No one ever said Gayle Lindley's first job would be a killer.
Fresh out of college, Gayle's career path should follow the yellow brick road straight to the top. Thanks to a menial errand gone wrong, a wayward tongue, and a randy supervisor who won't take 'no' for an answer, Gayle's stuck in corporate hell.
Discovering a company secret only turns up the heat.
The one part of her life not going down in flames is her friendship with the gorgeous, but intensely private, Jon Cripps. Jon would make the perfect consolation prize for Gayle's pity party if dating a co-worker wasn't career suicide. Then again, with all Gayle has been through, maybe falling in love is the lucky break she needs.
Hitting the cool sheets with Jon soothes her mind and body, but it also enrages whoever's behind the smokescreen she's uncovered at work. Someone is willing to kill to protect their secrets, and Gayle and Jon are the targets.
With both her heart and livelihood at stake, Gayle's early career-limiting moves could turn into life-terminating ones.
I write smart, witty stories for smart, witty readers.
An Air Force Brat born to southern parents, I've lived all over the place but seem to have settled in the Pacific NW in the Portland OR area. I've been married to the same man for over 20 years and we have 2 teenaged sons.
Reading-wise, I love romance (all genres and heat levels), chick lit, mysteries, and YA (dystopian and contemporary mostly).
In general, I write and read but do NOT review. My top ten favorite books read each year I give 5 stars. If you're an author and I've read your book and you want my opinion, I'll give it to you privately upon request. I support writers in other ways as best I can however, and can be a pretty enthusiastic cheerleader.

Isn't it wonderful when you read outside of your usual genre(s), and stumble upon an unexpected gem of a book you'd have missed otherwise? Well, THE P.U.R.E. is one such gem.
I have to admit, I wasn't entirely blown away by the blurb. It sounded like some sort of white collar crime thriller with business jargon I'd never understand. Well, my first impressions were partly true: much of the details of the white collar crimes committed and the discovery of them remain somewhat murky to me, but it detracts little away from the pace and characters, and the overall WOW factor of the book.
Claire Gillian managed to make the rather dull (in my opinion--sorry!) world of accountancy and auditing into a suspenseful whirlwind of activities, ranging from murder and espionage, to love and romance. She grabbed my attention from the get-go as we join Gayle Lindley eavesdropping on her superiors. I absolutely adore Gayle's sassy voice throughout the story. That girl's one feisty, inquisitive, infectiously enthusiastic little pocket dynamite! Her nose for trouble invariably drags co-worker Jon Cripps into a whole web of deceit. But Jon--the handsome, smart, mysterious love interest with a wealth of hidden talents (both inside and outside the bedroom)--has some secrets of his own.
I don't normally read much romance (and this book is classed under "romantic suspense"), but the love scenes in THE P.U.R.E. were all so tastefully done, and maintained Gayle's voice so well, they blended seamlessly with the rest of the story, unlike the many gratuitious sex scenes found in other romance novels.
All in all, this book surprised me in more ways than one. It's the first romance novel I truly enjoyed, and it's the first novel on white collar crime I enjoyed. So what if I didn't understand the nitty-gritty about accounts and audits? It was still a thrilling story with great characters and an intriguing plot. I look forward to more from Ms. Gillian.
About two years ago, I approached an unpublished author I'd 'met' online through a writing site. We traded novels. Mine: Little White Lies — a work IN progress and her The P.U.R.E. — a work already done. I read The PURE in about 2 days, editing and trading ideas and giving feedback and ultimately being one of those early, early beta readers.
And then, tada! Here it is for me to read again. While the storyline was the same, the new and improved version (remember, I read it 2 years ago for the first time) is tightly written, fast paced and mysterious ... just like Gayle, the main character, likes it.
Gayle is one of those girls you either love or hate and those around her pretty much say/believe the same thing. She either grates on you or makes you want to stroke her hair and tell her to sit in a chair and stop worrying. But Gayle doesn't listen to anyone and just like a curious cat with nine lives, she uses her 1 life to undermine an entire fraud operation that's going on in the company she works for — her first job, her first company, her first ... everything.
