Louise Hay was born to a poor mother who married Hay's violent stepfather. When she was about five, she was raped by a neighbor. At fifteen she dropped out of high school without a diploma, became pregnant, and on her sixteenth birthday gave up her newborn baby girl for adoption.
She moved to Chicago, where she worked in menial jobs, before moving in 1950 to New York. At this point she changed her name and began a career as a fashion model. She was successful at this, working for Bill Blass, Oleg Cassini, and Pauline Trigere.
In 1954, she married Andrew Hay, but after fourteen years of marriage Louise was devastated when Andrew left her for another woman.
Hay said that she found the First Church of Religious Science on 48th Street, which taught the transformative power of thought. Hay revealed that here she studied the metaphysical works of authors like Florence Scovel Shinn and the Religious Science founder Ernest Holmes.
In the early 1970's Hay became a Religious Science practitioner. In this role she led people in spoken affirmations meant to cure their illnesses. She also became popular as a workshop leader.
She studied transcendental meditation with the Maharishi Mahesh Yogi at his university in Fairfield, Iowa.
In 1977 or 1978 she found she had cervical cancer, and she concluded that its cause was her unwillingness to let go of resentment over her childhood abuse and rape. She refused medical treatment, and began a regimen of forgiveness, therapy, reflexology, nutrition, and occasional enemas, and claims she rid herself of the cancer. She declared that there is no doctor left who can confirm this story, but swore that it is true.
In 1976 Hay wrote a small pamphlet, which came to be called "Heal Your Body." This pamphlet was enlarged and extended into her book You Can Heal Your Life, which was published in 1984. As of February 2008, it is still on the New York Times best sellers list.
Around the same time she began leading support groups for people living with H.I.V. or AIDS that she called Hay Rides. These grew from a few people in her living room to hundreds in a large hall in West Hollywood. Her work with AIDS patients drew fame and she was invited to appear on "The Oprah Winfrey Show" and "Donahue" in the same week in March, 1988.
You Can Heal Your Life immediately landed on the New York Times Best Sellers List. More than 35 million copies are now in print around the world in more than 30 languages and has been made into a movie.
Louise Hay established Hay House Publishing. It is the primary publisher of books and audio books by Deepak Chopra and Doreen Virtue, as well as many books by Wayne Dyer.
In addition to running her publishing company, Hay runs a charitable organization called Hay Foundation that was established in 1985.
This is exactly what my heart needed. I've lost some joy, especially in the last few years, and I have gone from being a generally upbeat, fun, optimistic person to being guarded and somewhat bitter. It is clear that my negative, anxious, and critical voice started overpowering my positive, generous, loving one. This book has shown me a path to get back to me. There are hundreds of affirmations and exercises with clear instructions for almost any issue. I'm already feeling a difference in my mindset after a month's practice (while reading). I'm grateful this little book came my way.
I was kind of skeptical of the power of affirmations prior to reading this book. I'm still kind of skeptical after finishing the book. One of the most potent ways to use affirmations according to the author is to say them while looking at yourself in the mirror. What if someone walked in on you while you were doing this? They would really think you are disturbed.
That being said, there is a lot of undeniable wisdom in this book. This coming from a spiritual neophyte.
I always enjoyed listening to Louise each year at the summits. Now we get to listen to her everyday and here she takes us on a journey. 21 days will change your life as you work through everything in this book. Well, some of it may take longer than 21 days, but you’ll be on the right track. I enjoyed the affirmations and really worked with them as I passed a mirror. My kids laughed, but they will learn in time the power of affirmations in time.
Louise Hay's teachings are so simple, and yet so easy to overlook that when you suddenly "get it", they can really knock you for a loop. This is a great presentation of her empowering ideas. By making a step each day, for 3 weeks, you can really travel some distance and improve your life. Many people scoff at the idea of affirmations. However, most would admit to having a self-talk, or an internal dialog running in their heads that can turn painful and unproductive pretty easily. We can create powerful lives, when we step up and take control of, really, the only thing we ever can control, our own thoughts. I think Louise is one of the most important teachers we've ever had.
This was an excellent book! Very simple in it's content but powerful and really hit a lot of sensitive issues for me. I ended up writing down most of the affirmations and taping them next to my mirror so that I may use them often. A very powerful book and a must-read for anyone looking to improve their life and be happier with themselves and the world around them.
