Catherine Gavin was born in 1907 in Aberdeen and educated at Albyn Place School and Aberdeen University. She lectured for a time in the History Department and then became a War Correspondent with Kemsley newspapers. She wrote mainly historical fiction, dramatising such events as the Russian Revolution and the battle of Jutland.
I recently finished reading a Companion Book Club edition of the book. This was/is my first Catherine Gavin book. I was pleasantly surprised and am very pleased to have read it. 1. Another Catherine, Cookson, Marchant .... I had never heard of this one. It was in a pile of CBC books I obtained. 2. I was completely ignorant about this aspect of WW1 described, except that I had heard about the Battle of Jutland (not a clue where it was) and the disputed claims of victory. 3. I spent a lot of time looking up the various places referred to. This hindered my progress with the story, frustrating but the story, facts and fiction, were worth it. 4. Didn't know about the Zeppelin raids. 5. The English (1968) was easy flowing and constructed with vocabulary and punctuation that I could relate to and enjoyed. 6. I keep the 5 rating for something exceptional.
