DJ Randall is having a ball riding her horse, Major in Letting Go. She is even taking classes that don’t interest her as much. This is because she knows it will improve her jumping and give her more experience. She is saddened to learn at one of these shows that some complete strangers talk about her beloved horse, indicating he is holding her back from progressing in riding.

All DJ wants to do in life is compete in the Olympics on her horse. It seems that advice is coming from different avenues, indicating she can achieve her goal – but not with Major. When an injury to her gelding puts him out for the rest of the season, DJ questions if this is the end of her riding career.

This book starts with Darla Jean Randall showing her horse, Major, while following the directions of the judge. She was hot when the judge told them to line up. Major, an old police horse, had done everything she asked, but he was not a classy horse. As she left the arena she was amazed that she thought she heard her mother's voice cheering for her. Her grandfather assured her that she had done her best. Robert Crowder, her new step-father, observed that she had handled the woman crowding her well. DJ knew he had learned about crowding from Brad & Jackie, her biological father and his wife. After she ate, it was time to get ready again. This was her last showing at this show. Brad offered to help, but she didn't need it.

DJ's friend, Hilary, was jumping against known riders, something DJ wanted to do. Bridget, her trainer, asked what she had learned, and in reply DJ said that she had to watch sneaky tactics, and that she could do necessary thing weather or not she liked them. She went to say good-bye to Amy & Tony in stands. They were upset because a couple of guys nearby said that it was a shame her father, meaning Brad, didn't give her a decent horse to ride. DJ began to boil.

Another great edition to the High Hurdles series. DJ is forming an entrepreneurial greeting card business with her friend, Amy. Her horse, Major, takes an injury, and DJ is also going through a health/sleep-deprived crisis. A few happy things and surprises take place along the way... I'm eager to read the last two books in the series to see how it all ends!
