This is a comprehensive A-Z sourcebook of everything you ever wanted to know about the Man of Steel, including entries on Lex Luthor, Lois Lane, Lana Lang, Supergirl, and Doomsday. Plus, complete details of Superman's origins, and biographies of every character in his universe. It is illustrated with hundreds of black and white comic book images throughout, and two 16-page colour inserts.
Ever find yourself saying "Dang, what was that planet Hyperman fought crime on?" or "Did I just imagine Superman fought someone named the Purple Piledriver?" This is your book! Modeled on Michael Fleisher's classic Superman Encyclopedia from the 1970s, this takes on the challenge of covering roughly three decades more stories which includes a boatload of retcons, reboots and continuity changes (the authors can count themselves lucky this came out before the Flashpoint reboot). A really impressive job, and if you actually want to know stuff like this (I certainly do), it's fantastic.
Great book to skim and randomly read bits; it can be overwhelming to try and absorb all the changes and strangeness of a 72-year-old character/intellectual property, but it's fascinating at the same time.
Kudos to Greenberger for an exemplary resource on Superman and all those within his orbit. The only reason it's 4 instead of 5 stars is because I wanted it to be bigger with even more details! :)
If you are a true fan of Superman, you must have this encyclopedia! Specially if you already bought (as me) the other Essential books of the set of Batman and Wonder Woman.
