California is a land divided by an 800 mile long rupture known as the San Andreas Fault.
The state's heart, the Central Valley, hasn't experienced the fault's full fury, at least not in modern times.
Until now.

A standalone disaster thriller from international bestselling author, Bobby Akart, one of America's favorite storytellers, who delivers up-all-night thrillers to readers in 245 countries and territories worldwide.

"Akart is one of those very rare authors who makes things so visceral, so real, that you experience what he writes."

Several years ago, an ARkStorm, a once-in-a-thousand-years flood event caused by a series of intense atmospheric rivers, flooded the Central Valley of California from Sacramento to what was once Los Angeles. It created a lake three hundred miles long, celebrated as the beauty which came from the ruin.

Bobby Akart is a genius at creating disaster scenarios."

ARkStorm, the Other Big One, was leading to another epic catastrophic event, one that would rip the state apart. The weight of the water was equivalent to the volume generated by the Mississippi River times twenty-two. It challenged an already fragile seismic system consisting of hundreds of active faults. What was once deemed a slow and silent rupture of California's sleeping giant, the San Andreas fault line, has changed dramatically since the ARkStorm.

It has awakened.

Mac Atwood warned that an earthquake along these stressed fault lines wouldn't just rattle buildings. It would rip the state apart, sucking the lake and the land around it into the earth.

You are there. Feeling what they feel. Anger, joy, love, mourning. You feel it all. Not everyone can write a book like this. It takes a special writer to make you feel a book."

If only they had only listened.

This modern-day, fact-based novel will have you whispering just one more chapter until the end.

A Fun Read! Scary and With a Few Laughs too

So I definitely enjoyed this second book in the series that started with Arkstorm. While reading this I had that feeling like I was waiting for the big event, the really BIG event. And while many things certainly happened in here (scary stuff too) I got the feeling that the main event is in the final book called "Mammoth". I had that idea even as I started this one, partly based on the two main characters and their jobs. They are Mac Atwood who has a unique sense about earthquakes (a sort of earthquake whisperer if you will) and Taylor Reed who is a volcanologist. Since we know the third book is about Long Valley Caldera its just common sense to realize that is the " main event ".

So what did I like about this? One is that the story moves so smoothly! You just start reading and you get very caught up in this world of earthquakes and other scary stuff that lurks under the ground like magma. And it certainly made me ask a few questions too. Like what happens if an earthquake occurs under a body of water? Under a big lake? Because now we have that huge Lake California.

These books are kind of addictive. And they are great to read if you have some stress. I think getting some little scares from the stuff in these books somehow helps you relax. I am unsure exactly how that works but it works well. The scary stuff in here scares you a bit (because this stuff is indeed scary) and then you can sigh and relax as its all fake. Its just a story. But it works very well. I suppose it may only work though if one is actually scared of this sort of thing?? But this stuff definitely scares me, especially volcanoes, so it works very well!

So Mac and Taylor definitely suffer many unique events in here. They are in life taking scenarios many times. Lake California threatens them as do earthquakes. Its all very thrilling. And poor Mac definitely is forced to do crazy dangerous stuff. He always puts his job at USGS first as well as trying to make sure that Taylor is safe. And with what is going to act up in the third book we definitely need Taylor!

I waa very surprised that a few things in here made me chuckle. Never expected that in this type of book! But a few scenes were kind of outrageous in a good way and so I laughed at it. How exciting.

And yes, there are a few small scenes in here already that give foreshadow to what is coming in the third book! Stuff that makes you go "uh oh...."

And I think the 3rd book should be very interesting as it seems to me that everyone talks about Yellowstone but almost no one ever talks about the Long Valley Caldera. Unsure why. I guess Yellowstone is more famous.

I sort of feel that this book and Mammoth should be one book. As it feels as I reached the end of this one that I am still waiting for the "big event". It feels like it ended in the middle of a book? I really don't mind too much as the 3rd book is available now and I can just go download it. But be aware it does give you that feeling.

Arkstorm had a much stronger disaster feel. It was more " in your face". But I suspect that Mammoth will outdo Arkstorm in sheer power.

Even so I still rate this a full 5 stars as I definitely had fun reading this and I was even googling a few areas of California mentioned in this book. This book does include two maps but the maps are on certain pages and so they are not always available when I get the urge to go look something up - plus I am not actually very familiar with California. But these stories help me relax and release stress so that deserves a 5. I slept great last night after reading about halfway through this exciting story.

