I must say, even reading the Introduction section clarified several things about the CCENT/CCNA certifications, about which I was wondering. Wendell Odom plainly explained the separation of CCNA into ICND 1 & 2. You are CCENT certified with ICND1 exam. Cisco saw fit to gear this certification to prepare anyone with "the knowledge and skills most needed for an entry-level technician in a small enterprise network". You can then become CCNA certified upon successful completion of the ICND2 exam, otherwise, become CCNA certified with the single CCNA exam. Therein is the difference between one- and two-book study sets. Each book of the ICND 1 & 2 set is prepared separate of each other, with minimal overlap, but key points are re-iterated only if so on the exams.
Since the CCNA exam material has not changed content from the 2007 2nd Edition, the publisher has added value to the 2011 3rd Edition with 1) a free CCNA Simulator Lite, which has some disabled commands over the full-priced version, and 2) a 70% discount on the Premium Edition eBook which includes two additional exams' worth of practice test questions. Also, the eBook comes in EPUB and PDF for reading on virtually any device you have. In the 3rd Edition, Mr. Odom has divided the long subnetting section into smaller chapters for easier understanding, and updated any technical data that has changed in the last 4 years. Subnetting can be difficult on the exams, so clearly written study materials to get a handle on calculating subnets, and other related topics, are very important.
There are many excellent charts, graphs, and updated figures and facts of technology changes over the last four years, and the material is clearly written. Each chapter begins with "Do I Already Know This?" pre-test, with answers in the back of the book. The Exam Preparation Tasks in each chapter help you to be more successful with the CCNA exams, as well as additional study resources. A chart in the Introduction lists ICND Exam Topics and the related book's part(s) for study.
The companion DVDs include such content as subnetting videos and practice problems, practice scenarios, author's website and blog, and a mapping guide link to Ciscopress.com for other extras. There are extra printable appendices, offering practicum for 9 chapters and outlines for the on-disc videos. Each DVD has easy-to-read menus and laid-out very well.
