In "Mr. Tompkins in Wonderland" his protagonist is a bank clerk who strays into a physics lecture. Of course, Mr. Tompkins does not understand much of what the professor is saying - his skills in mathematics are limited to addition, subtraction, multiplication and division, "of which he uses the first two in his profession". But he picks up enough interesting impressions to have a vivid dream related to the lecture. He likes his dream and comes back to enjoy additional lectures which in turn inspire new dreams.

George Gamow (Russian pronunciation: [ˈɡaməf:]; March 4 [O.S. February 20:] 1904 – August 19, 1968), born Georgiy Antonovich Gamov (Георгий Антонович Гамов), was a theoretical physicist and cosmologist born in the Russian Empire. He discovered alpha decay via quantum tunneling and worked on radioactive decay of the atomic nucleus, star formation, stellar nucleosynthesis, big bang nucleosynthesis, cosmic microwave background, nucleocosmogenesis and genetics.

It is a wonderful and fascinating insight into the theory of relativity. In this story, the old professor said first series of the Special Theory of Relativity with its basic postulates - the relativity principle and the maximum speed of interaction - and then on the General Theory of Relativity with its principle of equivalence of mass

This book is not as interesting as it looks. The dreams are relatively engaging, but they're interspersed with long, tedious and dry physics lectures. Don't bother.

مساء السعادة

بالأمس قابلت هذه الرواية بالمكتبة التراثية في مدينة الرياض، غلافها الورقي محاط بغلاف تاني بيتفكك عنه ومش مكتوب عليه إنها رواية للناشئة، لكني اكتشفت إنها للناشئة لما نزعت الغلاف الاضافي ولقيت مكتوب ع الأساسي إنها للناشئة🙈 ويمكن لو كنت عرفت إنها للناشئة مكنتش اقتنيتها لأنه عمري ٣٧ عام وعايشة بقلب هذه المعمعة الزمنية، ولأنه عمري ٣٧ كان لازم أتخلص من عقدتي مع الفيزياء وأتصالح معها ولو بآخر عمري وأكون جربت لذة ومتعة اكتشاف كل الجوانب الخفية للعلوم، ولذلك أخدتها معايا لمكتبتي، واليوم من ساعة واحدة بدأت فيها ، بقرأ في مقدمة المترجم لقيته بيحكي إنه مؤلف هذه الرواية مهتم بتبسيط العلوم، وإنه المترجم قرأله كتاب وهو صغير اسمه " قصة الفيزياء"

اسم الكتاب مألوف عندي لدرجة كبيرة، كأني ليا ذاكرة معاه، رحت لمكتبتي العزيزة اللي فيها عشرات الكتب الغير مقروءة وطلعت منها كتاب قصة الفيزياء لنفس مؤلف روايتي الحالية واحتفيت بكونه عندي وإني داخلة على مرحلة هتعلم فيها فيزياء الناشئة وأرجع بنت صغيرة من خلالهم، وخليت الكتاب بحضني مع الرواية وتمددت على أريكتي وبدأت أقراها..

كيف ممكن أوصف جمال اللغة؟ صعب أوصف شيء جميل أثر فيا بعمق وأثار اعجابي، الوصف الذكي والجمالي والبليغ بيشعرني ببلوغ الجنة، المؤلف عنده روح ساخرة قاتلة ومدمرة لكل عصب حي في أعصابي، وطريقة شرحه لهذه الرحلة مناسبة لعقليتي المنتكصة تماما عن ال٣٧ سنة ، الحقيقة الزمن بيغش في عمري غش شديد، ومش بيوفي بمكيال حقيقتي وطبيعتي بزمن مناسب ليهم.. لذلك أنا صغيرة جدا جدا في بحر هذا العلم العجيب وقادرة أندهش وأتعجب وأحبه بعقليات كل الصغار على هذا الكوكب البائس
ورغم إني لسه مش خلصت الرواية بس رغبتي بالتعبير هتدمرني لو مش كتبت عنها خاصة إنه هذا المكان الوحيد اللي بتواصل من خلاله مع العالم الافتراضي.

وإذا خطرلي شيء جديد بعد وصولي للنهاية هضيفه 🙈

Espectacular. Nunca había leído una novela estrictamente sobre física.