No longer a fan

Anyone reading this book wants an action disaster thriller, not to be educated. The action is delayed until the second half of the book, and even then it is constantly interrupted by educational diatribes that are boring and end up being skipped over to get back to the action. The first half of the book is endless lectures about science. The 2 main characters are immature, arrogant, condescending, and generally unlikeable. Akart used to balance the action and science very well, but now it seems the story comes second to the science, and that makes for a boring and frustrating read. Every single thought process of the characters is examined in excruciating detail, once again dragging action sequences to a screening halt. My advice is to focus on the action, it's why people read the book. If you want to educate, write non-fiction. And for god's sake get yourself a competent editor.

Bobby Akart is the King of disaster books and this is no exception.

I loved Fractured it’s an absolutely fantastic read that is impossible to put down. I loved Mac and the wee bit of romance just put the icing on the top. This is a must read if you like disaster and I promise you won’t be disappointed. When I saw references to the books New Madrid Earthquake which I have read and then ARkStorm I decided to read the latter and although Fractured is not a follow on I’m still glad I did because they are mentioned back and forth throughout the book. I love disaster books and films but I prefer books so they always come first.

New Book

This was a very interesting and entertaining book. Super fast paced action packed and something very unusual from this author. Over the top and a tad unbelievable. I laughed throughout the story. Loved that Bobby Akart stepped out of the box and did a bit of humor all through a natural disaster. One good thing I like this author is his dedication to detail and his research on each disaster.

Fun read.

Fault lines declare war on romance

I usually like Akart. Not this time. I try not to be mean but the romance, that is unbelievable, ruins the book. Instead of characters we have caricatures the unmanageable genius, the smart giddy girl, long suffering boss of the genius, long suffering doctor forced to deal with genius. If you like Akart for his research, science, detailed insight - read it and just skip read the other points.

And The Beat Goes On

***Spoiler Alert***

Ever since I finished ARKstorm, I've been eagerly awaiting the publication of Fractured. And Bobby Akart never disappoints me. His special genius is the ability to put you physically, emotionally and mentally right into the chaotic storm of the book.

After the flooding of California by the ARKstorm of a thousand storms, a new lake had formed, stretching from Northern California where Sacramento used to be, all the way down to Bakersfield and Kern County. Cities are wiped out and the government is using eminent domain to confiscate the best of the lakefront property.

Mac Atwood from the USGS, happens to have had a cabin above where Vacaville stood. He is able to negotiate a way to stay by "stabilizing" the ground and living on a floating houseboat. Mac is still highly sought after as a seismology expert, he is known as the earthquake sniffer.

Because the new Lake California contains enough water to fill two entire Mississippi rivers, Mac and the folks at the USGS are concerned about the weight of all of that liquid on the notoriously unstable earthquake faults, including the bad boy himself, the San Andreas Fault.

When Mac is called in to investigate a deep, a gush of non saline water into the ocean, the action gets hot fast, in more ways than one. While heading out to the submersible, he runs in to Taylor Reed from the California Volcano Observatory (CVO), and is struck dumb by her presence. Just as they start discovering hot, chemical laden water coming from a conical seamount 200 meters high that didn't exist yesterday.

Fractured is a fabulous read for those who've always wondered what would happen if California finally got the "Big One". Every nail-biting detail is included, your worst nightmares are in front of you. How will you handle it when all of the faults are active at the same time? Shiver me timbers! You better read it to find out.

Hm. Were there parts that were very page-turning? Absolutely.

But there was entirely too much tech-speak - between government agency acronyms, earthquake specs, and geographical landmarks that mean nothing to non west coasters - and the main romance was just weird. And not romantic. I have never been weirded out by book characters saying "I love you" until now.

I get it. Every disaster thriller must have a trauma-bond romance. But this one was kind of ew.

And then suddenly, at the peak of the earthquake action, our mc, who had a dogged attachment to his work, dumped work entirely. And after spending so much time giving us the details of all the fault lines and their (real/fiction) stories and technical details of how they work... we just dropped the earthquake part of the story altogether. To focus on the weird "I want you to propose after we've only known each other for a couple days, but then I am going to refuse to answer and then I will say yes but then I will take it back" romance.

I am going to read another by this author to give a fair judgment, but I didn't find this to be at all impressive.

And the editing wasn't very good. Not the worst I have seen, but pretty bad for a book I paid money for.

