After A Winter Scandal comes a new season for unexpected love in this sparkling second novel in New York Times bestselling author Candace Camp’s Legend of St. Dwynwen trilogy.
No one in tiny Chesley knows the truth about Damaris Howard; a woman of wealth and beauty, she rarely allows anyone to get close. Her past was marked by scandal and abandonment—better to stay aloof and reinvent herself.
Then Damaris meets Alec Stafford, the Earl of Rowden. The tall, handsome border lord is a man of quiet but deep passion, raised to show no weakness and burned once before by a woman’s love. But when he and Damaris cross paths inside London society, they set sparks of attraction blazing—and rumors flying.
And when someone abducts Damaris from the city streets, Alec must stake more than his reputation to rescue her. . . . Finding out who’s behind a dangerous plot plunges Alec and Damaris together in an intimacy that melts their well-guarded reserve, proving that true love’s rich rewards may just be worth the risks.
Candace Camp is the New York Times bestselling author of over sixty books.
Her first novel, *Bonds of Love*, was published by Jove Publishing in 1978, under the pseudonym Lisa Gregory. Two pseudonyms (Kristin James and Sharon Stephens)and many books later, Candace writes under her own name Candace Camp and still loves creating stories.
Candace lives in Austin, Texas, with her husband and is the mother of Young Adult author Anastasia Hopcus.
The cold, aloof Border Lord Earl and the beautiful, confident widow - a totally made for each other couple. Damaris was the most beautiful woman he had ever seen. The kind of woman an artist’s hands would itch to draw. To whom poets wrote sonnets... ..He was drawn toward Damaris like a magnet to true north.
Their connection is beautiful and strong, and their own notions of propriety get swept away before the intensity of their feelings and passion. I like the fact that they don't fight this attraction or let contrived MUs engender rifts. Whether alone or in a roomful of people, they have eyes only for each other. “You have hair like midnight,” he told her, his voice gravelly and still heavy with passion. “Then yours is like sunlight...Or perhaps it’s more like moonlight.”
His face relaxed in the manner that she was beginning to understand was a smile in another man. *sigh* Alec is highly dibs-able.
Oh, and don't go looking for a consistently gripping plot or mystery. But if you like reading a book totally devoted to a besotted couple (like I do!), then this is a book for you!
Enough substance for a novella...but not enough for a full-length novel. I was kinda tricked into reading this by the fact that I liked the first book in this Camp series, A WINTER SCANDAL (Legend of St. Dwynwen), and two characters we met in that book are the H and h of this one. Now, if you haven't read the first book, you can still read this one, but, really, why bother? That "Legend of St. Dwynwen", which supposedly ties this series together, doesn't make the stories fall outside the Candace Camp Generic Romance Formula box.
Hero Alec Stafford, the Earl of Rawden, was the estranged friend of Gabriel, the hero of Book One. They were on the outs because Gabriel believed Alec had had something to do with the disappearance and death of Gabriel's sister. Well, that all got cleared up in the first book and that's also where Alec meets Damaris Howard, mysterious widow (and friend of Thea, heroine of Book One) living in the neighborhood.
So now that Thea and Gabriel are happily married, it's time for Alec's story. His romance will obviously involve lovely Damaris but that's all I should really say about the plot because it's such a been-there/done-that one that you should go into the book without knowing anything. Perhaps there will be something there to surprise you. (One can hope. Nothing surprised me but I'm old and have read way too many HRs over the years.)
Not even the characters pleased me. They're OK people but much blander than I had expected from the reading of Book One. Also we spend way too much time inside their heads and, unfortunately, their thoughts don't seem much more complex than those of your average family pet, except that instead of obsessing about walks and kibbles and bits, these two spend all their time thinking lusty thoughts and agonizing over that "love" thing (Is it love, is it love, is it love, is it love that I'm feeling?) and where their relationship will go. You know, how could they possibly marry? There's some familiar-to-HR baggage in the hero's past and a dirty secret in the heroine's which may doom them to unhappiness.
Well, if you care and if you like Candace Camp, read the book. I'd say don't buy it, however. Borrow it from a friend (whom we pity for having spent her money, so maybe treat her to lunch or at least a Starbucks coffee) or get it from the library.
It was no great surprise to me that this book continues Camp's Legend of St. Dwynwen trilogy with two intriguing characters from A Winter Scandal: Damaris, Thea's mysterious gal-pal, and Alec, the Earl of Rawdon, Gabriel's on-again-off-again friend. Anytime two side characters of opposite gender take an immediate dislike to each other, you can count on a sequel where they pair off.
