I love this series. But why a novella? Perhaps the author did not want us to wait to read a full length novel in the series? I am not a big fan of novellas....But this was good none-the-less.

Although, I enjoyed this addition...What I missed was Butcher's usual formula of telling the main story and inter-weaving the secondary characters from both past and future stories throughout the novel.

Having said that, I did enjoy the relationship and connection between Liam and Dakota. I really felt very sympathetic towards both of them for different reasons. His inner thinking and feeling about getting Dakota to commit to him was the best I have read so far. And Dakota's feeling that she failed her brother and the guilt she felt which resulted in him being killed was palpable. She made a choice to leave him and save herself when she realized he was beyond hope must have been a crushing moment in her life that I would never be able to let go of. them.

After a vivid vision the luceria gave Liam and Dakota, they both had incite to what each had experienced and what they were capable of as a couple. Dakota has known a long time she was a "blooded person" and this vision really intrigued her. Finally, a way to have the power to fight the Synestryn. She saw what the other women could do when tied to Theronai. And Liam realized he had pressured her into a temporary bond out of his own selfishness and need without explaining anything. He saw her needs and life desires for the first time. And I think this helped them both to understand each other better.

A tender moment came Dakota woke to Liam kneeling beside her bed sleeping with his sword at his side....she reached out and touched his hair and chest and life mark. Inwardly, they both recognized and contemplated their desire for each other and that they both would like this to be a lasting bond.

After practicing their power together and seeing what they were capable of as a fighting team she suddenly looked over his shoulder and saw something (Part of Dakota's power is to can see trails where the Synestryn go): "The trail," she whispered. "I can see the end. I don't understand. The demon that killed my brother....It's here." Liam looked out and saw sickly green lights wink into existence, appearing amidst the line of trees across the cornfield....Glowing demon eyes. Lots of them. This is the spooky part right before the big battle in this novella....I could just hear the screeching "Friday the 13th" music playing as she says: "It's here."

Overall, this was a nice story, well written and wets my appetite for the main course, for the next full length novel in this series. This is one of the best series I have ever read and enjoy the details, sub plots and danger as well as the romance....in this case I only wished it had been a full length novel.

Dakota Kasey has been obsessed with tracking and killing Synestryn since they attacked her family and killed her brother several months ago. No matter how hard her cousin, Jake tries to get her to stop putting herself in danger, Dakota doesn't/won't/can't stop. Jake asks Liam Lamm to try to convey the seriousness of the situation to her and convince her to go live with the Theronai as a favor to him. When Liam goes to talk with Dakota, he finds Dakota is his mate. Jake & Dakota strike a bargain that can either save them both or get them both killed as the Synestryn arrive in force.

This fast moving short was just as exciting as it's longer cousins, the only things missing were visits from the other Theronai and length. Dakota and Liam had good chemistry though they each seemed a bit single-minded while working under constraints. Little progress was made in the overall arc but this side story puts another power couple in play for the ongoing war.

When Jake Morrow send Liam to protect his cousin Dakota in her search for the demon that killed her brother neither of them knew that she was Liam’s match. Even though she doesn’t understand what happening between, Dakota agrees to bond with Liam so she can use his power to kill the demon, but the agreement only stands if Liam can kill the demon within the two days of the current dark moon.

Great, exciting story though a bit cliché and I wanted more at the end.

Footnote: 1) They already have a Sapphire lady: Andra. What are they going to do with two of them?

Fave scenes: Dakota seeing Liam’s vision, Liam in meditation and Dakota’s first use of power

I had given up on this series but I thought I'd give this novella a try. I only finished this book because it was so short. Every book in this series is the same. The overall plot has potential but she spends too much time on the sex and very little telling the story. I'm done.

Historia corta. Los protagonistas son Liam y Dakota. Muy similar al resto de libros de la saga. Está fuera de la trama general de la saga, aunque tenga su lugar en ella.

This was not over long for a short story. Things moved quickly, but it felt paced well. I was able to put myself in the shoes of the female main and I understood her motivations. The male felt somewhat generic, but it really wasn't his story.

Bound by Vengeance is a novella by Shannon K. Butcher. This is part of her Sentinel Wars series, and it is right before her Dying Wish full novel due in March.

