My raid of the free Smashword kids' vault continues with Melissa L. Webb's Blinky. The more of these books I read, the more I wish I were an artist because some of these books could be really excellent with artwork attached. Blinky The Great Halloween Fish is one of those.

The basic story framework is a bit like Nemo's time in the aquarium in Finding Nemo. Blinky joins the aquarium and has a hard time fitting in. Pretty straightforward stuff, and I was starting to wonder why Webb bothered.

Then comes twist number one, and it was only half what I thought it was going to be. The extra half was a surprise, and I wasn't wondering why Webb bothered anymore. She made me smile, and I knew I was going to read this a second time, next time to my Scoutie.

Then comes twist number two, and even though it was pretty stupid, its bold theft of a Christmas icons powers, with a goldfishy twist, made me smile a real smile.

And then came my wish for artwork. Beautiful pastels drawings, maybe some watercolor paintings, even some sort of collage work, would have pushed this story from a simple "like" to a "really like" to an "it was amazing."

Find an artist to collaborate with, Ms. Webb. If you do, you'll have a serious chance of selling your books rather than giving them away. Thanks for the freebie, though, I appreciate it.
