Past master: Linda Bolton’s selection and analysis of Degas’s key works is thorough and unpretentious. She writes accessibly about inspiration, technique and effect, and also of the responses to the paintings. A little more biographical and historical background would have given even more context, but it’s a great ‘beginners’ guide’ which is I think the intent.
