First I'll say.. I don't follow the directions. I thought they were just... too long winded for my kids. I DID start my kids off with 10-steps for practicing misspelled words, but I quickly realized that was just tedious, they hated it, and it wasn't worth their time. We use a short-but-sweet method for learning those words now- something that isn't in the book.

So my review on this book is based on the word LISTS, not based on the activities.

As word lists go, they don't always make sense to me. I prefer to teach spelling based on spelling patterns, and this book generally follows that, as well, but it sometimes (usually?) covers more than one rule per list. My kids are also 2 lists apart, and for some reason lately the older child has easier words than the younger. I don't get it.

But the reason it gets 4 stars is because it is WORKING. My kids recognize the spelling patterns and rarely misspell words. Even my son, who couldn't spell his way out of a wet paper bag before we started this program, is now a very good speller.

So whether I understand or not doesn't matter. It's working, and that is what I really care about.

A spelling course for parents or non-teachers for students aged 8+. The 12-step quick-start guide (~40 pages) will show how to give placement tests that will determine where to being from levels A-K, then how to teach from a word list (~100 pages), which is followed by chapters on orthographic pedagogy (how to teach how to spell).

It’s a thorough spelling curriculum for K-12th grade. A bit overwhelming to read through at first, but gets better. I had to read it in multiple sittings.

4 stars because I am just beginning to use it. I do have high hopes!

This is the spelling book we are using with my 9 yr old. It is helping him feel confident in spelling and, consequently, more willing to write. It requires a little time each day doing seatwork, so it may be tedious for some kids, but it also comes with great game ideas for teaching spelling.
