Former combat medic Kory Wagner has been in four war zones, served three tours in Iraq, survived countless firefights, RPG’s, IED’s and even a helicopter crash. Now she’s home and out of the Army for good and someone is trying to kill her in her own backyard. Just as disturbing is the handsome sheriff who’s on the case.
Sheriff Sean Harding doesn’t quite know what to think of the decorated veteran that managed to outsmart an entire search party. What bothers him more is the body of a PI, whom she hired to find her sister's killer, was found dead in a building Kory owns. And Kory isn’t being very cooperative with helping him find the answers as to why someone would kill her sister and want her dead. Will he be able to keep her alive along enough to discover the truth?
Anne Patrick is the author of more than a dozen novels of Romance, Mayhem & Faith including the award-winning and best-selling Wounded Heroes Series, Fire and Ash and Out of the Darkness. When she isn't working on her next novel she enjoys spending time with family and friends. A former Oklahoma native, she now resides in Kansas. Look her up on social media. She loves to hear from her readers!
With four tours in the Middle East, a Bronze Star, and psychological scars, Kory Wagner leaves the danger of the army to begin a quieter life outside a war zone. Her reprieve from battle is short-lived when her sister is murdered under suspicious circumstances, and she must do her own research to find the answers she is looking for. When the private investigator Kory hires is killed, she must work together with the small town 's protective and handsome Sheriff Sean Harding to find the murderer who has turned his crosshairs on Kory. The duo works together through Kory’s PTSD, and Sean’s growing feelings for this decorated veteran urge him to find the culprit and bring her the freedom that comes with finding your own peace and faith.
Kill Shot brings the words of the Declaration of Independence to life as Kory searches and fights for her own “Life, Liberty, and pursuit of Happiness” finding it in the small coastal town of Baycrest, Maine. Regaining her own faith in God helps to comfort the suffering veteran as danger seems to come closer and closer to home.
Anne Patrick provides a different perspective to the troubles that are plaguing our troops returning home from the horrors that they experience overseas. The spellbinding content of Patrick’s work creates a page turning drama filled with adventure, romance, and faith.
I have a brother in law who is a vet, plus my dad, a vet if WWII. I always wondered how they felt? My brother I law as in Iraq right after the bombing of Baghdad. There are many more vets in my family-Korean War, Cold War, Desert Storm- many! I am proud of them and their service. This story reminded me.
Just when she thinks she can come home and try to acclimate to civilian life, Kory Wagner finds herself trying to find her sister's killer. She has been through it all, several tours in the Middle East with a nickname of Cat since she has 9 lives, this soldier should not have to be facing this tragedy. When she finds the private investigator she hires dead, things go from bad to worse. But Sheriff Seth Harding is here to help, and not only with the investigation! Kill Shot is suspenseful, full of twists and turns, and Anne Patrick weaves the perfect web, keeping us on the edge til the very end. Her stories are always amazing, and I love that we never know the answers, keeping us guessing. The characters in this story are extremely realistic. Patrick touches on some difficult topics like PTSD and survivor's guilt as she lets us in on pain and suffering a veteran may go through after coming home. We take so much for granted! Her basis of faith is always a calming sensation for me as I listen. This is another winner and I am glad to have had the chance to listen.
Leonor A Woodworth is always amazing, but I especially love her narrations of Anne Patrick's work. She has an expressive voice, and it lets all of the suspense and danger in. Her emotional pull is very real and keeps me invested in the characters and the outcome of the story. I loved it.
She's home now and should be safe...but is she...?
With everything going on in the world right now I've had more time on my hands so I've listened to more audiobooks and consequently have discovered several new authors. Anne Patrick is one of those new-to-me authors. I was intrigued by Kill Shot partly because of the series title, Wounded Heroes, and also because it features a female wounded warrior instead of the stereotypical alpha male in most romantic suspense novels.
A touch on the gritty side, but still well within the normal realm of Christian romantic suspense parameters, I found Kill Shot to be an enjoyable listen in audiobook format. While this is my first Anne Patrick book it won't be my last. I already have several more on my phone, including books 2 and 3 in the Wounded Heroes series, ready and waiting for me to listen.
If you are looking for a good romantic suspense in audio this might be a good choice. I didn't really catch any issues with the production or sound quality. The narrator is one of my favorites and was a nice match for the story. I hope she narrates the next books as well. All in all, not a bad way to spend a few hours keeping the mind busy when the hands are otherwise occupied.
