

The weird, metaphysical, melodramatic, morbid themes (plus Bertong Badtrip and university humor) of volume six continues here in Kikomachine Komix #7, only more hardcore! Only a mind like that of Manix Abrera could conjure strips like OO, akong hinati (literally ha) ng gabi and Behind the Scenes. Pure genius. I have too many laughs in this volume. Dancing Sto. Nino? Creepy and funny. Diamond peel? Morbid, gory and funny as hell. MRT snippets. Sad and funny as f*ck. Haha!

Hehe.. Manix' powers of wit, humor, intellect and cultural commentary are in full display. Naks! Ayos din yung play niya on "behind the scenes." Can't wait for Kikomachine 8! (May rhyme talaga?)

One can say this about all of the komix in this series: Manix Abrera can talk about philosophy, abstract ideas, and social ills with wit and humor, and still manage to be accessible and not at all condescending.

I think I laughed more here than in the previous volume. Can't wait for the next chapters in this saga.

Naks. ;)

May kwentung pag-ibig (Yay!), may kwentung pagkaka-ibigan (BFF!), may gore (yuck!), may katatakutan (Really? Ows? Multo ka ba talaga?), may adbentyur (Yahoo!), at iba’t-iba pang kawerdo at kakornehan (Ur soh baduy! Ewws!).

A good friend let me borrow his copy of this comic compilation by Manix Abrera. I've been a conscious fan of Abrera ever since my first year in High School (my former crush looks like one of his mainstay characters). Until now, his comic strips (Kikomachine Komix) continue to appear on our daily household staple—the Philippine Daily Inquirer—along side his dad's comic strip (A. Lipin) which features PDI's very own mascot, Guyito.

I can always relate to the stories featured in Sorrowful, Sorrowful Mysteries! Reading through the seemingly unorganized topics covers me into a fur ball of inside jokes only Manix—through his art and wit—can convey.

P.S. You'll have fun meeting Boy Diamante among others.

First one I've read among the compilations :D It got me started, and that's something. It made me decide to get all the compilations for the times when I need a good laugh.

These comics are a good example of how humor can be used to make simple readers (readers who don't have much time on their hands to go to lectures, read histories, and get daily updates about new bills, for example) aware of societal issues. Since humor is generally pleasurable for everyone, it is not hard to convey ideas.

Simula hanggang huli, SOLID COMEDY. Husay mo talaga, sir Manix Abrera! \m/

Ang bilis ko lang nabasa.

I'm not sure if that's a good thing or not.

Anyway.

(Premonition kaya? Hmm...)

Ang benta sakin nung Boy Diamante!

Ang galing talaga ni Manix mag-isip. At lalong ang galing magdeliver!
