Compiled by two experienced librarians, Across Cultures introduces you to more than 400 recent fiction and nonfiction multicultural resources for preschool through grade 6 and encourages you to make literature about diversity an integral part of your program of instruction.
Arranged in thematic groupings (Identity and Self-Image, Family and Friends, Traditions, Exploring the Past in Diverse Communities, for example), this lively volume links diverse peoples, themes, and issues. It presents both annotations and practical advice on programming strategies. Connections are made to projects, graphic organizers, and activities.
While I appreciate guides like this, which collect books under specific themes (including Identity, Family, Neighborhoods, Traditions, Exploring the Past, and Knowing Today's World), they become outdated quickly, especially as this book was published prior to the founding of the #WeNeedDiverseBooks movement in 2014. The co-authors have public and school library experience, and their list of 465 titles (from - 2007) show awareness of their work with children, though they do not provide much critical content about the books they collect.

Across cultures: a guide to multicultural literature. Library Media Connection, 26(4) p92. Criteria: Content Scope More than 400 books, both fiction and non-fiction are annotated, indexed, and added to lists in various categories. It is appropriate for use by librarians looking to add quality titles to their collections, as well as classroom teachers and students. The literature circles and parent-child selections are particularly valuable, and set this title apart from others in the genre. Accuracy, Authority, and Bias The authors of the guide, Kathy East and Rebecca Thomas, are both experienced librarians whose specialty is children’s literature and multiculturalism. Arrangement and Presentation .Identity; Self-Image and Learning; Families, Friends and Neighborhoods; and Traditional Folktales are the major divisions of the guide, followed by chapters about literature circles and books appropriate for parent-child reading. Relation to Similar Works This book has parent-child reader group titles, which makes it stand out from other books in the genre. Timeliness and Permanence In the Boone County schools, there is a large population of diverse ethnicities and cultures. This population is spread throughout the school system, in every student body. Their numbers are increasing, and this guide would be helpful to the SLMS as well as the classroom teacher. Accessibility/Diversity Because the Boone County schools have so many ethnic and cultural groups registered in their public schools, this resource should be used with increasing frequency by librarians shopping for authoritative additions to their collections, and by teachers and students in selecting books to read for both pleasure and information as well as to recommend to students.