This book did not seem to be part of a series but is the aftermath of another of Bobby Akart's novels about the ARKSTORM. The writing and editing were good and I always like the maps that are included. A lot of the information on geophysics I did find interesting, but comments on heavy handed government less so. I had two main issues here. One was the romance which proceeds very quickly, even amid the incredibly bad luck and incredible survival that this couple had. It was just a little too unbelievable for me. I had a very hard time understanding what happened to Mac and Taylor in the submersible. Surely the thing had safety harnesses, yet neither used them the first, second, third plus time they were thrown violently about. You can't manage this kind of submersible if you are knocked out, against the wall, badly damaged. Never let this guy near another submersible until he takes a proper safety course. That whole sequence rather spoiled the story for me.

My least favorite

I gave this book 3 stars because I know the author had to have gone to the extreme to get all the technical information in this story.
Having read all but a couple of Akart's books, this is my least favorite. The basis of the story is good but there are several things I personally don't like about this book. TOO much technical information...... Unless you're a scientist you probably won't understand a lot of it.
I realize it is fiction but both of the main characters appear to be superhuman.....much of their actions are just not realistic.
Finally, I was enjoying the book until about midway I guess Akart remembered that he had not used any profanity, he made up for it in the second half. Why do authors need to use all this profanity? It's especially disappointing to me that the women characters have dirtier mouths than the men. It just distracts from the story for me. I like Akarts stories a lot.....but there is no need for the profanity

The Fates aren't through with California!

After the ARkStorms deluged central California with enough rain to fill the Mississippi River from its headlands to the Gulf 22 times over, a huge body of water covered the dessert from Sacramento to Los Angeles. Lake California is huge! And the weight of all that water was placing tremendous strain on the many faults covering the western edge of the North American plate where it met the Pacific plate and they ground together. The San Andreas fault is just one of many fault lines fracturing the state. But they're all gonna see some action, and soon!

We have some old characters running the show, and some new characters to chew up and spit out! Some will live, some wear red shirts, but they're all important to the tale. And then there's Mother Nature determined to turn Arizona into oceanfront property! No spoilers, not even a hint, but this is another great read!

He's Done It Again

Bobby Akaart is THE Master of Disasters!!!

Fracture did not disappoint

From the characters to the Earth he has all his bases covered and winds a tale that keep the lights on late.

In these days of rampant climate change politicization...translated...earn a lot of people a lot of money...one thing is clear.

Mother Earth can pretty well take care of itself.

Wanna see REAL non fiction or government concocted climate change?

Google Tonga Undersea Volcano and it's after effects...which are happening right now and will be for the coming 5 to 10 years. Happened in January of 2022.

You have to dig for information, it's not on NASA and other government webs...it doesn't fit the narrative they want to foist on you.

As a matter of fact Mr. Akaart, here's a whole series of books for you.

An once in a thousand years flood caused by intense atmospheric rivers called an ARKStorm hit California years ago resulting in the deaths of hundreds of thousands and changed the landscape forever, could this cause a future disaster? The San Andreas fault line and many other fault lines have awakened. Mac Atwood, a geophysicist who works at USGS and Taylor Reed, a volcanologist who works at CalVO meet, hit off immediately and after a terrifying adventure try to tell their employers something drastic is happening along the fault lines. Can they get their attention while earthquakes are happening in numerous locations and will they be able to warn people in time?

Bobby Akart is my favorite disaster writer and this book is another example of his ability. New Madrid erupts resulting in bridges over the Mississippi river falling. References are made to what happened in the Arkstorm series and this has resulted in many of their quake monitors were destroyed.

Then there's problems with things happening in the ocean which make matters even worse. The lake itself holds major dangers and the earthquakes aren't over yet.

I really like his ability in writing about his characters and it seems to me that they almost always act in a very logical, intelligent manner. I really enjoy his books.

I am a huge fan of the author which is why I gave it a higher rating. Although I did find this book enjoyable, I struggled with it's believablity. One of the reasons I like his books is because I feel like it's a good mesh of fiction with some actual facts and believable scenarios, that at times seem far fetched but in all actuality could happen. I don't know if it's because I'm used to reading his series where he can draw the plot line out some, but it just seemed the action was happening almost too fast in this book. All in all, I loved the storyline and the characters. The narrator was superb as always. I will definitely read more from the author and would recommend this book to others.

Is this what the bear future holds?

