Suzy Kline, nee Weaver, was an elementary school teacher for 25 years and most of her books are based on the experiences she had while teaching. Suzy and Rufus got married and had two daughters named Jennifer and Emily. Now, more than 24 years after writing her first book, Suzy has traveled all over the United States helping children learn how to enjoy reading and writing.
This is another interesting story in the Horrible Harry series by Suzy Kline and Frank Remkiewicz. We've read several of the books in this series and found them to be funny, short, and entertaining.
This story has a Valentine's Day theme and features Harry and his friends getting ready for a wedding ceremony. The story is short and entertaining and we really enjoyed reading it together. We will be sure to read more of the books in this series soon.
This month has been filled with weddings for me to attend. When I saw this title I just had to pick it up and wasn't disappointed. Suzy Kline spins a wedding tale from the perspective of a 2nd grader named Doug, and his friends.
Doug's friend Sidney has marriage and weddings on his mind because his mom is getting married and he doesn't want to be in it or give out the invitations, he has been carrying in his pocket for a few days, to his friends.
Harry decides to ask Song Lee to marry him on Valentines Day. Song Lees friends Mary and Ida plan the whole thing. Harry also loves to play pranks on his friends.
Can't tell you any more than that... spoilers you know. ;)
This book was about a boy who had to invite his friends to his moms wedding, but didn't really want to. The group of students then decided to have a wedding of their own. One of the students had never been to a wedding before so his best friend wanted to show him what it was all about. When it was time for the wedding everyone was ready and prepared. In the middle of the ceremony another student came up asking the groom if he wanted to play kickball. Of course the groom went and then followed the bride. The students were upset they missed the wedding so they boy finally handed out the invitations to his moms wedding. The students would actually see a wedding after all.
If you have read books from the series than you know its no secret that Harry likes Song Lee. Read about what Harry does that makes Sidney feel a little better about his mother's wedding.
Harry is a young boy who can be pretty mean sometimes. In this book in the series, he decided that he wants to have a wedding of his own and marry one of his classmates on Valentines Day. I like how the author portrays Harry as a friend first, but that he also possesses some bad qualities. This goes to show that not everyone is perfect, but we can all have some qualities that are liked. Again, I would recommend this book to second or third graders that are beginning to read chapter books. The vocabulary and content may be a little above a first grade level, but I would still say that it's doable at that age as well. I would give this book 3/5 stars. It's a good read for young children, but I don't agree with some of the depictions of Harry. He is supposed to be "Horrible Harry", but this may encourage bad behavior from some students.
Super cute installment of the Horrible Harry series, and in this one, Valentine's Day is right around the corner, and so Harry decides to ask his crush, Song Lee, to marry him. With a paper veil and plastic ring, they are all set to go through with it, when a kickball game gets in the way.
Funny, cute and a great beginning chapter book. I read it to my six year old and he LOVED it.
This book is great with a few twists. It's a great story to read with your child who"s just a beginner or a child that's great at reading on his/her own. It's a real story with humorous outtakes with the characters. A must read.
This transitional easy reader (a chapter book with very short chapters) is I think the 5th or 6th in the series of which I've read one other book (Horrible Harry in Room 2B). The books, narrated by Harry's friend Doug, are pretty entertaining, especially this one about Harry's 2nd grade marriage proposal to Song Lee, a classmate originally from Korea. Kickball forms the backdrop to the Valentine's Day wedding. I would recommend this to any early reader looking for a humorous, realistic fictional read.
Read before the professional development session on Literacy through the Arts began at Southwark Elementary School.
This series was one I was interested in as a student, and I still enjoy these books today. This one has a Valentine's Day theme thrown in with a little bit of kickball at recess, which I think allows boys and girls to enjoy this. As Doug's mother is getting married, he is shy at passing out the wedding invitations to his friends. As his group of friends find this out, they want to show Doug that it is okay. They decide to have a Kickball Wedding, including a maid of honor, a spider, and a small interruption by something else!
This is a sweet follow up book to Horrible Harry's Secret. This would be great to change children's feelings towards a wedding or marriage if the child is old enough to understand. The story goes that Sidney has marriage on the brain because his mother is getting married and he will be the ring bearer in the ceremony. Harry decides to marry Song Lee in a valentine's day wedding to help Sidney out.