En El país de las Maravillas, acompañamos al Sr. Tompkins, un empleado bancario frustrado tras concurrir a una conferencia sobre relatividad, a través de sus sueños.

Pero sus desvaríos no son para nada alocados. El Sr. Tompkins sueña sobre un Universo con mayor constante gravitatoria, mayor constante cuántica, velocidad de la luz menor, etc; mostrándonos como sería el mundo si pudiéramos observar los fenómenos que sólo las partículas muy pequeñas experimentan.

Demasiado interesante y divertido como para no leerlo.

No es el tipo de lectura que suele estar en mi lista de pendientes, pero luego de leer la opinión de un amigo, sentí el deseo de acercarme a este libro, lo he hecho con mucha cautela y atención. 

George Gamow es un hombre brillante, que ha realizado un gran aporte a la Física en diversos campos. Con una capacidad tremenda para escribir en términos sencillos sobre un tema tan complejo como la teoría de la relatividad, la teoría de la gravitación y la teoría cuántica, nos sumerge en un mundo fascinante sin darnos cuenta para explicar a simples mortales, de a pie como yo, que no tenemos una formación científica estas teorías que a diario vemos sobre nuestra nariz y aun así no nos damos por enterados. 

Con gran ingenio crea un personaje llamado Sr. Tompkins, un banquero, interesado en la física moderna, asiste a una conferencia sobre el tema, no logra hilar todas las ideas que expone el conferencista, pero su mente inquieta aún tiene el deseo de desenredar ese bulto de anzuelos que va y viene en sus pensamientos tratando de darle sentido a todo lo que ha escuchado; imagino que agotado cae en los brazos de morfeo, tiene varios sueños con el profesor que dio la conferencia y las muchas posibilidades de cómo podemos percibir el mundo a través de fenómenos de los que no somos conscientes y que cuando escuchamos hablar de ellos, quedamos chinos. Pues, este no es el caso. No voy a entrar en detalles para que usted lo descubra, tenga su propia experiencia con el tema y el autor

A short and intriguing book written by George Gamow, an astrophysicist of the 20th century who conceived of the Big Bang. He wanted to enable the general public to understand topics like relativity, quantum physics and the like. To do so, he lectured, was heard on radio, was seen on early TV and wrote a series of articles that were later complied into books. This is the first of the books. Gamow puts his Mr. Tompkins into worlds that are similar to ours but different enough so that the effects of the new physics (at least new in the mid-twentieth century) could be seen. One such place had the speed of light capped at 10 miles per hour. Seems to me that the general public must have been pretty smart back then because this book takes some thinking. The book reminds me of Alan Lightman’s Einstein’s Dreams.

Our protagonist Mr. Tompkins dreams about different universes where different physics effects are noticeable in daily life. For example, in a universe where the speed of light is a mere 10 mph, he notices relativistic length contraction and time dilation from merely riding a bicycle. If this sounds interesting, I recommend these fun books - they take care to explain the physics involved, so you don't need any background to enjoy them.

ينطلق فيه السيد تومبكينز في رحلة خيالية لاستكشاف عالم المادة و الفيزياء الا وهي الذرة
و في رحلته يقابل و يستكشف تطور العلم و ابرز علمائه

Mr.Gamow is the great expository of science and able to explain quite difficult and complex physics subject to a layman. This is a jewel in popular science novel i think, and you should read it if you want to understand many physical phenomena through exciting adventure story of Mr.Tompkins. Here you will find a somewhat weird alternate version of world because many physical contants such as planck constant (h), gravity constant (G) or speed of light constant (c) considerably changed. To my surprise, i was able to grasp a litte of the essence of physical law that governs the entire universe. This book is worth reading !

I think anyone who tries to understand the nature of our reality feels like Mr Tompkins sometimes. It is quite difficult to change our understanding of something which we have a hard time of grasping though our visual perception. "Mr Tompkins in Wonderland" helped me see or imagine the world and universe more clearly through a "relativistic" lens. Funny, smart and brilliant. Will recommend. :)

A great little book that uses a man's dreams to explain scientific topics such as the speed of light and basic quantum physics. Even though the book is over 50 years old, it still is relevant. Fun, short read!

This is the older one with the Charcoal style illustrations.
It's been revised and updated a few times, but I still fondly remember the original.

The story intends to illustrate the laws of physics through adventure, but I didn't find it especially entertaining or informative.
