July 3, 2025Dzięki tej książce znacznie lepiej zrozumiałem historię Włoch oraz wpływ, jaki miała na nią dynastia Agnellich. Autorka w niezwykle precyzyjny i interesujący sposób prowadzi czytelnika przez najważniejsze wydarzenia z życia tej wpływowej rodziny, ukazując ich ścisłe powiązania z historią gospodarczą i społeczną kraju. Szczególnie fascynujące było przedstawienie roli, jaką w rozwoju imperium Fiata odegrała II wojna światowa.
Od pierwszych stron książki staje się jasne, że historia Agnellich daleka jest od bajki. Życie członków tej rodziny naznaczone było przez tragedie, straty i nieustanną presję życia na świeczniku. Każda historia męskich przedstawicieli rodu przesycona jest mrokiem, traumą i poczuciem utraty kontroli nad własnym losem. Autorka świetnie pokazuje, jak śmierć i cierpienie były nieodłącznymi elementami życia tej potężnej rodziny, która nie mogła sobie pozwolić nawet na spokojne przeżycie żałoby, będąc nieustannie ocenianą przez opinię publiczną.
Ciekawym aspektem książki jest również ewolucja rzeczywistości, w jakiej funkcjonowała rodzina. Od czasów Gianniego Agnellego, kontrolującego wpływowy dziennik „La Stampa”, gdy wszelkie skandale można było łatwo zamieść pod dywan, aż po współczesność, kiedy era internetu bezlitośnie ujawniła problemy rodziny, takie jak zmagania Johna z uzależnieniami. John jako jedyny wydaje się świadomy toksycznych schematów w rodzinie, podejmując wysiłek, by zmienić swoje życie i przerwać błędne koło przekazywane przez pokolenia.
Największe wrażenie zrobiły na mnie właśnie te rodzinne relacje – pełne napięć, niuansów i niewypowiedzianych emocji między pokoleniami, a także między rodzicami a dziećmi. Szczególnie poruszająca była historia Edoarda, którego życie okazało się najbardziej tragiczne i pełne smutku. Jego odrzucenie przez rodzinę oraz brak miłości ze strony rodziców były chwilami wręcz rozdzierające serce. To bolesne przypomnienie, że bogactwo i status społeczny nie gwarantują zdrowia, równowagi psychicznej ani szczęśliwego życia.
Oczywiście książka w dużej mierze opowiada też o ekonomii, rozwoju Fiata oraz kryzysach, przez które firma przechodziła, walcząc o przetrwanie aż do 2025 roku. Nie wszystkie fragmenty są równie interesujące, niektóre rozdziały mogą wydać się mniej angażujące, ale patrząc na całość – jest to niezwykle satysfakcjonująca i wartościowa lektura.
Jeśli ktoś chce lepiej poznać Włochy od podszewki, "Imperium Agnellich” będzie doskonałym wyborem, choć uprzedzam, że momentami może wymagać od czytelnika nieco cierpliwości. Niemniej polecam!

Author's lack of writing ability resulted in a haphazard way of documenting the Agnelli family and the vicissitudes experienced by the firm - attempt at writing in a non-chronological order was poorly executed and resulted in a confusing read. Author also skimmed through events that would have been insightful from a business standpoint; the author seemed more interested in documenting the affairs of Gianni Agnelli as opposed to the business-specific aspects of FIAT. This topic deserves a better biographer, like Ron Chernow, who would have better balanced the personal trivia and the corporate minutiae.

Niezła książka. Świetnie się ją czytało . Nie omija skandali i ciemnych plam w ogólności. A mimo to nie ma w niej posmaku szukania taniej sensacji. Historia rodziny Agnellich jest bardzo ciekawa, bo sprzęgnięta z historią Italii ostatnich ponad stu lat. Z oczywistego powodu, którym jest FIAT (Fabrica Italiana Automobili Torino), której jednym z założycieli był Giovanni Agnelli. Nie jest to jednak historia typu „od nędzy do piniendzy” 😀 ponieważ nie pochodził on z biednej rodziny, choć i nie arystokratycznej. I tak przez kolejne dekady aż po współczesność drugiej dekady XXI wieku. Jest tu jakiś wzór przekazywania władzy. Giovanni przekazał stery swojemu wnukowi - słynnemu Gianniemu: playboyowi, który przez całe życie unieszczęśliwiał swoją żonę niezliczonymi zdradami, a dla dzieci był co oschły i obojętny (co było przyczyną tragedii jaka spotkała jego syna). Z kolei Gianni przekazał stery swojemu wnukowi, Johnowi Elkannowi. Nie obyło się bez intryg, skomplikowanych operacji prawno finansowych, z konfliktem rodzinnym w tle i tajemnicami machinacji podatkowo finansowych. Głowa może od tego rozboleć.
Czy jest w tej historii jakiś morał lub głębsze, większe znaczenie? Raczej nie. Aczkolwiek zawsze można coś na siłę znaleźć. Autor jednak nie przesadzał z tworzeniem symboliki i to mu zapisuję na korzyść.