Including Jon — boy wonder who is more than meets the eye. Jon is hot. Let me say, he is hot. He's got this quality about him. He's not an alpha male (which I love), but he can be when he needs to be. In fact, Jon leaves Gayle to do some of the 'dirty work' but not without his oversight.
As they move through the mystery of the problems at the office, the two of them also fall in love. Sure, that might be typical of two coworkers who work together for 12 hours a day, but in this case it really works!
Because this is contemporary romance, the story is like every day and the problems Gayle and Jon face are 'every day' problems (aside from the mystery of what's going on behind the scenes). Things like sexual harassment at work. Two-faced coworkers. Backstabbing coworkers. Fun intimate escapades that any one of us could try (if we were a little spontaneous and silly). That's the beauty of contemporary romance — it's 'real'.
Add in the suspense of the mystery and Claire takes us from 'hello' to 'I love you' with the idea there could be more in store for Gayle and Jon ... especially with her uncanny sleuthing ability and Jon's ... real job.
The ONLY reason this doesn't get the full 5 from me is because it's not my normal reading material. I'm a paranormal fan and have a hard time when I have to compare to all the paranormals that I love! LOL But that doesn't detract from the read. Not at all, especially for contemporary romance fans. Nope. You will love it.
It's a fun read, a quick read and if you work in Corporate America ... a must read.
*I received this book as an ARC for an honest review from the publisher*
This review wont be a long one because I loved this book! When I read the blurb I really didn't think I would like this book but I was very surprised at how fast I fell into this story.
When you read the first page you are immediately taken in by the main character "Gayle" ease dropping on her co-worker and hearing some scandalous information that could incriminate her bosses and leave her with no job. Even though Gayle is a new hire and is constantly getting harassed by her supervisor it doesn't stop her from getting to the bottom of whats going on with her firm behind closed doors. Even if the scandal might cost her her life and the people she cares for.
This was a complete and utter fun read! The story flowed very well and all the characters were fully developed to a "T"! I also liked how the plot and setting was based around the work place but the author doesn't overload the reader with all the logistics of the job. Kudos to the Claire Gillian for doing her homework on the in's and out's of the cooperate world and still keeping the read fun and understandable. The unwinding romance was the perfect touch in this story. I loved watching Gayle's and Jon's relationship evolve from friends to serious relationship throughout the read and I was rooting for them till the end! Over all I loved this book and I will be rushing to the shelves to buy a physical copy once it hits the store!
This book has laughs,mystery,sexy-ness,& OMG moments that will keep you guessing who did it through the entire read! I will definitely read more of Gillian's book to come
I recommend to: Everyone over the age of 16! This is a must read if you like romance, mystery, and scandal.
I've never been much of a fan of the contemporary romances or any type of Mystery/suspense, so I wasn't entirely sure how much I would enjoy this debut novel when I received the Advance Copy in my review email. As an avid reader of historicals and fantasy novels, I was curious to see if this one would really hold my interest in the same way as those types of stories generally do.
I was pleasantly surprised by The P.U.R.E. Not only did I enjoy the book alot more than I had expected, I actually finished the novel in a day. That is how good it was. I couldn't tell you the last time I have done that -- even with a fantasy novel.
Ms. Gillian does a stellar job of drawing the reader in from the first page and keeping them hooked throughout the story. The main character, Gayle Lindley is smart and sassy, definitely not a simpering sort by any stretch, and I just loved that about her. Her love interest in the novel, her co-worker, Jon Cripps is the perfect blend of mysterious and sexy.
The best thing about this novel for me, was the fact that the mystery was so well written. I didn't know who the bad guy reallyw as until the last chapter, despite "thinking" I knew far before that. Some great twists and turns in this one.
Even with all that suspense and mystery, Ms Gillian still finds the time to woo us with some steamy hot love scenes and fabulous descriptive writing.
A must read for anyone who enjoys suspense peppered with a hearty helping of romance.
I loved this book. The story is sexy, funny, and taught me never to be afraid to read outside my normal genre...
