An easy-to-understand guide for those who want to help others in a paraprofessional counseling ministry. This book covers a variety of issues related to such caregiving. A little dated (particularly the chapter on helping by phone), but the vast majority of the information is as applicable today as it was 30 years ago!

Overall a good book chock full of helpful information for the lay "helper" (Collins intentionally avoids the term "counselor," leaving that title to refer to trained professionals). While the information is all useful, the book's format of an embellished outline gets formulaic and tiresome to read. Each chapter is a logical outline of ideas, and each idea has its sub-points, and most sub-points have bullet item lists to support them, whether they're symptoms, listening tips, communication tips, etc. It makes it easy to read and a good resource to refer back to quickly, but the pattern becomes distracting because it never seems to vary. Still, I would (and do) recommend this book.

Very practical book and one that pastors and counselors should read and re-read occasionally.

A very pleasant and informative look at how we can become more loving and caring as Christians and individuals. Written is the classic Gary Collins style; it is a pleasure to read and digest.