Practicing saying the affirmations out loud helped bring wonder and joy into our family home and helped everyone feel better. By the end of the day we were all using positive affirmations to help us overcome difficult emotions and produce the feelings and experienced we wanted.
A must read for anyone interested in transforming their life with positive affirmations.
Very good, but I expected it to be more in depth; it felt like reading "You Can Heal Your Life" (or like seeing the movie). I did like that emphasis on the use of affirmations.
Im usually not a believer of metaphysical ways of healing simply because I have not tried them...nor do I know anyone else that has tried them. However, I'm open minded enough to give everything a fair try before I write it off completely. Thats how I ended up picking up this book.
I am going through a tough phase in life at the moment and I do notice a pattern that Louise describes in the book...the more negative I am in a day or the more I complain amd whine....the worse that day gets. If I start cursing and getting annoyed at bad drivers at the beginning of my commute, the horrible experience continues for the rest of the commute (and even after that sometimes)
If negative thoughts can attract more negative experiences....its possible that positive thoughts/affirmations can attract more positive experiences. I love that she has sectioned off the affirmations...this way, I can only focus on the ones that apply to me in my current situation. Just reading the affirmatioms once as I read the book seemed to calm me. I will give this technique a try and update this review with a coclusion.
But as for now, I definitely recommend this as a quick read for anyone facing a difficult time.
Great book practical and will take you on a personal journey exploring aspects of your life and discovering limiting beliefs as well as being more conscious on the role of your mind, body and inner wisdom. I love the exercises and the day by day rhythm helps you focus on one thing at a time (and actually DOING! not just thinking). Totally recommended. I guess the big take away about affirmations is you're doing them anyways when you think (even if your rational mind can think its above this "hippie" new world stuff...) , so to be conscious of what you think (not judgemental, just aware) will have huge impact on using your mind for good instead of being used by your own mind. I love how it focuses on acceptance, as a way to set the ground for growth and helping you let go of negative patterns such as victimization, self sabotage and procrastination.
If you're a bit incredulous about this whole affirmation business, id strongly recommend you read more books on psychology, in order to understand the role (and mystery) of our subconscious, and how our deductive conscious mind has a big responsibility in giving our inductive subconscious the right kind of message and framework. that or just try it out and see for yourself by your own experience. Best of wishes to you!

When I started my journey of healing, I had read You can heal yourself by Louise Hay.
I have been re-engineering my thoughts with positive affirmations.
Affirmations are nothing but the thoughts you have over and over. Once you realise the power of your thoughts you need to redirect the energy to a better outcome. The change doesn't happen overnight. It takes time to get out of old habits. But it is always better late than never. Take the control of your life in your hands. Don't let the past experiences define who you are. It is time to form new, healthy habits.
I would recommend this book to whoever wants to know about the power of affirmations. It is a simple and concise book with practical exercises and daily affirmations for various parts of your life.
21 Days to Master Affirmations by Louise Hay is a practical guide to using affirmations for personal growth. The book is divided into 21 days, with each day featuring an affirmation and a helpful exercise. I love how it’s structured, with clear sections for affirmations and exercises, making it easy to follow and practice. This approach makes it simple to incorporate affirmations into daily life and improve different areas, from self-love to abundance. It’s a great tool for anyone looking to use affirmations for positive change.
So, this book is not you affirmed something for one day and get it the next day. You have to be consistent with the process and gradually you will see the difference. It is time taking procedure not a sure short way but it is sure way to get the result but you have to follow other methods also mentioned in this book to get the result of affirmations. Loved it but if elaborated the procedure to get the result will be more beneficial to those who doesn't understand the concept how mind do works.
So this book was recommended to me by my therapist and after 25 pages, there's no way I would ever finish this. Not to dunk on the idea of positive affirmations, I'm sure they're very helpful to people, but this book was written by someone who had no formal training in mental health and believed the power of positive thinking could cure diseases like cancer, so I'm done.
I like this book. It might not a book for someone that seeking for a clue of critical thinking, but it's good for someone that like to learn good positive words; it's a first step to be a positive thinker. After reading this i also get affirmation to use on my daily basic as well.
