هل تغضب اذا افترض احدهم ان جدك كان دودة او جدتك قربة ماء ام ان الغضب ينتابك اذا فقط قيل انك تنحدر من نسل القردة العليا؟

بترجمة اكثر من رائعة و تلخيص علمى واعى يشرح لنا الكاتب ثلاثة و ثلاثين شعبة من شعب الحيوان منذ الهلاميات و نجوم البحر مرورا بالديدان و الحشرات الى الزواحف و الطيور و من ثم الفقاريات وصولا الى الثدييات فى رحلة علمية ممتعة فى عمق الزمان و المكان رابطا ظروف البيئة بسلوك الحمض النووى فى التكيف و التطور معددا النظريات و الخلافات احيانا ليفتح لنا افاق جديدة للتبحر فى هذا العلم الذى يحتاج الى الكثير من الكتب و الأفلام لفهمه و الإلمام ببعض تفاصيله.

Without overburdening the reader with excessive details, this volume discusses the evolutionary relatedness amongst and between groups of animals based on analyses of molecular sequencing data and morphological data matrices.

Designed for the busy professional as well as the overworked student, this small paperback fits comfortably into your hand for ease of reading whilst strap-hanging on the subway, for example. It is 126 pages long, and includes tables, drawings and diagrammes, a list of additional readings, and an index. Chapters include:

Even though I really like this book, I do have one quibble: I dislike the author’s overly simplified description of the speciation process. Without naming it as such, he describes what sounds like allopatric speciation and ignores the other mechanisms whereby new species arise. Thus, his description of speciation is not entirely accurate and is woefully incomplete. In my opinion, Professor Holland could have easily devoted at least several paragraphs to describing the basic mechanisms whereby species arise and used a diagram to summarise that information. (But I do think that Oxford should have someone write a book about speciation for their “Very Short Introduction” series.) However, that said, I think this book is an engaging introduction or refresher for those who are interested in learning about a few of the many weird and wonderful animals out there.

This small paperback is part of Oxford’s growing collection of “Very Short Introduction” books that collectively have sold more than three million copies around the world. Written by experts in their fields and small enough to fit into a pocket, handbag or rucksack, these slim volumes are interesting, informative and very readable. Based on the titles I’ve read so far, I am a fan of this series because each book provides a readable distillation of its topic.

عالم الحيوان عالم غريب جدًا جدًا ومثير للاهتمام!
الكتاب يستعرض الادلة التطورية ونسب الحيوانات لبعضها وكيف الحيوانات كانت تظهر (حسيته يمكن يكون مكمل لكتاب التطور -مقدمة قصيرة جدًا-، بس لسه ماقرأت الثاني)، طبعًا هو (مقدمة قصيرة جدًا) لكنه كان عميق (مو الكتاب عميق، بس الاحياء عمومًا عميق) وحسيت واااوووو كيفففف كذااا؟؟ وهذا كله الاحياء يدرسه؟ اتذكر كيف كان الكل يستنقص من تخصص الاحياء وانه (تخصص بس حفظ) لكن حرفيًا واو واو..
ماعرف وش اقول بس مرة استمتعت وانا اقراه مع انه كان فيه اشياء غريبة، الشيء الوحيد اللي تمنيته هو ان الكتاب يحط اسماء المخلوقات اللي يتكلم عنها بالانقلش (هو يترجمها حرفيًا بالعربي) عشان اقدر ابحث عنها واشوف صورها، بس عمومًا كان جميل👍🏼

An enigmatic and engaging read. This book provides an easily accessible overview of the major groups within the part of the classification system concerning 'animals', sprinkled with intriguing historical facts and a smattering of good-natured humour. This isn't a dry textbook - the language is appealing, the subject is fascinating, and the author provokes consideration of the wonderous creativity of the natural world. Highly recommend.

Biology is a branch of science that confuses me with its vast number of names. Without my handicap, you might be able to get a very good birds eye view out of this VSI. But the book is still full of fascinating little factoids that entertain:

• A scientist mashed up a living sponge and passed it through a fine cloth (scientists can be cruel), and yet the cells crawled back together and reassembled into a new sponge. Sponges not only have to put up with us, they have to put up with bottlenose dolphins, who use them as a protection when foraging food in the sandy bottom.

• Invertebrate marvels: Today, surgeons still use leeches today to do blood-letting: In common complications of surgery, there can be build up of blood pressure in reconstructed tissues. Some deep-sea tube worms do not have guts. They rely on millions of living bacteria inside that can turn normally toxic hydrogen sulphide as an energy source to build food chemical. Octopus probably have the highest cognitive development of any invertebrates.

