Kathy Pennington thinks her world ended when her mother died. But at the funeral she meets a great-uncle she never knew she had. That's when the trouble really starts. Someone tries to kill her, her uncle kidnaps her, she meets her grandmother for the first time, and Kathy learns about a family secret that literally changes her world. All Kathy wants to do is go home. Her grandmother has a different idea. So does the assassin stalking Kathy. If Kathy is to get back to Chicago, she is going to have to survive dangers she never imagined-- most especially, the danger of being a princess. A science-fiction novel about family secrets, empires, and new worlds full of deadly wonders.
Basically a fairy tale about a young teenage girl (who is unaware of the fact of her royalty) being thrust into a new world and told she must behave as her birthright demands. As you can imagine a teenage American, who of course has been raised with a lot of personal freedom, doesn't take well to strict standards that are set for her. The world she is taken to is more rural, almost no machinery, and has pretty strict ideas about a woman's dress and actions. Most of the book is based around the young American butting heads with her old fashioned grandmother, who is Empress, and her uncle. The only real complaint I would have is that a lot of the book involves no real action. You get a lot of waiting around for something to happen. It did keep me entertained however. It wasn't even until about 3/4 of the way through the book that I realized that nothing hadn't happened in a good long while. I look forward to the next book.
I really liked this book, aside from the fact that it was SO slow going until the last few chapters! It took me forever to read, and even though it was a long book, it took a lot longer than it would have if it hadn't been quite so... boring? I liked the characters and the storyline. It just went too slowly. Maybe I'm spoiled on too many fast paced supernatural thrillers? :)
This is a well-told story of a girl who discovers she is a princess of another world beyond Chicago. He had me hooked, even though I read the novel on my iPhone's tiny screen. The gerbil is a nice touch.
Available via Kindle, it is clear that it is self-published (needs some minor editing).