I was lucky enough to receive a pre arc of Ms. Gillian's book, The P.U.R.E a few weeks ago. I picked it up for the first time yesterday (yes, you read correctly) and read it in less than a day. I am an urban fantasy/paranormal romance girl at heart, so color me shocked when I found myself turning pages four hours later to see what happened next!
When new accounting hire Gayle Lindley, and her smokin' hot partner Jon Cripps, are wrongly accused of botching the numbers on their first audit, Gayle tries to ferret out the truth and stumbles on a dangerous conspiracy. She drags Jon along on her amateur sleuthing escapades putting both their lives and careers on the line. The chemistry between these two is undeniable, strike that, steamy, and the mystery kept me guessing right up to the very end.
If you thought a romantic suspense about a couple of CPA's in trouble might read a bit dull, think again. Ms. Gillian's wit is razor sharp. The pace flies like a bullet from a gun and hits the target with satisfying accuracy.
When I was offered a free advance copy of The P.U.R.E. from its publisher, I almost passed. I am not a mystery fan. I prefer something with lots of action and explosions. But I figured, what the heck, it’s free.
So, I sat down one day and began reading what I expected to be a dull, boring drama. Boy, was I in for a surprise.
Claire Gillian did an amazing job intertwining the overall mystery plot with the “Girl falling for the guy at the office” plot. Not being a mystery fan, I actually gravitated more toward the romance aspect initially, but Ms. Gillian quickly sucked me in to her overall world of corporate Hell.
The best part about this book is the really defined main characters. I totally believed them, and living in a cubicle myself for the last twenty years, I can totally relate to the inter-office politics.
The main character is a very much matured version of Nancy Drew. She’s a busy-body “can’t stand anyone having a secret” type. As annoying as that characteristic sounds, she is portrayed as strong, smart, and extremely real. She isn’t a tall lanky Barbie Doll. She is petite, and has a big rear end… again… “real”. I felt like I knew her, and none of her “sleuthing” seemed over the top.
As noted in the book description, there is a strong romantic element to this novel, and I have to give Ms. Gillian extra brownie points for making sure the characters always use condoms. Two characters even have a conversation about STDs and birth control. For myself, having lost a cousin to a sexually transmitted disease, I have to nod in appreciation to the author. This is the first time I have read anything that didn’t ignore that detail/concern like it didn’t exist.
Everything about this novel was believable and compelling, and I would not hesitate to recommend it to anyone.
Am I now a mystery fan? No, not at all.
Would I buy another Claire Gillian novel? Yes, absolutely. I wouldn’t hesitate for a single second.
This is Claire Gillian's first novel and it really was a fun mystery/romance to read. I found myself getting drawn not only into the mystery of the story but also into the sweet romance between Gayle and Jon.
They were both great characters in their own way and I am so glad that they told each other about their feelings for one another.
Gayle was such a fun character to read about. She was funny and smart and a little bit of a trouble maker. I think there were times when her curiosity got the better of her, but that made her character all the more real and loveable.
Jon was kind of a mysterious guy. There were times I thought that maybe he wasn't all that he appeared to be, that there was more to him than the reader was getting and seeing and there was.
This whole story was kind of like being on a roller coaster there were so many twists and turns and it was just a fun differnt read.
It has a little more sexual content than I was use to reading but nothing seemed forced or out of place with it. It just took on the natural flow of the story and the natural progression of the story.
I think anyone that really enjoys romance and mystery will really like this story. It has a little of everything for readers of those two genres.
I loved this book. It was a lot of fun right from the start. Told in first person by Gayle. She was can be very witty, very intelligent young woman and can get herself into some trouble from time to time, quite a bit really. Then you have swoon worthy Jon. He is smart, shy, handsome and has a few secrets your never sure what his story is. The story will grab you from the first page and keep you turning the pages wondering when the roller coaster ride will end. And it is a fun ride at that!! Dont pass up this up and I hope to read more on Gayle and Jon.
