After three years in Boston attending college, Mallory Wells has come home to Casper, Maine to care for her father, who is dying from cancer. She left Casper without looking back, leaving her small-town life and everyone in it, behind. Including her sexy high school sweetheart. Luke Bates was devastated when Mallory left him for the city life. He managed to pull himself together and move on, even if only just barely. When Mallory shows up in town, Luke vows to stay away from her at all costs. So why does he keep checking in on her and her father, showing up when he's clearly uninvited? Maybe Luke isn't as 'over her' as he thought.
I don't know why I continue to read books that are just not good. This one was...well there was like no character development and the story just went so quickly there wasn't really much development of any kind. I thought Mallory was horrible, Luke seemed like a nice guy and I have no idea why they were ever together. Nothing really happened and it is like Mallory is all I want to live in this small town forever! No waits it has been 2 minutes I love Boston and will go there! No waits, maybe I love small town! I do what I want and I don't care about anyone else!!! I just was really confused all the time as she couldn't make up her mind about anything - she would say one thing, then on the next page say the exact opposite. It made no sense and it didn't even seem like any of the characters liked any of the other characters (except they would say they did - the story didn't back it up at all). Not a good book.
What a phenomenal story. You have your romance, along with real world issues all wrapped up in one fantastic package. Everything was laid out in such a vividly realistic and visual manner that I feel like I lived this novel. This is one of those stories that brings tears to your eyes for multiple different reasons. I cried both sad and happy tears throughout. The novel had a very mellow & down to earth pace that fit well with the plot and subject matter while still keeping you interested and caught up in the story.
The characters in this novel were brilliant. I can’t remember the last time that I was so invested in the lives of two characters in a novel, let alone the entire cast. They were all realistic and real people dealing with real world issues. It was great. My only issue with any of the characters was Rainy. Everyone knew something was up with her. Heck, the characters even know what it is. Unfortunately Pendleton doesn’t fill her readers in on this. I’m sure we’ll find out what it is later in the series, but it was talked around so many times in the novel that not knowing is driving me loopy.
Overall, this was a brilliant novel that I definitely read in a single sitting. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend to anyone. The author had my emotions tied in knots and had me guessing what would happen next, while taking me on a very spectacular will they won’t they journey. I can’t wait to see what else she comes up with.
The premise of the book drew me in and normally I fly right through books, but this book....*sigh*. It's such a struggle for me to want to read it. Mallory is a girl that grew up in a small town and escaped the first chance she got to the city of Boston. After finding out her father has cancer she returns home after 3 years of refusing to ever visit him and making him come to her to pretend to know how to care for him. What she doesn't count on, is running into her ex Luke that she dated all through high school and ultimately dumped at the prom because he didn't share her dreams of getting the hell out of dodge. Luke has become close with her father and between that and a small town, they run into each other everywhere and they have to figure out their feelings and how to reside in the same town, at least for the time being.
I can't stand the character of Mallory and I can't figure out why Luke is all goo goo eyes at her and kind want to smack him out of it. I find the female lead to be very selfish, whiny and immature and I just couldn't get into the story at all and found myself not caring what ended up happening to the characters at the end :-/
This is a book about a girl called Mallory who leaves her small town and never looks back, she leaves her boyfriend Luke of four years, who being two years older than her had put off college so they could go together, she leaves her father who'd raised her from being a baby when her mother ran off, he's also sick but she's too self absorbed to notice and she leaves her friends. She's called back because her father is dying from cancer, once back she's thrown back into small town life. Now this book could have been so good, it had so many great characters, Luke of course was wonderful, her father Joe was amazing, her friends Gabby and Rainey also Baker and Wolfe. With so many positives why did I score it so low, Mallory, I couldn't stand her and as far as I could see she had no redeminable features. She was spoilt, ok I can see that her dad would spoil her since her mother ran off but she's selfish and shallow I found myself skimming quickly through her sections simply because I couldn't stand to read anymore of her self serving pity. I know she's supposed to be stubborn but she just comes accross as pigheaded and by the end I just wanted Luke to run as far as he could in the opposite direction he deserves so much better. I'm aware from reading some of the other reviews that I appear to be alone in this so maybe it's just me, just glad I didn't pay for this it's free on iTunes at the moment .
