A photographic document of Old East Lawrence, Douglas County, Kansas. This book captures the eye and interest of those who value the architectural heritage represented by these structures, before time and progress sweep them away. The city of Lawrence, Kansas, was founded by New England abolitionists in August of 1854. Winds of the coming national conflagration swirled around the new settlement, which had been thrown in the path of the westward expansion of slavery. It's east side was still the most densely settled and built-upon district, when confederate guerrillas leveled Lawrence in a dawn raid in August 1863 — at the loss of more than 150 lives. The neighborhood we see today is a survivor of the half-centre of residential, commercial and industrial development which followed the Civil War — and the rebuilding of Lawrence.