• Starfish eat clams by opening the clam a little and send in its stomach inside out, secrete enzymes to break down protein weakening the clam’s muscles.

لم استوعبها كلها لكن أدركت عن مدى اتساع هذا العالم
وعن التطور الهائل الذي حصل

لنأخذكم لأفكار الكاتب والمعلومات التي صدرت منه :

The Animal Kingdom: A Very Short Introduction (2011) by Peter Holland

For a fine summary of the book, see Grrlscientist's review. Since that's been done and dusted, I'll just make some random comments.

The book had no quotations when I arrived, so I added some. I also added a list of books cited by the book in case anyone wants more background.

In chapter 2, Holland recounts the "Scale of Nature" (called by Wikipedia the great chain of being), an old idea long since discredited among actual scientists. Holland says "It is easy to ridicule such ideas today." While that may true, such pre-scientific notions are far from dead in my home country of the USA. Surveys show that many Americans continue to believe in a literal Noah's Ark, including an ABC News poll from 2003 that put the figure at 60%. While such beliefs may be easy to ridicule, they are considerably harder to dislodge. And as the book Creationism's Trojan Horse: The Wedge of Intelligent Design (2004) documents, such beliefs have been skillfully weaponized to advance a conservative political agenda on this side of the pond. Well after that book was published, such retrograde thinking factored into the takeover of the US Supreme Court by a six of nine supermajority consisting of conservative Catholic justices. Who then proceeded to assert police state control over the uterus by overturning Roe v. Wade . So while such thinking may seem ridiculous within Holland's social circle, it is far from rare or politically impotent.

At the beginning of most biology books, most authors attempt to summarise the history of life into a chapter no matter the subject. This is what the animal kingdom is without the drama and long winded explanation. What Peter Holland has done is explained this very clearly and precisely. The diagrams are extraordinarily helpful and it can be used as a springboard for looking at more topics in depth. It really is a short introduction to the “the tree of life” and the branches composing Animalia. It is brief, but well written enough that you can appreciate the organisation and characteristics of each phylum and class. I recommend this book for all thinking about or studying Biology at uni - particularly first year.

🧫“Although animals have many different types of cells, there is one type that has influenced the entire biology of animals and the evolution of the Animal Kingdom. The cell in question is the epithelial cell.”

The 5th?? (I’m losing track) of my freshers reading list. This was a good book but was more like an extended essay with LOTS of Latin words for different animal phyla. I read it fairly fast as it was so short, but I’m not sure how much of it I’ll actually remember as it felt quite like an information overload. Pretty cool that the author will be teaching me though!

يشرح بيتر هولاند في مقدمته هذه المملكة الحيوانية ومالمقصود من هذا التصنيف, ثم يعرج على شعبها ومالكتاب إلا تفصيل لهذه الشعب المتفرعة.
لا أنكر أنني استفدت بعض الشئ من هذه المقدمة ولكن سرد أسماء حيوانات غريبة والإسهاب في وصفها كتابة أمر غير مجدي.. كان من الأفضل لو استعان الكاتب بصور أكثر لتوضيح المقصود وكان من الأفضل لي لو أني استعضت عن قراءة هذا الكتاب بفيلم وثائقي.

Super interesting even if somewhat very technical at times. Complimented my University module in animal diversity and helped me smash the essay question (even if I was told I relied on this book too much). Good even if not studying though because (as the Dawkins quote on the back says) Holland brings such enthusiastic energy into this and fills it with interesting facts on most pages.

تظن أنك تعرف الكثير عن الحيوانات و فصائلها حتى يصفعك هدا الكتاب الصغير بصفحاته القليلة!!فتعرف أنك لا تعرف إلا بعض الثدييات و الحشرات!! كتاب جميل خفيف يمكن قراءته بجلسة أو إثنتين لا أكثر...لغة جميلة و معلومات حديثة و معاصرة ولو أني أعيب على الترجمة التقوقع واستخدام التعريب القسري لما لا تعريب له ..