An awesome, engaging read. This was a great book. This book was the right mix of mystery, suspense and romance. I loved delving into the world of accounting through the eyes of Gayle. This isn't the type of book I would normally read but I'm so glad I did as I loved it. Gayle was such a character to adore. I loved her willingness to put herself out there, her fight to take on her harrasers, and her ability to do it all while falling in love with John. I loved that Gayle didn't let anyone talk down to her and she knew just how to work people and get things done. It was so cute to see such a fireball considering she was so little. This book was good as the author explained the accounting world in terms the average person would understand. It felt like since Gayle and John were leading the story it made more sense. Gayle and John's hijinks along the way as they try to solve the mystery were hilarous at some points. I found myself just laughing out loud at some of it. John was such a great match for Gayle. They complemented each other so well and played off of each other well. The chemistry between them was amazing too. You could just tell they would end up together and sizzle once they did. Overall this was a great read and I would highly recommend it to others.
4.5* from me for this one. That knock down of the half star rating is most possibly due to my own lacking. Because I struggled slightly with the opening of this one. Not with the writing--that's smooth and fluid. But with keeping track of the corporate hierarchy and the who's who. And (if I'm honest) I struggled to follow exactly what it was they were uncovering. I know this is everything to do with the fact I've never worked/had dealings with a corporate company and absolutely nothing to do with this story. Because aside from that little mission, I found this to be a truly enjoyable read. Gayle's just an adorable character. Her witty narration kept me entertained from the word go. And Jon? There's little else to say about him but: YUM! This tale certainly contains a bit of everything: suspense, mystery, THE HOT GUY (<Long story short: I had a lot of fun and certainly wouldn't mind seeing more from this duo in the future. I can just picture the 'Nancy Drew'ness of the storyline already. ;o)
I loved this story - both main characters appealed to me and I appreciated the build-up in their relationship. Gayle, with her petite blond Nancy Drew-ish snooping skills and Jon with his caveman, possessive, protective vibes were a great fit, both for each other and for the story they found themselves inside. I loved that they went from collegues to friends to lovers to partners in more than one way. I loved that Jon appreciated her brain and did not expect her to play dumb to make him feel better about himself. The story itself had great twists and turns that kept me guessing; even when I figured out some of the minor points before they were revealed. The main mystery kept me wondering until the end. This story was very well written and I loved a romance around a profession that most people think of as less than sexy, where both characters are very intelligent.
The P.U.R.E definitely a great story for anyone who enjoys romantic suspense with humorous moments.
I can’t remember the last time I finished a book. Shameful for a writer, I know, but it’s the sad truth. When the opportunity came along to read and review an advanced reader copy of Claire Gillian’s The P.U.R.E. I still took it, hopeful that I’d be able to make it all the way through but honestly prepared for it to gather dust so to speak on the hard drive of my laptop. I am pleased to report that not only did I finish it but that I enjoyed the journey.
The P.U.R.E. (Previously Undetected Recruiting Error) is Gayle, a young woman who has taken her first job in the accounting field. Instead of crunching numbers, she finds herself caught up in a world of cover ups, sexual harassment and mystery, not to mention falling in love.
Gayle’s voice was infectious as she led me through the otherwise mundane labyrinth of the business world. Her sense of adventure and her insatiable desire to uncover the truth would have been enough but what kept me clicking that arrow on my e-reader like a mad woman to get to the next page was her wit and sense of humor. Even during some of the more intense scenes, I found myself laughing out loud at the thoughts that ran through her head and the way she acted on those impulses most of us tend to ignore. I was disappointed when I reached the final page because that meant it was over and I had to tell her goodbye.
Thank you Claire Gillian for writing such a wonderful romantic suspense story. You make me want to be a better writer but most of all, you make me want to read. That’s a good thing. A very good thing.