Bound by Vengeance is about Dakota Kacey, who knows all about the Theronai warriors, and the women they become bonded to save their lives. Dakota is one the Defenders, who help the Theronai’s against the evil Synestryns. Dakota blames herself for the death of her brother Daren, who was killed by the demons. She is determined to avenge her brothers’ death, and plans to go after the demon responsible.

Liam Lann is a Theronai warrior who is called in by Dakota’s cousin (one of the leaders of the Defenders) to help Dakota. Liam is near his end, having given up at any chance of finding the women who can save him. But when he comes close to Dakota, his luceria around his neck, starts turning colors. Liam is shocked and finds it impossible that maybe Dakota is the women to save him.

This is a short story, but it is an excellent story I could not put it down. The romance that develops between Dakota and Liam is great. Early on, Liam tries to convince Dakota to take his necklace (luceria), and she is drawn to the power she receives from it. It is this, and her determination to kill the demon that makes her work with Liam and train on how to use the powers that he is able to feed to her through the luceria.

Dakota fears to make a commitment that would bind her to Liam forever, but she is drawn to Liam sexually, something they both find difficult to ignore. They work together to find and kill the demon. But Dakota feels like a failure, as the demon was not killed by her. She wanted to redeem herself with her parents, whom she feels blames her for her brother’s death. Liam too has his own issues, as he feels Dakota does not want him, and he is willing to let her go, but to another Theronai warrior, whose she might save.

It was nice to see them finally realize they belong together, and they will become full partners in helping all the Theronai’s fight this war. This was such a pleasant read, exciting to the end in a short series. But it was so well done. I love this series, and love Shannon Butcher’s writing. Now on to Dying Wish.

In this short story we meet Defender Dakota and Sentinel Liam. This story pretty much had the same formula that Shannon K. Butcher has applied to all of the Sentinel books. Theronai warrior is dying and happens to stumble upon his Theronai savior disguised as some human woman that doesn't realize that she isn't human at all but a Theronai. Theronai warrior hooks up with said woman, convinces her to wear his Luceria necklace, they discover her special power, she's called something like Sapphire Lady or Jade Lady or White Lady (based on the color of her solidified Luceria), they fight some baddies, fall in love, and Theronai warrior is no longer dying...All in a few days time.

I'm not knocking it because it happens to be working for me. :-)

I think the only thing that is starting to nag me at this point is that all of the Theronai women being found are pretty messed up. Somewhere along the way they have had to endure abuse of some sort or they have had lives without their parents. Something has jacked them up. I'd like to see a strong jacked-free heroine in one of these books.

At any rate, I liked this story. It flowed nicely, the relationship developed in a way that their love in the end was believable and OMG! there was one INTENSE scene that was...INTENSE!

I can't wait to read the next installment in the Sentinel Wars which recently came out. I have to say that the author kind of got me thinking for a bit that Dakota was really human with traces of Theronai ancestry and could still save the warrior. It would have been nice if she could have found some way to work that angle. We'll see what the future holds.

Ok, I rate short stories a little differently than a full length novel because they are not full length and therefore don't have the same level of intensity or character developemnt, so they deserve to be considered differently than a novel.

That being said, this was a really well-done short story. I have to be a huge fan of the series so that helps, and because we have met Liam before we have some idea of who he is to start out. The story does a really good job of presenting both the hero and the heroine in terms that help to get familiar with them both quickly and without feeling overly rushed or shorted on the connection. This is often my problem with novellas/short stories when they involve a new character - you don't really get a chance to connect with the characters and feel invested or involved in the outcome of the story. Either that or you feel "jipped" because you didn't get enough of the story to feel satisfied if you happen to like the character from the series. In this case, you get enough of hte action, the love story and the characters themselves to feel like it was acomplete story. If you follow the series, there is not a lot of "data dumping" (one of the advantages of a short story) to overshadow the story so you can enjoy the story without feeling the need to skip several paragraphs here and there (as I am sure many of you do!). If you don't follow the sereis, there is just enough data to clue you in to the important points so you can follow along and enjoy the world at a fairly high level without feeling like you just aren't getting it or are missing key elements. It presents a pretty solid idea of how the author writes, what the storly line is, and how the characters are developed in the full length novels.

I recommend this book to both series followers and those new to the series. If you want an opportunity to check out the series before jumping in to see if it's your "thing" then this is a really good story to do that. For series followers, it's a nice little side story about one of the secondary characters that deserves an HEA of his own. A very well done novella (at 91 pages it's more novella than short story) and was well worth the read.