My god, the female lead is insufferable. I want him. Actually, I don’t want him. Wait, I do want him. Now I don’t. I do! No, no I don’t. But what if...? Goddamn it, woman. Make up your mind! (I’m sorry. “Little girl” is more appropriate.) I liked most of the other characters, more or less, but the plot was just fine. Just meh. 3 stars!
Edit: I had to change it to 2 stars. I had to. As time goes by I keep getting progressively more and more mad at this book. The constant nagging from pretty much everyone about how he should completely give up his life as the ultimate sacrifice in order to have her when she did nothing for anyone except being selfish and annoying (which she was pretty good at, I gotta give it to her), is way beyond my understanding. Ugh. Not good.
Couldn't even finish it do to my constant irritation with the heroine! She was annoying, selfish and her mood swings gave me a headache! I really need to start waiting until reviews are available before buying books. My wallet and my temper would be thankful!
Been wanting to read this bad boy for awhile now! Mallory is a responsible girl, "dad, relax. I settled everything before I drove up. The bank granted me a leave of absence. You know I would never leave without getting things in order." You can tell there's some s*** going down and on between Ms. Mallory and Mr. Luke, "that's right, princess, not all of us get a free ride to college and a job that pays gobs of money and takes up so much of our time that we don't have time to pay a visit to our dying father." Nothing like hitting below the belt Luke but it's okay because she snaps right back up and kicks you while your down, "you thought I knew? You thought so little of me that you believed I would leave my dying father alone for all these years? You thought I was just some spoiled little girl running away from Daddy's cancer? I didn't know, and if I had, I would have stayed. I hope, though, that I would have had the good sense to dump you, even if I hadn't gone to Boston. You're a nothing, just like every generation of deadbeats before you. Get out of this house." I'd say they have some issues but when they're sweet to each it's really cute, "I have never, ever been more turned on or wanted to make love to a woman so badly." He grinned." I liked this book lots of drama, but there were those sweet moments as well.
Marking a book as DNF is not something I do very often. I usually try and stick with a book once I've started it. Unfortunately, I couldn't do that with Broken Promises. I made the decision to stop reading it at just 16%, at the start of chapter 4.
The female main character, Mallory, was annoying, selfish, and mean. I didn't like her at all and, therefore, I couldn't bring myself to care about her or what happened to her in the story.
The male main character, Luke, was mocked by Mallory, both in the present and in both of their recollections of the past, yet he found his old feelings for her re-surfacing and he had to try and control those feelings. That didn't seem realistic to me. I couldn't put myself in his position and understand how he could feel that way.
I see from other reviewers that this book has been worthy of 5 stars for them. I guess I'm in the minority in saying that I did not enjoy this book.
1. I really tried, but couldn't find anything likable about Mallory Wells or Luke. They both seemed very self centered and very naive.
2. Her dad was dying and this was really sad and yet Mallory seemed more interested in getting annoyed with and then drooling all over Luke than caring for her dad.
3. I didn't understand how she could see her dad while at Uni and not notice that he was slowly going down hill. No matter how oblivious you are that he is ill you would still notice a change in them especially if you are as close to them as you say you are.
Basically I expected a book that was more about her and her dad and how she looked after him before he passed away with perhaps a side romance slowly being rekindled. What I received was a story about how she still fancied the pants of this guy she used to date and this gave her the opportunity to drool over him again.
I don't know how I finished. Mallory was a ridiculous, self-centered brat who's come home to care for her dying father for the summer, only she's whining after two weeks that it's taken so long.
Not sure why Luke was ever with her in high school, and certainly not now.
The characters were two-dimensional, wish washy, and immature. Certainly not going to waste another couple hours on a sequel.
Most interesting was this was prefaced with a statement this was reedited. I cared so little when the errors started popping up that I didn't even comment past the first couple. 😜
3.5 / 5 This book was am interesting read. It is a story about Mallory who returns home after finding out her father is dying of cancer. It is such a sad topic in generally, because unfortunately we all see this all too often.
This book was a compelling read. I read it in less then a day. It was a good story with a lot of promise. I liked all 7 of the main characters that are involved with the storyline. I thought they was very individual and easy to like.
