This is a very helpful book, particularly as it relates to the intersection of networking in real life and social networking. For those of us less skilled in the latter, this book will be an on-going reference, to be picked up again and again when trying to remember what Dave Delaney said about...
One of the areas I struggle with is networking with others. I realize that this is holding back my business. Once I make a connection, I tend to do quite well; however, it is the initial contact that I struggle with. Any advice I can get on the subject, I try to devour. I was, therefore, glad to come upon this book by Dave Delaney called New Business Networking: How to Effectively Grow Your Business Network Using Online and Offline Methods. In this book, he shared countless ideas and strategies for business networking. If this is an area that also challenges you, I would definitely recommend this book. Read more
This book is one of the best. Whether you are going to expand your network in the city you have lived and worked for years or you are "the new kid in town" trying to build your network, as I was, this book is what you need. I've been reading various books about the subject but almost all of them gave me kind of feeling that the writers are more concerned with showing themselves off than to improving the readers' knowledge. New Business Networking but was completely different from all other books. It contains everything you need from how to meet a senior person in the company you wish to work in with a cup of coffee to just ask about their company to how to improve your network by blogging and making professional presence in social media. The writer stays with you until the end of the book like a teacher. In the last chapters you get the feeling of being only a few days away from graduation and a teacher who successfully covers everything: "you need a business card","but", "nobody likes the obnoxious guy at the networking event handing out business cards as quickly as a Las Vegas dealer", "we live and die by our database".
Dave Delaney is one of those guys you just want to keep connecting with, and his book demonstrates why -- its central tenet is that effective networking is about much more than whipping out your business card at conference happy hours. Dave shares myriad ways, both in person and using online technologies, to truly connect with and make an impression on others, and how to build a COMMUNITY rather than just a stack of business cards.
Tons of practical details and how-to's, lots of resources listed and an easy, enjoyable read. Highly recommended.
