Without a doubt, one of the most important evaluations of a leader’s ministry is whether or not he or she attracts and develops leaders. Dan Reiland concurs, “I’ve found that the long-term potential of a church or ministry largely depends on a minister’s ability to develop new and competent leaders.” But how do you attract and develop leaders? In Amplified Leadership, Dan Reiland proposes that there are five crucial skills for attracting, developing, and deploying leaders in your ministry.

The book is broken into five parts with two sections apiece that consider each of those skills. It is worthwhile to share those as Reiland’s thoughtful approach is part of what makes his book as impactful as it is:
1: Establish a Relationship
a. Connect at the heart
b. Appreciate people for who they are
2: Engage a Follower
a. Encourage people to build them up
b. Inspire people to follow the vision
3: Embrace a Team Member
a. Invite individuals into meaningful ministry
b. Equip your team for ministry success
4: Coach an Apprentice
a. Select the best potential leaders
b. Include emerging leaders
5: Mentor a New Leader
a. Develop new leaders
b. Empower effective leaders to realize their potential

If you’re like me, you might look at some of the chapters and reflect that you might have a natural ability in that area, or you might have worked hard to develop skills in that area. My hunch, though, is that most of all also look at that list and realize that we have weaknesses on that list as well. What I appreciate Reiland’s method is that it is sequential and methodical. Each skill builds on the last step with every skill needed to be a true amplifying leader. I know I’m far from there myself, but I’m really grateful to Reiland for this roadmap.

I encourage you to pick up Reiland’s Amplified Leadership. I was challenged and encouraged by it and I think you will be as well.

The quotes below will give you some more flavor of the book:
• Integrity always prevails over personality. A person may have amazing charisma, but in the end character will determine his or her success as a leader.
• Leaders with character do not set themselves above the people. They roll up their sleeves, get involved, and show the way.
• Although each of us has been given gifts and talents, without the power of God we can do little that lasts. Only the power of God enables us to keep our character intact. We must lean into God’s grace, love, and power.
• If we can’t make and keep meaningful relationships, our effectiveness as leaders will be in jeopardy.
• But people don’t exist to help us accomplish the mission; they are the mission.
• People’s confidence in you springs from two things. The first is the trustworthiness of your character. The second is how responsible you are. The friends who trust you do so because they can count on you.
• As a leader, I want to find a person’s heart as quickly as I can.
• This all begins with personal authenticity, and the greatest blockage to this kind of transparency is self-protection.
• Authenticity requires you to be yourself.
• A leader is not called to make people happy but to make people better.
• Authenticity requires that you trust God.
• When it comes to trust, leaders must go first. Trust sets the stage for meaningful relationship by opening the doors
• Showing warmth and concern means paying attention to relational details.
• To appreciate a person (meaning you recognize his quality, significance, or magnitude, or admire him greatly), you must make an intentional effort to see the very best in that individual.
• You must be self-aware but not self-absorbed.
• The fact that people follow you doesn’t mean you are a good leader; it simply means you can lead.
• Good leaders must be good followers.
• It is impossible to overestimate the powerful example you will set by submitting to authority.
• Followers want significance even more than they want success.
• Followers want to know you have their best interest at heart.
• As a leader, I want the investment I make in people’s lives to be worthy of the price they pay to follow me.
• It may be hard to believe, but charismatic people with big personalities make up only a small percentage of leaders.
• Truly inspirational leaders don’t need magnanimous personalities to motivate people.
• Relational leaders are great shepherds, and their congregations know it. In fact, they feel it.
• Establish the need for change. The people need to know why the change is being made.
• Discipline is rarely listed among the attributes that make a leader inspiring. The truth is, however, a leader who lacks discipline is wholly and completely uninspiring.
• Commit to the vision yourself. As the leader, no one cares more about fulfilling the vision than you do. No one carries a greater burden or lies awake at night thinking and praying more than you do. Your passion and commitment for the vision must be profound.
• Capture the hearts of the people. You do this by first giving the people your heart. Your honesty, authenticity, and vulnerability help people connect with you and feel the message you want them to respond to.
• So if you’re serious about building a great ministry team, you’ll need to deal with your own stuff first.

I don’t remember this book being 5 stars, but in paging back through it, it’s a practical, instrumental read. Perfect for someone who is early in ministry and wanting to learn what leadership/discipleship can look like within the church. Reiland’s not flashy, but his material is solid. What a great refresher and resource for helping build teams within the church.

Read for a seminary class. Reliand was a little patronizing at times and seemed to juxtapose characteristics that didn’t seem like opposites. Also he talked so much about his own church it was kind of annoying. Good ideas, poor execution in this book.

I cannot begin to express how important it was for me to read this book. I'm grateful to Dan for sharing his years of wisdom working in the realm of people development. I was deeply challenged by the content... and found myself lacking in a few key areas. I'll be going back through this book again a few times, I'm sure.

Easy read with practical steps for identifying and raising up leaders. I especially liked his continued references to the partnership we have with the Holy Spirit in this process. I would recommend to anyone looking to improve their coaching skills and those engaged in disciplining upcoming leaders.

I like the process that Dan lays out to influence and build into people as a leader. He explains and shows a systematic process in the book. The author's style is straight to the point, without fluff, and it is a leadership book worth reading.

As a recovering perfectionist I thoroughly enjoyed Dan's practical insight to strive for progress in lieu of perfection. Applying the 5 practices to my life helped me to grow in ministry and professional leadership. It is a must read for anyone seeking to grow in leadership.