(I received a copy of this book from the author/publisher. All opinions are entirely my own.)
This is an interesting novel dealing with Former combat medic Kory Wagner and the struggles she has returning to civilian life. She suffers from flashbacks and PTSD. When she returns to her grandfather's property, murder and suspense begin.
Sheriff Sean Harding tracks her down and they begin to get to know each other. They work together as well as independently to solve several crimes.
The Sheriff and others in the community try to help her restore her faith.
There is plenty of action, and a romance builds during the story.
I enjoyed this audiobook.
The narration was well done. The characters were well portrayed. Leonor A Woodworth gave an excellent performance.
I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.
Kill Shot by Anne Patrick is a clean and powerful listen that brought me new awareness of PTSD. I enjoyed this murder mystery in a christian format. I had never guessed the killer! Kudos to the author for not making the suspect obvious! I especially loved the pranks described in the book and found Kory to be a delightful character. The sense of community was well done in this book. Seth has a heart of gold, and his reaction to the bait was priceless. Leonor A. Woodworth was perfect bringing the characters to life. She added realistic emotions, and I could hear who was speaking. I really enjoyed this christian murder mystery and will definitely listen to more books by this author and narrator. I am looking forward to the next story in this series. I hope the deputy gets her story told.
Kory while in the military had seen it all, and survived. Her sister was murdered and she wanted answered. She hired a PI and also had a call that someone wanted to buy the warehouse. Both meeting were to be there , upon arriving she found her PI murdered, and someone wants her dead. She reported the murder to the police and then disappeared into the woods . The sheriff finally located where she was staying, intrigued by someone who could evade the search party. They work together and single to solve crimes. Strong believable characters, it also deals with the issues those Vets returning have to deal with. Excellent series.
This one was really a lot of fun to listen to. Kory is out of the military and struggling with her sister's murder and trying to investigate it, dealing with her own PTSD from her years of service in the Middle East, and now it looks like the murderer is after her. The town sheriff is both irritating and sweet but she's not sure she's up for romance on top of it all. It quite simply has it all murder, mystery, thriller, romance and a good clean Christian tone that ties it all together. The narrator was great and a real joy to listen to.

This is my first book by Anne Patrick and it was a good story. Very real in the flashbacks suffered by Kory, a medic in three tours of war-torn middle east countries. When Sheriff Sean Harding meets Kory it's all over for him. Kory, not so much. She has her life-after-service to figure out, as well as to find out who murdered her sister and why. I would have given the book 5 stars for the story, but there were many editing errors so it cost a star. I would still recommend the book, though.
Kory and Sean’s story will hook you on the first page. It has suspense, drama, romance, plus a military hero and a handsome sheriff! It will keep you turning the pages to see what happens next.
I received a complimentary copy of the audiobook; I was not required to write a favorable review. All opinions in this review are my own.
This is one of the most real books I've read! It addresses the issue of PTSD in veterans, it has an awesome story line with strong, believable characters. I didn't want the book to end.
Anne Patrick gave us an awesome glimpse of post traumatic stress. Her protagonist was inspiring as a military medic as she dealt with the ravages of war. I highly recommend this book.
Enjoyable Christian romantic suspense with emphasis on military veterans and PTSD. Although I sometimes found Kory a bit abrasive when paired with the ever-patient Sean, their romance resolved nicely.
This book was a good mixture of mystery, romance, and faith. The author balanced each element very well. Kory's story was very realistic and relatable. There are lots of good supporting characters and I can't wait to read the next book.
Great read. I had never heard of this author until I saw this free e-book, and I really enjoyed the book. A lot of suspense, great plot and characters. I definitely liked it enough to read the rest of the series
I have to say I might be a bit bias, but I have loved all of Anne's book that I have read so far. When Anne contacted me about her newest book of course I said yes as the blurb sounded interesting.
Kory Wagner has come home after retiring from the Army. After several years and 3 tours through Iraq she thought the time had come to get out. Kory has seen too much distraction and heartache. She was a combat medic and watch her members of her own platoon get killed. She also made some good friends with the other members she served with. Digger for one is her best friend who always had her back along with practical jokes from the others.
When he sister is killed by a hit and run driver Kory starts to investigate. She was a medic too long and knew the mark Callie had were not from a hit and run driver. She hires a PI that Digger knows and went to meet him at the warehouse her grandfather left her. She gets there too late as there is another person there who shot the PI and was now shooting at her. Kory gets away but not before she gets the key to a post office box the PI had.
