Great for new parents. Uses a lot of illustrations and short sentences. Quick, simplified introduction to help caregivers when interacting or making the most of their interactions with children.

An accessible version of More than Words by Hanen, using cartoons and illustrations. A quick read, but from what I can remember it covers most of the points in More than Words (which is a big textbook). Hanen is a good introductory therapy for children with a new diagnosis of autism / have more severe autism, but this therapy is of limited use further down the track.

(In a controlled trial in 2011, children who played with a greater number of toys at the start of the Hanen program did not show significant improvement when compared to the children who did not attend the Hanen program. See http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/21...)

You Make The Difference in Helping Your Chid Learn is a short book of illustrations and bullet points to help parents understand how to connect and communicate with their young child(ren).

I was tidying in the attic this week and came across this book, which my mother-in-law gave us when Alice was younger. I decided to read through it and found that the book really is aimed at parents whose children do not yet communicate with words and sentences (say age 2.5 and younger). Although I think that this book is very readable for newer parents (short and to the point), many times I felt like I wanted more fleshing out of the concept.
