How do you keep a crowd of energetic young penguins entertained? Put on a play, perhaps? But will they pay attention through an entire performance? If Tacky's center stage, they might. Even in his flowing blond wig and little red "skipping shoes," everyone's favorite misfit penguin imbues the character of Goldilocks with his own indomitable personality and style. So what if the set is in shambles? This is one performance Mrs. Beakly's students won't soon forget.

This book is about a group of penguins who put on a play about Goldilocks and the Three Bears. Each penguin draws a part out of a bowl and beings practicing for the play. Tacky gets to play the part of Goldilocks. On the day of the play, the penguins get everything set up, but things do not go the way Tacky had planned. The other penguins get really upset that Tacky is ruining all of their hardwork. By the end, the audience of little penguins loved the play, even though it had not gone according to plan.
I enjoyed this book a lot. It was a great spin off of Goldilocks and the Three Bears, and was a great idea to keep the old story alive in younger generations.
This would be a great book to teach children that just because something doesn't go your way, or just because someone is different, that doesn't mean it's wrong.
This book talks about Tacky, the very unique and fun penguin, in another light from the 1st book. The other penguins used to leave Tacky out of things because he's weird, but in this book, they actually were grateful for him. The penguins had to perform a play for kid penguins and the only reason the kids enjoyed the play was because of Tacky's behavior and antics. Genre: fantasy, picture book, series. It's a great read for preschool-1st grade I believe. It's a fun story and super cute.
This is a cute little story, well-illustrated, that made me chuckle as penguin Tacky takes on the role of Goldilocks in a school play. Tacky doesn't exactly play the role as in the original children's tale, with hilarious results.
I hope as I pass this book along to my grandchildren that they will be read the original Goldilocks first. Knowing the original is what makes this little children's book so adorable.
I enjoyed it more than Miss 3. Helps if you're aware that it's riffing on formal vs pantomime theatre.
Miss 3 and I like to explore different books and authors at the library, sometimes around particular topics or themes. We try to get different ones out every week or so; it's fun for both of us to have the variety and to look at a mix of new & favourite authors.
Tackylocks was an odd bird, but a nice bird to have around. Tacky and his companions put on a play, for a Mrs. Beakly's class. Will the play keep the attention of this group of energetic penguins? Leave it up to Tacky to fracture this fairy tale, and make it the best play ever.
READ THIS BOOK! I laughed out loud and thoroughly enjoyed this fun penguin-twist on the story of Goldilocks and the Three Bears. The penguins' personalities are delightfully portrayed through puns and exclamations, and the reader is fully drawn in and engaged with the unique story line and funny characters.

All the perfect penguins study their part for the upcoming play. Only Tacky doesn't really get what is going on. However, when it comes down to it he performs nearly perfectly- saving the play with his silliness and his not understanding.
This is a funny recreation of the classic Goldilocks story. I think kids would love this book! It could be an example of rewriting a piece of literature already created.

A goofy, fun story with some distinctive and expressive characters. I enjoyed reading it, but I'm not sure the kids did (but to be fair I think it was slightly above their grade level). 3/5 stars.
This book is very adorable. Tackylocks and the three bears is about four penguins who want to do a play for the young penguins. However, things don't end up going the way that they hoped. This book is full of funny scenarios, entertaining characters, and teaches kids that things don't have to go perfect to have a great time.
This is a really cute book. I enjoyed the dialogue throughout the book. I thought this book was good, but there are some books with a better storyline.
There are an abundance of "Goldilocks" retellings. We still have snow on the ground so I pulled this one to share today. The endpapers are purple--a favorite color for many children--so be sure to begin drawing the pre-school crowd in by asking the color (purple!) and who likes this colore(I do, I do!). On the story's first page is pictured a tiny ice flow upon which are standing five penguins looking at what appears to be a newspaper and one penguin wearing a Hawaiian tourist shirt peeking from behind an outcropping of ice. The only text on the page is..."In a nice, icy land, something was happening."
The "misfit" penguin is Tacky and the others are appropriately named Goodly, Lovely, Angel, Neatly, and Perfect. Irresistable slapstick fun ensues.
This story works best with a K thru 2nd grade class, but a lively telling by a reader familiar with the script can pull it off with younger children.
We've read many of the books in the Tacky series by Helen Lester and Lynn Munsinger. We love Tacky's crazy clothes and antics and we can appreciate his uniqueness. The stories are humorous and fun to read aloud and the illustrations are hilarious. We thought this story, with its unusual version of Goldilocks And The Three Bears, was silly and we enjoyed reading it together.