I love this series. This was a novella but Liam and Dakota's story didn't feel less developed than usual. They may have had one or two less hurdles, but the main thing that makes this a novella instead of the usual full-length in this series is that we didn't have all the secondary characters. This was a nice little teaser for Dying Wish that comes out next month.

I do have to say that I got a little annoyed with Dakota in the last few pages because she pulled that whole "How could he possibly love someone as worthless as me?!" crap, I just wanted to tell her to shut the hell up. But other than that... good stuff.

This was totally a throwaway story. Followed the formula of the rest of the series, and I felt no attachment to either character. I guess I'm glad that it was only a novella. The hero and heroine fell "in love" so fast, it was kind of ridiculous. I could buy "in lust" but the whole, "I'll love you forever even though we just met" is such a hard sell. I could buy that the heroine might tie herself to him out of gratitude and as they use their connection to open themselves up to each other, love builds... but it was just a novella.

I'm looking forward to Torr and Grace and the others in the next book.

With this being a short story we didn't have the long wait/fight for the couple together. Of course it helped that Dakota knew all about the hidden world, so meeting the warrior Liam wasn't a big shock for her.

I liked that Liam didn't bowl over Dakota with this larger than life personality of a warrior. He realized quickly just what Dakota was to him and he worked to slowly win her over by being very open with her and support her when she started to be all whoa is me, which happened a lot.

I hope that we see more of this couple in future books.

Excellent addition to the Sentinel Series.

Love Liam was so glad he got his forever. Liam is super considerate and extremely encouraging forcing Dakota to take a look at herself and be the woman she is destined to become. I loved Dakota so much pain yet her power and Liam make her grow and get through it all.

Although short this novella packs a punch.

Although it is better to read the the series as a whole this can be read as a standalone as there isnttoo much connection to the story as a whole

All up great installment cannot wait to continue on with the series.

About 3.5 stars. This was a nice novella length story. Dakota Kacey is wracked with guilt after her brother is killed by a demon attracted to her blood. On a quest for vengeance, she has no cares for her own safety. Sent by her cousin, Jake, the leader of the Defenders, Liam Lann decides that if he can't keep Dakota from going on this mission, he should do his best to try to keep her alive by going with her. This was an interesting story, and while the couple is not as engaging as some of the other MCs in the other books of this series, I still liked their story.

A quick story, pretty much a condensed version of the other pairings. Dakota is part of the Defenders who have only recently decided not to fight with the Theronai- yet despite the change being recent she has next to no mistrust of Liam. When Liam realizes that Dakota is actually a Theronai woman he is understandably excited and convinces her to take his luceria so that they can go after the demon that killed her human brother together. The plot is nothing new, but the story is sweet and a consistent continuation of the series.

Reread 2025. 2 ⭐️I’m not quite sure why I liked it so much the first time I read it.

Things I liked:
•Liam didn’t trick her into taking his luceria

Things I didn’t like:
•FMC Dakota can’t use reason
•Insta-love
•Also the author kept calling the creatures demons which she hasn’t done for the rest of the series.

Loved this Novella! I hope we get to see more of Dakota and Liam in the future.

Marked this one's release day on the calendar and bought it at breakfast, finished it before noon. Made Luke's dentist appt. so much more pleasant. I'm often disappointed in novellas (lack of development due to length), but this one hit the mark. A solid entry in the series, can't wait until the next one!

I'm not usually a fan of short stories, but I loved this one. The Sentinel Wars might be my favorite series. It really depends on the day you ask me. It's a toss up between Sentinel Wars and Black Dagger Brotherhood. Anyway, this wasn't nearly long enough but short stories never are. It still had all of the important parts, they were just shorter. It was perfect for our four hour drive today.

These short stories are a great taster, though I find they move so quickly, everything happens in 48hrs and I miss the depth of the character you get in a full novel and the side stories.

Must say though I loved reading the excerpt at the from Dying Wish and can't wait til nit comes out next month!

I really didn't like Dakota. Out of all the heroines in this series I know she bugged me the most. She was so wrapped up in her guilt and poor me-ing. One scene in particular bugged me, she left in the middle if a fight because something didn't go as planned. U wanted to shake her and tell her to get over herself.

Rating~ 3 stars to 3.5 stars.

This is a short novella about Liam and Dakota. It was a quick read and a good edition to the series thought it didn't really have anything to do with the overall arc of the series.
