Very nicely produced book offering a menu of 50 great cycling climbs in Europe. The bulk of the climbs are located in the Alps and Pyrenees. There's a sprinkle of routes in the Vosges (Ballon d'Alsace), Appenines (Gran Sasso, Blockhaus) and in the southern Spanish sierras (Pico de Veleta, Calar Alto). And even four Belgian hills - De Muur, Koppenberg, Mur de Huy and La Redoute - that have garnered an outsized reputation in the spring classics. No climbs on British territory have been included.
Climbs are ranked according to the height of their finish line, from a modest 78m to well over 3.000m.
The photography is top notch and the accompanying texts, very well written, recount interesting bits of cycling lore. Each climb is accompanied by a fact box, including a locator map, an altitude profile and basic data such as altitude gain and average gradient. Worthwhile variations of climbs are covered as well.
All in all a must have for cycling enthusiasts, either as a coffee-table book or as a guide to start planning your own climbs. In addition to the hardback edition, Quercus has released a softcover and small-format ('saddlebag') edition which is easy to put into a suitcase.

Daniel Frieben kirjassa "Pyöräilyn klassikkonousut" (WSOY, 2013) esitellään viisikymmentä kuuluisaa keskieurooppalaista vuoristonousua, joista suurin osa on näytellyt jonkinmoista roolia maantiepyöräilyn historiassa. Frieben kertomien urheiluanekdoottien lisäksi tarjolla on tarinoita maantieteestä, historiasta ja luonnosta. Lukija voi tutustua myös kunkin nousun jyrkkyysprofiiliin ja saada vinkkejä mahdollisista virkistyspaikoista reitin varrelta. Valokuvat reittien varrelta ovat todella komeita ja saavat mielen halajamaan itsekin tien päälle. Se on sitten toinen juttu, mahtaisiko tuollaisen etapin polkaisu onnistua keski-ikäiseltä setämieheltä, mutta saahan sitä aina haaveilla!

Erinomaisen hyvä kirja, joka toimii matkailuoppaana, historiaoppaana sekä urheilutarinoiden kertojana. Suomennos on erittäin hyvä. Kirjassa käydään läpi Euroopan parhaat, näyttävimmät ja hurjimmat nousut vuorten rinteitä pitkin, ja suurin osa niistä on ollut isossa roolissa kolmessa maailman tärkeimmässä kilpapyöräilykisassa - Tour de Francessa, Giro d'Italiassa sekä Vuelta Españassa.
Alpit eivät ole koskaan niin paljoa kiinnostaneet matkakohteena, kuin muut paikat enkä ole koskaan kyseisiä vuoria elävänä nähnyt. Nyt kun tämän kirjan pikkuhiljaa luin loppuun, varsinkin loppua kohden alkoi innostus vuoristoa kohtaan nousta. Koronavirus tietysti vaikuttaa tulevaisuuden matkailuun vielä ainakin parin vuoden ajan (ennen uusia tulevia pandemioita), joten laskettelukeskusten viruslingot ovat toistaiseksi suljetut, mutta silti olisi vielä jossain vaiheessa mukava käydä vuoria katsomassa, ja mikä parasta, jos mahdollista, kokeilla näiden solateiden nousua polkupyörällä.

Polkupyöräilijöillä on fiksaationsa raskaisiin ylämäkiin. Erityisesti kunnon ylämäet tuntuvat kiinnostavan isojen pyöräilykilpailujen järjestäjiä, ja miksipä ei: raastava ylämäki on varmasti kiinnostavampaa katsottavaa kuin tasaisella tiellä ajaminen. Minä en niin tiedä – mieluummin olen itse ajamatta ylämäkiä, enkä kilpapyöräilyä seuraa.
Pyöräilyn klassikkonousut -kirja tarttui kuitenkin matkaan kirjastosta. Se esittelee Euroopan 50 legendaarisinta ylämäkeä, joista suurin osa on tuttuja Tour de Francelta, Giro d’Italialta ja Vuelta a Españalta. Mukana on myös vähän pienempiä ylämäkiä, esimerkiksi Belgiasta.
Kirjan näkökulma on yhdistelmä reittiopasta ja kilpapyöräilyn historiaa. Reitit esitellään tarkkuudella, joka soveltuu niiden ajamisesta kiinnostuneille, mutta ohessa tarjotaan kelpo annos Tour de Francen ja muun kilpapyöräilyn historiaa. Mäet esitellään numeroin ja kuvin; Pete Godingin valokuvat ovat hienoja. Jyrkkyysprosentteja on hauska vertailla paikalliseen mäkeen. Oma Lukonojanmäkemme pärjää kyllä monille rajummille nousuille jyrkkyydessään, mutta lyhythän se on.
Minulle kiinnostavin historiatieto liittyi italialaisen rautakauppiaan pojan Tullio Campagnolon vaiheisiin Croce d’Aunella: Campagnoloa otti päähän, kun vaihteiden vaihtamiseksi oli irrotettava koko takapyörä ja käännettävä se ympäri, eikä se onnistunut jäisin sormin. Suivaantunut Campagnolo kehitti pikalinkun, jollaisella pyörien renkaat nykyäänkin kiinnitetään paikoilleen. Campagnolo edisti myös vaihteistoja, ja vaikka Shimano ja SRAM ovatkin nykyään tärkeimmät polkupyörien voimansiirron valmistajat, Campagnolo oli pitkään ammattilaisten ykkösmerkki.
Yhteen pötköön luettuna Polkupyöräilyn klassikkonousut on aika toisteinen, mutta nättinä sohvapöytäkirjana, jota voi selailla sieltä täältä tai lueskella pidemmällä aikavälillä nousu kerrallaan se on mainio tapa tutustua ammattipyöräilyn historiaan – ja saada kenties matkavinkkejä.

Having went to France a few years ago and rode Alpe d'Huez and Mont Ventoux, this book brings back fond memories (mainly of joypain). Being a fan of Le Tour de France and the other pro races, I enjoyed how this book narrated the history of the passes and when they were included in the races. Great pictures too.

An amazing book looking at Europe's most astonishing cycle climbs, with jaw-dropping photographs by Pete Goding. A must buy for any cyclist or someone with an interest in the sport.

Very lovely book with great photographs and descriptions of the climbs and their histories. Definitely a coffee-table book rather than a sit-and-read-through. So what did I do with it?

Don´t know about the book but the Stelvio was definitely 5 Grimmaces out of 5!

Innostunut kirjoitustyyli ja upea kuvitus. Superlatiivit ja liioittelut hieman häiritsevä maneeri, mutta näistä huolimatta hienosti toteutettu kokonaisuus.