I don't normally read these disaster type books but the preview caught my attention and the first few chapters kept it. If you are interested in disasters then defiantly read this book, and other books by Bobby Akart. Whether it will scare you or just make you concerned I'd according to.you. Personally it SCARED me. I've never had a desire to travel to California but even less now. And I have more fear for my two grandsons who are based at a Marine base there. I want them home!!

PERFECT READ !

Only Bobby Akart can put togethera thriller like no other and can capture the reader with his well thought out Senarios. Heart pounding, scary situations and helpless regrets, I loved reading this book. Life threatening, unexpected twists, full of peril, it engages the reader like no other author of thrillers. Mix in a bit of humor, fear and some long suffering and guarantee you will love this series as well as his others!

fractured

As usual, Bobby Akart has outdone himself! He is a master at creating disasters that hold the reader spell bound. Interspersing science fact with fiction creates a living breathing story that sucks you like the whirlpools in Fractured sucked in the submersible and floating house. Linking New Madrid, ARkstorm and Fractured together was absolutely genius. Thank you Bobby for another great read!!

Good plot and characters. Enough technical writing to make the story believable and understandable, but not too much so as to bury you in a textbook. The characters were real and believable. This book might be part of a series, but it is stand-alone. Any past references are explained enough that you are up-to-date always. This is highly recommended, as is the author. I was engaged so much that I read this book in just a couple of days!

Fractured

A fascinating, disturbing, complicated book. It took me quite a while to read this story. I had to keep reminding myself that it was just that: A story.
Bobby Akart has the ability and talent to draw me into the story. I can hear all the noises, smell all the smells. I get wrapped up in his books, forgetting that they are fiction. I got scared while reading this one!
All that being said, this is a book well worth reading.

California disaster thriller

The Arkstorm completely changed the landscape in northern California and the recovery efforts were so massive that the USGS had yet to replace their monitoring equipment, especially under the newly formed Lake California. Mac had his own theories about the numerous state fault lines. Those theories were about to be tested as a series of events start.

After reading the first book in the series, ArkStorm I wanted to see what happened next. I really enjoyed that book, a very realistic look at a disaster. This one was a bit of a let down for me. Far too much romance and not enough disaster. I would've like to have spent more time with the USGS instead of the budding romance, which took up way too much of the book. The narrator was so soft, I could barely hear his voice most of the time.

Chilling & exciting

This book grabbed me from the beginning, as an ex-Californian! I have been through countless earthquakes, but I could not put this book down! OMG! Mr. Akart has a way of drawing you in, you fall in love with the people (especially Mac, Sammy and everyone!), and pray that they will all survive. I even caught myself holding my breath and sometimes crying! If you like to read at all, you will love Bobby Akart's books!

Ok, I need sleep!

This is the second in the California series. They are related by the event of the ARkstorm, but the stories are standalone. I rarely say this, but in the case 2 books would have presented this story better. The characters were likeable and (sadly) predictable. I appreciate that these great books don’t include ridiculous sex and gratuitous violence. I love this series!

love the book. but scares the crap out of you

I live in California and have experienced several large earthquakes. The San Andres has us shaking regularly with small releases. But the fear of the big one is always there. I cheered for Mac and prayed for everyone. Love it. You will hold your breath.

Pretty Good Read

It’s a fun little story and moves along fairly quickly. Some good characters that develop nicely. I enjoyed reading it but honestly expected more. With earthquakes the size described, I think the story needed to expand beyond the confines of the two main characters. Look forward to seeing what happens in Mammoth next.

Poor California

Bobby Akart again crafted a novel that pulls you into the story and leaves you breathless. Fractured has the science embedded and weaved into the tale making it believable, heart pounding, and entertaining. Mr. Akart continues to end the world as we know it in an amazing variety of ways!

This is a good read.

His way of writing really flows. Since I grew up in Cali I researched the geological history of CA and found some really interesting facts about the existence of a state sized lake. Readers ought to do this too and then look at what’s going on with this “lake” now.

Awesome connecting novel!

I reread ARkStorm for the 2nd time to refresh my memory….
Then moved on to Fractured.
All so I could truly enjoy the next story, Mammoth.
Bobby Akart is a phenomenal researcher & storyteller. If you are a fan of ANY genre, you are doing yourself a huge disservice by not reading his work.
He’s a phenomenal writer!!

Much better!

I know you are a good writer by the number of books listed in your resume, but it seems this was way better than then the first of this series. Still some people doing crazy stuff, but almost believable. I think a map of the new lake and quake locations would have helped non Californian to see what was going on. Good book anyway.
