Have you struggled for just the right phrase when grappling with a class assignment? Crafting an office memo, do you want greater clarity and concision? Pounding away at a last-minute blog entry, haven't you ever thought, There has to be a better word for this? Now there is.Under the time-tested and respected banner of Roget's Thesaurus, here is an array of words and their definitions organized by meaning. With this volume at your side, you need never be stalled or stymied for an appropriate expression, whether speaking of the higher reaches of philosophy or holding forth on art, music, or poetry--or other highbrow pastimes. The more you expand your vocabulary, the richer and clearer your writing and conversation will become. And the better you'll be able to say exactly what you mean, joining intellectual discussions with confidence that you've found just the right words.
this is a great resource but is somewhat overwhelming: the sheer VOLUME can alone crush a man's spirit if you're not careful; i am not careful. it's overwhelming because i am not careful. because, technically this is meant for finding the "RIGHT" word (or the closest thing to that). but what if i don't know the right MESSAGE? what if i'm trying to find as many interesting words as possible, to conjure imagery, or possible themes to play with? what if i write to figure out what i want to say?
i got this book to find stronger words than i have in my mental arsenal, each one a writing prompt to figure out what i want to say. this can be tricky: again, the sheer volume is overwhelming. were this a shorter resource book, i could list all the words in one document without breaking it, creating a sentence from each one. eventually i will have a scene, or multiple scenes that create an arc that i never would've come up with had i not had this book. but to do that here would be to spend DAYS breaking multiple documents on something that may not prove fruitful in the end.
...or maybe i just lack the imagination, or the confidence in myself. or the desire to do what is essentially copying the dictionary, for the sake of making it work.
and i want to make it work.
this is probably a 'me' thing, because, given the 5-stars i am rating it, i certainly don't fault the people at Roget's for giving me a creativity headache. especially since i bought it.
i might be using this wrong, but since i already have it, i might as well keep at it.