I relate to our main character, Mallory. I am from a small town and know what it's like to want to get out to something bigger and better. I understand her need to attend college in Boston. I went straight to an university to escape. I also relate to the return of coming home. "Big City life" is too much for most of us "small town folk." I liked Mallory for the most part. I did feel like she was a little shallow for my taste. I felt like she was more concern over herself then devoted to being with her father and her father, himself in his last moments. Besides that she was not a bad main character.
My favorite character by far is Luke. He is just an all-around-good guy. He is very likeable, and a guy that us girls fall for every time. He is a very loyal character , and devoted to Mallory's father though they have not been together for years. To me, he felt like a real, genuine person.
All in all, this was a good light read. There are just a few things that made me give it a 3.5/5. I felt like we weren't always given the details we needed to give the story the depth that I would have liked it to have. Also, it ends very quickly, and I am left wondering how it worked out. I understand this is going to be a trilogy, but I still wanted more for the closing of Mallory and Luke's story.
I would reccomend this for a light summer read. It's not bad, I just wanted more depth to it's entirety.
Reading the book description I had great expectations about it. Some were satisfied, others not so much.
The story itself is intriguing. Mallory escapes from the small town in Maine were she were born to attend college in Boston. After three years she returns home to take care of her dad, the only parent she has, who is dying from cancer. But this imminent tragedy isn't the only thing that it's going to upset her life. She has to face her ex boyfriend Luke, her first love, who was devastated when Mallory left town.
First thing I liked about the book was the location. I'n glad the author choose a small town, probably because I can understand Mallory's choice to escape to find "something more" but, at the same time, this persistent attachment with your home. Except from this, I quite didn't like Mallory. She was too much concerned over herself, when the only thing she had to do was be with her father. Sometimes I found it difficult to follow her, since she often changed her mind.
Luke is the perfect boy-next-door. He loved Mallory since they were kids and, despite of her behavior, he decided to spend time with her father whilst she was gone - a good father this time, after all the dysfuctional family I went throght in this particular book genre. He's the one who made the first step and had the courage to give up everyting for the girl he loves.
What I didn't like so much was the constant resentment that grew in the book. At the beginning Luke and Mallory try to avoid each other, which is understandable, but I think it's like the book misses a central part where the two of them find a way to be togethet again. It was too fast how they came close after years of separation.
This is a simple and enjoyable reading, and it's a good job, being the first book in a series. Like always, I'd expect more in the next. If you like New Adult books, you should read this.
I have higher expectations from the second book, Broken Dreams, with Rainey and Baker - characters that I find more interesting. I can't wait to find out Rainey's secret!
Broken Promises is an emotional roller coaster of a story about sacrifices and heartbreak. Mallory grew up in a small town in Maine where everybody knows everybody and news travels quickly through the grapevine. After spending the last four years of high school consistently with the love of her life, she is forced to break things off so she can pursue her dreams. She's sick of small town life and can't wait to escape to the big city; Boston. She expected her high school sweetheart, Luke, to drop everything and follow her to Boston. However, he chose to stay behind in Maine. He was angry at her for leaving the life she always knew, especially her father, her only family.
3 years later, she gets a call about her father and returns to Casper, Maine for the first time since she left it all behind. Her father's health is quickly declining due to a cancer that hasn't been responding to treatment.
This was a quick read, for me anyways considering I'm addicted to my kindle ;). I found myself growing attached to the characters, mostly Mallory's father and Luke. Mallory annoyed me because she was so stubbornly selfish and only thought of herself. But that didn't sway my thoughts about the story as a whole. You can't always love the heroine and I appreciate the fact that Dawn Pendleton chose to veer from the norm when she developed Mallory's character.
This book captivated many emotions from me! I was truly a mess while reading!
Dawn takes us into the lives of Mallory and Luke and takes us down an amazing emotional ride!
Mallory is living and going to school in Boston. She finds out that her dad is sick and comes home-- here to find out some troubling news and to find the ex/love of her life Luke working on her and her father's home....
Luke wonderful guy enjoys living in Casper and misses Mallory. He is surprised to see her back in Casper and judges her before even knowing some truths.
Despite it all, the attraction and love is still there despite the 3 year separation!
