Dulcie Crowder Gets Her Man

Rate this book
After her father's death, Dulcie Crowder leaves their El Dorado claim and travels to Hangtown. Her aim is matrimony and she sets her cap for the handsome deputy, Tom Walker. When Tom balks, she knows why. He wants a woman he can be proud to walk beside, so Dulcie tries hard to transform herself into a lady.

Tom vows to bring law and order to the hardscrabble gold rush town and knows Hangtown is no place for a wife and family. As Dulcie tries to turn his head and win his heart, he notices. So do the hoards of other lonely men in their community.

When Dulcie discovers a corrupt judge during the trial of a friend, she naturally turns to Tom. The deputy looks for evidence but Dulcie has other ideas on how to catch a varmint. As they both work for justice, does she jeopardize her chances of getting her man?

After her father’s death, the plucky but unpolished Dulcie Crowder leaves her home and moves to Hangtown to live.

The book's blurb described her aim as being matrimony and so I was a little wary that the book would be all about a man-obsessed/marriage obsessed and unlikeable heroine but the blurb did not do the book justice.

Instead, it's about the adventures of a young, capable and delightfully lovable young woman, forced to find her way in the world after her father dies. There's more to her than just catching a man and she has a sense of right and wrong and is a much better show than even Tom Walker the Deputy. I enjoyed this book a lot found Dulcie a very likeable character and was sorry when the book ended.

I loved Dulcie Crowder. She's not a simpering miss or a drawing room daisy. She's a straight-talker, straight-shooter, and fiercely loyal. She's honest and honorable and adaptable to tough circumstances. In Deputy Tom Walker, Dulcie knows she's met her match, and so does the reader. This story is history at its most entertaining, set in the turbulent Hangtown during the California Gold Rush. You'll be totally charmed.
