There is a tiny little sentence on the front cover of this paperback. It says 'A Signet novel of the occult'. I suppose that is accurate because this story concerns Pamela Gabrielle, who is, according to the back cover,
"The newborn who transformed her calm delivery-room nurse into an amoral alcoholic.
The five-year-old who was expelled from first grade for behavior unbecoming a toddler.
The pink-and-white preschooler who piloted a stolen Volkswagen in a cops-and-robbers chase.
Is she possessed. . . or merely precocious? Whose mind peers from behind those big blue eyes?"

Yep, I would say that could count as an occult book. but it is not the gruesome type of story that I stay away from. This one is off the wall and at times disturbing for the innuendo involved. But it is also clever, and has a great surprise ending which I had completely forgotten about since the last time I read it. (Considering that was at least 15 years ago, i'm not surprised!)

The unusual title, which really tells you nothing about the book at all, comes from a story the father's babysitter had told him when he was little and that he remembered as his daughter displayed her odd personality. The story was that a woman in The Old Country had had a sickly
baby and decided it was a changeling. So she decided to give it a special dinner, and when the child saw what was on the plate, it said "My, in all my 500 years I have never had eggshells to eat!" And then the changeling became a normal, healthy child because whatever it was inhabiting its body left. After eating, presumably.

So is that what happens here? Does Pamela Gabrielle eat eggshells? Or does something else happen to make her 'normal'? Or does she stay the disturbing little girl the reader comes to know and care about?