These two were wonderful characters as well as her father! He was a wonderful man to both kids and I enjoyed reading about him and even cried too!
I enjoyed this book and the emotions it captured from me... and I am looking forward to book 2 to see what happens with Mallory, Luke and all their friends!
So, if you like books about young love, forgiveness, life changing events to make your realize what is in front of your face and more.. this book is for you! :)
**I recieved a copy of this book in exchange of a honest review by the New Adult Book Club**
Awww!!! I thought this book was so cute. Mallory and Luke were perfect for each other. I finished this book within a few hours, and it was a great read. The reason why this book got four stars and not five was because, Mallory and Luke were confused, and I don't like confused characters that much. Other then that, the book was really good. The author has done a really good job in writing this book, and now I want more! I love romance books, and this one did not disapoint me. The characters were well thought out and amazing. At first, I thought Mallory was a really weak female who left her fauther to die on his own, but as the book went along, I relized she is not weak. Mallory is one of those characters who actually grew up some in the book. I recommend this book to all romance lovers out there, it will keep you on the edge of your seat!
It was barely okay for a free download - I'd have been ticked off to have paid money for it. It started out pretty good - I liked the premise. The character of Mallory was my biggest gripe. She was totally annoying. She sees her dad over her college years and never notices he's sick. She must have been blind in addition to self-absorbed. She comes back to Maine from Boston and the relationship with Luke just takes up right where they left off despite the broken hearts on both sides. Then she decides she'll stay in Casper because she loves the small town and her friends - then for reasons never explained, she does a total 180 and decides no she's going back to Boston. Her selfishness and head-whipping moodiness are beyond belief - not even menopause causes this kind of psychotic changes. Luke needed to drop her like a hot potato. Liked Luke and his friends, liked Mallory's friends - could not stand Mallory.
Mallory moved to Boston for college after she left her small town of Maine behind. Mallory was called home when she received news her father who was both parents was sick. Mallory dropped everything to be by his side though she hasn't been home in three years. Mallory left Luke her high school boyfriend because he refused to follow her to Boston.
Luke was trying to move on with his life but filling the void of Mallory wasn't an easy task. Luke dated other women but none compared to the girl he fell in love with in high school.
Luke and Mallory gone through so much but in the end they knew that they met their soul mate in high school.
It was a cute story! Quick read!

This book was addicting! Swallowed up in all the small town gossip which I miss dearly! Ms. Dawn tells us about the heart breaking story of death and love that last even when you're apart for three years! Luke is the ex boyfriend of the girl that broke his heart when Mallory left for Boston/college 3 years ago. Mallory comes back into town when she finds out her dad is dying from cancer and the small town sucks her back into her old life with friends plus Luke. I loved this book and characters! Looking forward to the next book and learning Rainy's secret along seeing how her life changes as she moves back to Casper!
I’m giving this book 3 stars, not because I didn’t like it, I did like the story. What I couldn’t stand was Mallory, she was annoying, I didn’t like the way she treated Luke and then made herself a victim when she was the one who always left. She was selfish, mean and a spoiled brat who didn’t know what she wanted. But I guess not all heroines have to be perfect, right? I still feel like she should have been more thoughtful, kind and grateful, especially towards Luke, but she always treated him poorly. But that is just my opinion.
I did like the rest of the elements in the book. Rainey and Gabby were great, and I really liked Baker and loved Luke :)
I would actually give this book 3 1/2 stars. I really enjoyed the characters and the story line ! I actually wish the book would have been longer and had more in depth details ! I wasn't finished reading about them when the book ended ! I wanted more !! I would recommend this book to friends :)
I found Broken Promises alright. I could not stand Mallory she is selfish, immature and whiny. Luke is okay he's a nice guy but a little whiny. I'm not sure why Luke wants to be with Mallory. I understood why Mallory left but she never grew up. I found Mallory wanted things her way or not at all. She wanted everybody to sacrifice for her without her sacrificing anything. I would not recommend. I read in Broken Series (Broken, #1-3.5).
Mallory has lived in Boston ever since she graduated h.s. not thinking twice she left the only man she ever loved and her dad behind. 3 yrs later she gets a call telling her her dad is dying. And when she gets back she has to face the past and come to terms with reality.
