Building Quantities Explained

Rate this book
This popular and well-established book has been rewritten to conform to the seventh edition of the Standard Method of Measurement of Building Works (SMM7) The author explains in detail the practical measurement of building works, using some twenty-five worked examples covering all the main building components, supplemented by extensive explanatory notes that clarify the basic principles and show how they are best interpreted and applied. As in previous editions, a chief aim has been to emphasise the usefulness of the book as a practical student guide to the measurement of relatively simple building work.

I like that each chapter provides examples of what bill of quantities would look like based on the item of construction. So, the author took me through the main items of construction. From setting foundation to implementing fixtures and fittings. So, each chapter provided interesting details of what a quantity surveyor will consider under the major items of construction.

I was fascinated by some of the drawings, especially one with an old toilet. That illustration of the toilet reminded me of an old building that I used to live in.

Overall, it's a good read and it delivers enough information to understanding the work put in by a quantity surveyor.