Historia, której fragmenty mogłyby służyć za scenariusz do "Sukcesji". Opowieść o rodzinie, która kilkukrotnie dźwignęła na swoich barkach upadające Włochy. Poznajemy jej blaski, w osobach wielkich patriarchów, ale i cienie, w postaciach odstawionych na dalszy plan i pozostawionych z ich własnymi demonami. Nie jest to cukierkowa laurka, a rzetelne spojrzenie na "włoską rodzinę królewską".
Sceny z życia familii Agnellich są przedstawione ciekawie, żywo, momentami można poczuć się jak we wnętrzu jednego z setek pokoi w jednej z dziesiątek rodzinnych rezydencji.
Jako kibic Juventusu rozczarował mnie niemal zupełny brak historii związanych z klubem. Oczekiwałem, że przeczytam więcej na temat Agnellich zasiadających w gabinetach Juventusu.

I have to preface that I write this review from a biased perspective. As a lifelong Juventus fan, I've long been fascinated with the Agnelli family and the first half of this book highlights so much about why I wanted to learn more. The second half of the book is where it really takes off though. Reading about Sergio Marchionne's rise and his work at Fiat-Chrysler was insightful and motivating. I would highly recommend this book to anyone interested in business, even if you aren't interested in the non-business content related to the Agnelli family. It is worth it to get a better understanding of Marchionne and how he worked.

This book is terrible. It has an average of 4,3/5 in Amazon with very good reviews and some few scathing ones; should've listened to the latter ones.
It's a 360-pages magazine article. The first part is what actually handles about how the Agnellis became one of the most powerful Italian families. The second part deals with the misfortunes of Fiat and how the youngest of the Agnellis chose a savvy and hardworking CEO; reinventing between them the ailing auto company. It's a bit gossipy regarding Gianni Agnelli's will and how his heir sidelined his half non-Agnelli siblings and the rest of the family. That's what ther reader wanted in this book, beside facts and the author's analysis insight.
The third part is a neverending drop-naming, car model-describing, yawn-inducing 150-pages essay about how Chrysler was saved thanks to Fiat. Except it wasn't. The wonderful CEO only came up with a bandaid to Fiat and then Fiat-Chrysler problems (something the author didn't know at that time, but didn't even bother to elaborate).
But the worst part is that the Agnelly family history that is the subject of the book is never retaken, and the book ends abruptly in a haste.
A word of advice, go watch a Youtube video on the Agnelli family, save yourselves from this book.

Very fun story.
Lots of biographical/ historical information on the creation of the Fiat group of companies, and the fights and travails of the Agnelli family.
Half of the book is about that
And after Sergio's entry the book picks up pace and gives very good details about Sergio's modus operandi. Sadly the book ends in 2011; post which they have spun off Ferrari, and embarked on more capital loosening initiatives.
Loved the details of the difficulties with running auto companies, and how Sergio's different approach made FCA stronger.

Książka jest wszystkim, czyli niczym. Nie jest porządnym reportażem, autorka często snuje domysły na temat tego co ktoś MÓGŁ POMYŚLEĆ. Brakuje tutaj związków przyczynowo skutkowych odnośnie działania firmy. Zdarzają się grafomańskie opisy i porównania. Warstwa edytorska leży, mnóstwo błędów interpunkcyjnych. Objętościowo mogłaby być krótsza o 30% nie tracąc nic ze swojej treści. Najlepszą częścią tej książki jest okładka.

Berättelsen om familjen Fiat, hur de flera gånger var nära att tappa företaget och hur de nästan stod på ruinens brant. De var tidigare ett italienskt företag men är nu ett globalt efter köp av lancia och Chrysler. De lyckades köpa 30% av Chrysler gratis i utbyte mot ett samarbete med hjälp av Sergio Marchionne som har styrt upp företaget till världsklass.

Amzing insight into the world of Fiat, the Agnelli dynasty, Enzo Ferrari and of course the current chief of Fiat/Chrysler — Sergio Marchionne. I love the way the author told the story, section by section, anecdote after business model. A page turner for anyone interested in how family owned businesses with real wealth move pawns, die on their own sword, and king-make members of industry. I recommend this book for anyone who is an auto enthusiast, corporate profiler or biography junkie.

This was a well researched book by Jennifer Clark. Her writing style and balanced approach to portraying such a remarkable dynasty are phenomenal. The book spotlights Gianni Agnelli and carefully connects his relationship with John Elkann and Sergio Marchionne. A good read and one for anyone interested in the automotive industry, business titans, or how business truly works.