Sheriff Sean harding is on the scene after a woman had called 911 about the shooting. He starts finding out more about the woman who called in. Kory now has him trying to keep her safe from the killer and help figure out what really happened to Callie.
As soon as I started reading the book I was sucked into Kory's life. She suffers from PTS (Post Traumatic Syndrome). Sean tries to help as much as he can as she opens up a little bit each time. I guessing who was after Kory up till the end when the person responsible for the death and trying to kill her is revealed. The characters are well written and work well together. Anne does a great job again of keeping us guessing. This is a must read it has romance and suspense.
There is a lot of potential in this story. There are just some things in the story that don't add up for me. Two examples, though there are more. First, the sheriff comes to the warehouse after Urlik is killed and decides by the end of that chapter that the blood trail belongs to Kory AND that someone is hunting HER and wants HER dead. Those are such leaps of logic. There is no way finding a scrapbook could have told him all that or looking around the crime scene could reveal the killer's objective or potential victim. In fact, it could have been anyone leaving that blood trail and who says that someone specifically wanted her dead other than just that instant when she was with Urlik? Second example, the sheriff could base his request for a warrant on the fact that Urlik gave the key to Kory on the PI's deathbed after muttering the words that Callie's death wasn't an accident. Instead, there is all this talk about waiting for the brother's permission or that Callie's death (which isn't in the sheriff's jurisdiction anyway) was listed as a hit and run.
There also seem to be an unreasonable amount of typos--grammatical (like they're, there, their), and punctuation (possessive apostrophe when none is needed or none when it is needed or no commas when they are needed, etc.). I have come to expect the occasional mistake in electronic books but this is beyond that.
I did not look to see whether this was privately published but that could explain all of the above.
There is nothing like a good mystery, and when you add a bit of romance and a Christian message, I don't think it gets much better! This book had me hooked from beginning to end, and just when you thought everything was fine, the action heated up right at the end.
I honestly cannot think of anything negative about this book. It is the first in the series, and this was the first book I had ever read by Anne Patrick. There is absolutely nothing objectionable--completely clean in every area. And the Christian theme shines through in a non-preachy sort of way. Korey and Sean are the perfect couple, and the story never lagged or slowed down.
I want to take a moment and thank the author for honoring the military in this book. There is a growing perception in this country that the military is not to be treated with respect, and one can often find this sentiment even within the Christian community. I am so glad that the author dedicates this book to our illustrious armed forces personnel. It makes no difference what you believe about the conflicts in which the U.S. is involved. Our military deserves respect and support no matter what.
This is a fast read that will appeal to a wide variety of readers, and I believe it is well worth the reader's time.
I was sent a copy of this book in exchange for my honest review. I was not financially compensated, and all opinions are 100 percent mine.
Kill Shot is the second book I've read by Anne Patrick (the first being Fire and Ash) and a good suspense read. I really liked how the book dealt with the military and war vets - their sacrifices and struggles with adjusting back to civilian life.
The characters were great. I loved how Sean and Kory acted towards one another and there were some very humorous scenes. =) I also really liked Digger and hope he is in future Wounded Heroes books. The mystery in Kill Shot was really good and I had no idea who the culprit was until he/she was revealed!
There were some errors/typos in Kill Shot and, while not a big deal, it did draw my attention away from the story a little.
Overall, a good read with some really suspenseful moments. I liked it and look forward to reading the next book in this series, Trespasses, as soon as I can. I recommend it if you enjoy suspense books with some romance.
*I received this book for free for my review. I was not required to give a positive review, only my honest opinion - which I've done. All thoughts and opinions expressed are my own.*
This was an interesting book with lots of character depth. Kory is a war vet, dealing with severe PTSD as well as the death of her sister and someone out to kill her. She doesn't seem phased as much by the things that have happened since she's been home, but the stress of her experiences in war haunt her. A reluctant damsel in distress, her independence shines through and almost pushes everyone away. Sean is a good man, though we don't see much of him except in how he is with Kory. They work well together though, despite the possible problems, and their romance is light and sweet. Many side characters fill in the story and the town, leaving what I assume to be open avenues for later books. The plot keeps a fairly good level of suspense and excitement, though it gets a little preachy for my tastes when it comes to the Christian slant. Overall a good book that will leave you guessing until the end.