مقدمة قصيرة جدا لقضية قديمة جدا قدم التاريخ نفسه ، أبطالها مجموعة من العلماء والباحثين من بلاد متباعدة وأجيال متلاحقة تركوا الكرة الارضية بمدنها ومبانيها وشوارعها ، وذهبوا الى الطبيعة الخلابة المتفردة بجمالها وروعتها وقسوتها ووحشتها ، ذهبوا الى الأدغال والغابات الأستوائية والبرية ، عاشوا على ضفاف الانهار ، غاصوا في أعماق البحار والمحيطات ، تسلقوا قمم الجبال ، سلكوا دروب الصحراء وسهولها ووديانها وقضوا ليلهم في ظلام الكهوف والمغارات ، يقتفون أثر أنواع من الكائنات الحيات منها وما انقرض وطوته الطبقات والطيات ، في رحلة البحث عن أصولهم القديمة ونشأتهم الأولى ، بل الحق أنهم كانوا يبحثون عن " كيف بدأ الخلق " ؟؟؟ حتى وصلت بهم اقدامهم وأبحاثهم الى حدود الكامبري ومشارف الفانيروزويك ، دون أن يشعر أحدهم بملل أو يصيبه كلل ، فقد كانت الطبيعة السمحاء تحيط بهم أينما ساروا وسافروا وأينما حطوا رحالهم ، تشملهم بعطفها وتسقيهم من صافي شربها وتطعمهم من ثمارها وخيراتها ، فلما رأوا جزيل كرمها وجميل إنعامها ونفحات عطفها وحنانها راحوا يتغزلون فيها ويتغنون بها وبأهلها كأنهم منهم ونظائر لهم ، فكان أحدهم اذا صادف أحدا من أهلها في طريقه ، يستن بأفعال الصالحين والقديسين من أهل الديانات فيبتدأه بالسلام قائلا : السلام عليك يا أخي الطير ، السلام عليك يا أخي الشجر ، كيف حالك يا أخي المطر ، السلام عليك ايتها الانعام ، ومن جمله ما نقلوه الينا عما شاهدوه :

Animals are one of the most familiar and ubiquitous mental categories. They surround all of us, whether they are minuscule flies or oversize pets, and the human history would have been unimaginably different without our oversize reliance on animals. Aside from our daily experience, we learn about animals in school, but unless we end up majoring in biology very few of us go through the trouble of learning about these creatures on a deeper and more systematic level.

In "The Animal Kingdom: A Very Short Introduction" Peter Holland takes us on a journey of rediscovery of animals in all of their fascinating glory. This book can challenge and radically transform one's understanding of what is meant by the word "animal." It turns out that animals are much more diverse and heterogeneous than what most of us suspect. There are estimated millions of species of animals out there, and we'll probably never get a full catalog of them. Like with all other branches of the tree of life, most animals are extremely small or microscopic, live in regions far away from human habitats, and engage in lifestyles that make them extremely hard to detect and study. Even with the known species of animals, the process of categorization and classification can be extremely daunting. For the most of human history, including the past couple of centuries of rapid scientific progress, animals had been categorized in terms of their gross physiological features. This sort of classification worked more or less well for the larger species, but for some smaller ones it created a lot of puzzles. All of this has changed with the advent of DNA analysis which has put the task of animal classification on a much more rigorous footing. DNA analysis has brought about many interesting surprises, and it has shed the new light on the evolution of animals. Thanks to the combination of DNA analysis and some older techniques today we can classify animals into about 33 different phyla. Most of these phyla are completely unknown to anyone but the specialized biologists, and this very short introduction tries to shed some light on at least some of them.

One of the most wonderful aspects of this little book is that it always tries to keep the big picture in mind. Its aim is to offer understanding, and not just a dry recitation of various animals, species, and phyla. This approach is invaluable and makes even a book that is filled with recondite classification jargon extremely accessible and even fun to read. The evolution of animal life is one of the nature's greatest adventure stories, and Holland manages to convey much of its excitement. It was very hard for me to put this book down, and I found myself reaching for Wikipedia more often than not in order to find out more about some truly amazing animal species. This is definitely one of the best very short introduction books, and one of my favorite overall popular science books. Anyone who has a desire to understand the diversity of animal life will greatly benefit from going through this short and accessible resource.

Starting with a discussion of what makes an animal, followed by a brief overview of phylogeny, Peter Holland introduces us to the fascinating subject of zoology, using new advances in molecular biology. I always had a fascination with comparative anatomy, but he pointed out there are 33 ways to build an animal body, each one called a phylum. He takes us on a tour of the major phyla, starting with the simplest animals, the cnidaria, ctenophora and porifera, then working his way through more complicated organisms. A good, concise introduction to a fascinating subject.

A fascinating read. Wanted to read around my A-Levels and zoology is something that I’ve always found interesting. This concise tour of the animal kingdom was informative and inspiring. Just wish it was longer!
