Boston 1962 first edition (stated) Little Brown. hardcover octavo. VG++ just slight toning of white cover; in VG+ dj (dj is price ciplioed and backstrip is somewhat toned; almost no wear on dj.) no owner marks. DJ designed by Seymour Chwast. Amusing novel about life, love and revolution in final years of Batista's Cuba.
Nothing special, though it has its moments, but my main reason for registering it is that it wasn't previously in the Goodreads archives and the author certainly deserves that much (posthumously, as he died at the age of 44). Essentially, the story uses its main character - Jonathan Weller - to paint a picture of Cuba during the period leading up to the communist revolution. It is more a subtle picture than a vivid one, leavened with some nice humour, thrown in almost as an aside. Jonathan is one of America's idle rich, but in his developing relationship with local girl Celia he seems to be finding a purpose in life. I'll leave you to find out how that plays out, as any elaboration would spoil the plot. Don't be put off by the publisher's efforts to portray it as a racy novel, this is not a potboiler and sex, gambling, drugs, oppression and revolution are merely side issues to the human stories that are being lived through Miller's pen.