I really enjoyed this book, I had been reading a lot of fantasy/paranormal so this was a nice change. It has mystery, suspense, danger and of course some romance! i actually couldn't bear to put this book down I started reading it around tea time and ended up taking my kindle up to bed and continued reading until I finished the book. Gayle's relationship with Jon at the beginning of the book is mere work colleagues, but it grows into a true friendship when Gayle is being harassed by her supervisor. Then eventually it turns to love.....but can Gayle truly trust Jon? Is he what he seems merely a very private quiet man or is Jon hiding a secret? Gayle has plenty of problems at work with the continuing and escalating sexual harassment, then she uncover a fraud at a company where she is auditing. the more she uncovers the more dangerous her life becomes. There's a murder, but even that doesn't even stop Gayle from digging further to find out who is responsible for the fraud. This book has you thinking and "playing detective" along with Gayle. It is so well written it has you guessing as to who the bad guys are right to the very ending of the book! I hope we get to read more escapades with Gayle and Jon. I also like the cover. The colours of the business attire, promote the seriousness of the book and the world that the characters work in. Did I enjoy the book? Yes Would I read more by Claire Gillian? Definitely would I recommend this book? I already have to my mum! *WARNING* this book does contain some sexual references, innuendo and scenes, so is aimed at adults.
I don't normally go for contemporary romance, but seeing as how Ms. Gillian is a fellow JTP author and a Scribo bud, I had to buy it.
Well. I was impressed. Mystery, part thriller, & romance was all wrapped up with a light-hearted bow. Yes, I said light-hearted. The MC, Gayle, is a riot. Even while eaves dropping (hiding beneath a conference table)she's amused and making the reader smirk. She jokes with herself while fleeing a gun-toting murderer intent upon blowing her brains out. Something like this you might think would feel contrived, but it didn't. It worked.
And Jon, her coworker? *fanning face* Um ... yum. Meticulous and private Jon Cripps - he has secrets. A suit and tie wearing bad@$$. He kicks butt and kicks Ms. Lindley's hormones into overdrive.
My only complaint - I wish I understood the accounting, number-crunching world a bit more. Some stuff was over my head, but it took nothing away from the story itself for me.
Do I recommend this book? Absolutely. Even if it's out of your normal genre-of-choice, pick this up. You'll be glad you did!
This is exactly the book I needed this week: fast, funny, and clever. And a delicious surprise: the love interests actually like each other as people from the get-go.
Oh, Claire... Hurry up and write another one. *Taps foot*
I don't know much about accounting and I don't much care, either. But I didn't read this book to learn about that, now did I? I know the author is a number cruncher and, like me, does her research.
I love the character of Gayle because she was spunky and apt to get herself knee-deep in trouble. She's like a nerdy number guru with a passion for mystery and intrigue. Claire Gillian spins the yarn quite well in this one and, honestly, I don't want to give too much away.
I found the unfolding at the end to be completely unexpected--a plus for me because I don't like figuring out the book halfway through. I will say that I did figure out Jon (not saying anymore) which left me bummed a bit.
The oo-la-la parts of this were handled with finesse. I loved the charm between Gayle and Jon, watching them fall in love though neither of them tried to. This book also tackles another thing women come across in the work place--sexual harassment. It hurt to see it happen and know, in the way it was handled at times, that it goes down like that.
As always, I'll buy your books. Even if it's about some shifting hippo longing to be an eggplant. Yeah, Claire, you're that good at weaving a tale!
This was a fun, fast-paced read from start to finish. Our heroine, Gayle, is a quirky and loveable character that reminded me a bit of Ally McBeal, but with more chutzpah. Jon was ... OK, let's be honest. He was sex on a stick. In a tie. (Think clean-shaven Joe Manganiello. RAWR.)
The two created a delightful team, chasing down bad guys, piecing together clues, then piecing together the nature of their evolving relationship. (Darwin would be proud.)
Gillian's knack for witty banter and humor is only rivaled by her obvious knowledge of corporate America. Hats off to her for a well-paced, smart and smokin' debut.
I've never been a big reader of romantic books but I might have to rethink that. This was a fun, fast moving, story. It has a little bit of romance nicely thrown into a LOT of suspense. The plot keeps you guessing the whole way.
For a new writer, this was very well done. I'll be on the lookout for anything by Claire Gillian in the future.

Review: I loved this book from start to finish. I did not want it to end. I would love to hear more about these characters in more books. Gayle is the kind of character that I love. She’s super strong, independent, smart and so witty that she has you laughing out loud so much. Jon is the perfect specimen of the perfect man: tall, dark, and smart. Gayle was open and talkative whereas Jon was more quiet and reserved. They were a perfect yin and yan that their characters worked so well together.
The book opens up to both characters getting in trouble for mistakes they made accounting in their first big job. They fast become friends. Gayle wants more of a relationship with Jon but knows it would be the end of her career. After their reprimand Gayle suspects that there is something fishy going on. She doesn’t know who is involved or what is involved but she wants to find out. While working at her job Gayle has become amateur sleuth trying to find all she can on the inconsistencies she is finding. Along the way she drags a reluctant Jon with her. They become closer and romance ensues.
I kept trying to guess who did what and what their motives were but I was never right. I was surprised how well the mystery was written with just enough suspense to keep you on your toes. Once you add in Gayle’s superb wit you have a great tale of mystery and intrigue. It was a story in an arena that is not often talked about. Corporate America tends to be stuffy and not the backdrop for a suspenseful romantic comedy. This is definitely an author to watch for; one that I have put on my must read author’s list.
The book has a wee bit of a Rom Com feel mixed with the romantic suspense. Fairly cute if not actually plausible. It tests your suspension of disbelief. It wasn't anything too huge but there were several things that you know while reading would never really happen None of that really bothered me though. I guess I don't read enough of this genre to know if this is the norm so I didn't go in with any expectations.
It's pretty different than what I've been reading lately so I enjoyed it. I liked the characters enough to read the follow-up novella about them. That one is not suspense at all but more a touch romantic comedy meets contemporary fiction.
I have to start off by saying that I don't normally read "romance" or "chick-lit" (for the record, I hate that label). I read this for the same reason I read other books I don't normally read, because I know the author.
With that out of the way, I have to say I was more than pleasantly surprised. Claire Gillian, for the most part, bucked the formula. Her characters were real and relatable. The story had good pace and it was clear she knew her stuff when it came to the internal workings of the business the characters worked in.
It read like a steamy, updated, Nancy Drew (which is fitting as that is what the main character is accused of being).
I'm not saying it was without its faults, but they were minor and didn't throw me out of the story.
I had two minor gripes. The characters spoke and carried themselves older than their 24 years, and I felt I needed to know the main baddy earlier. But neither of those things affected the flow of the story.
Would I read another Claire Gillian book based solely my impression of this one? A definite yes.
Fast paced and thrilling, this romantic suspense keeps you on the edge of your seat from start to finish. When Gayle and Jon discover a plot to frame them for a heinous crime, they set out to prevent the perpetrators from ever succeeding. They find themselves caught up in a whirlwind of events, ultimately leading them to the truth about the crime. Gayle and Jon also find themselves confronting one another and exploring the depth of their relationship, giving way to passion and desire. Written with witty humor, action and romance, The P.U.R.E. is a great, quick read that is guaranteed to take you on one heck of a ride.
I was provided a copy of the book by BTS eMag for purpose of honest review. I was not compensated for this review – all conclusions are my own responsibility.
What a joy to read. It's smart. It's sassy. It's fun. I totally fell for Gayle too. She'll make you giggle as she takes you on a ride. There's several mysteries to unravel before you get to the satisfying end. I'm definitely looking forward to reading Purely Relative.
This was fun and funny! The book had a few technical issues that annoyed me (like taking photos with the camera...come on, an FBI agent should know better lol) but they didn't ruin the overall feeling of the book. I really liked Gayle and Jon was a sweetheart.
2.5 stars, but I'm rounding down. The thing is, it takes a special author to write a compelling story about an accounting audit, and this one doesn't quite make it. The romance elements were good, and some of the sleuthing was fun, but parts dragged, the mystery wasn't very interesting, and the twist at the end was completely predictable and unnecessary-- seemingly thrown in for the sake of a twist, which, again, I predicted it from way early on in the book, so not so much of a twist after all.
I never could get fully engaged with the characters so that prevented me from really enjoying the story. I think romantic suspense isn't my thing, so that probably also hindered my enjoyment. Wanted to give it a shot since the suspense part of the story was centered around accounting fraud (and I'm an accountant), but the romantic relationship fell flat for me, and the bad guys weren't captivating enough either.