Long story short: Rawdon talks Damaris into attending a ton event hosted by his sister. Damaris knows she shouldn't, since if anyone recognizes her, her scandalous past could prove embarrassing, but she can't resist. And sure enough, she's recognized.
Her long-lost grandmother is not happy to see her, and when grandma's not happy, ain't nobody happy. She basically tells Damaris to hie herself out of London and if possible off the planet, or…
The next day, as Damaris arrives home from a shopping trip, a couple men snatch her off the street in front of her house. They toss her in a coach and take her to the seedy side of Town, but she manages to escape. When she realizes they're waiting for her again at her house, she runs to Rawdon and asks for his help.
Rawdon's a take-charge kinda guy, and he's keen to be
If only Damaris would stay put! She doesn't, Rawdon gives chase
And so do a few assorted bad guys.
As for the person behind it all, I'll just say Camp has a great hand with a mystery. The set up was there but I did not see it coming. Another good read.
My Rating System:
One star—Blows (skip it) Two stars—It was OK (if it sounds interesting, buy it used) Three stars—I liked it (pick it up next time you're looking for a good read) Four stars—I loved it (make a special trip) Five stars—*Grrrowr!* (nuff said)
This book did a fabulous job with the build up of sexual tension, affectionate teasing and just plain getting to know you time. I rate it highly just for that. I felt the characters to be so endearing that the cookie cutter plot and unlikely situations were totally just scenery that gladly didn't distract.
Also this dude has got lines lol...
He reached out, his hand cupping her cheek, and he brushed his thumb across her lips. “I will have you in my bed. I promise.” Damaris lifted her chin. “And do I have nothing to say about it?” “Of course.” His lips lifted slightly. “You shall say, ‘Yes.’
Actually, it was better than I expected. The h kicks ass. Literally. This is weird because, I didn't really care for the plot, but I liked the main characters, and it's usually the other way around. The author is still entirely too over descriptive, especially with the characters thoughts. Ugh, we get it. We got it the first 100 times she thought it. You don't have to do that to us. And a lot of the actions/reactions including passing characters, seemed like they were too modern. But maybe I misunderstood and I had the wrong century in my own mind. I really don't care at all about the characters of the third book, so I'm going to skip it. Neither interests me.
I CAN'T BELIEVE HOW MUCH I ENJOYED THIS BOOK, WTF, not, like, I was expecting it to be terrible or anything, but I had some worries early on what with the whole situation of the heroine (she's the illegitimate daughter of a nobleman, someone is trying to kidnap her, WILL THE HERO ACCEPT HER EVEN THO SHE IS OF ~IGNOBLE BIRTH~/WILL HE SAVE HER). Unfortch some of those worries were not unfounded, as the ending gets kind of ... yeesh*, but on the fortch side of things, YOOOOOOOOOOO, THAT ROMANCE THO. Damaris is so great - she's outgoing and flirty and sexually experienced and she's never shamed or whatever for being a widow/having sexual experience (altho tragically this book does delve into the sort of trope that frequently accompanies heroines who have done it before they meet the hero, aka Sex With The Hero Is So Much Better Than Any Sex She Ever Had Before, O, She Never Before Knew Pleasure!!! because nobody in historical romance novels is aware of masturbation, I guess) and she Takes Charge of her own business and even saves Alec, The Hero, a couple times which is nice - AND while I was super worried that Alec would be an unbearable asshole given he is, after all, Icy & Proud, he is in actual execution an upstanding, decent guy who doesn't really give a fuck about society's expectations. WHATEVS, HE AIN'T CARE, HE'S GONNA MARRY THE WOMAN HE LOVES AND ALL Y'ALL CLASSISTS CAN EAT IT (That said, I love/appreciate that this series acknowledges that he can do this/get away with doing this because he is so very privileged both in terms of wealth & title.)
*THE YEESH: There's a bit where Damaris explains her valid resentment of her noble father for basically abandoning her and her mother to marry a noblewoman, and Alec's like CAN'T U SEE, HE DID ALL THESE THINGS BCS HE LOVED U, and I'm like, man, she's ... allowed to feel hurt by her dad leaving. IDC what society expected of him; she's not in the wrong to resent him for leaving her.
BUT the biggest yeesh iiiiiis, Damaris is threatened with rape at the climax, and Alec saves her before [spoiler] can actually assault her but at the same time it's kind of like: wow, really? Could we just take rape off the table? I'd like that. So that's why this book only has three stars - that just really soured my Sweet Tarts. (Narratively I understand why it was present - Camp needed a reason in text to essentially, uh, eliminate [spoiler] and the obstacle he presented to Alec and Damaris' future together - but I also think that it would have been possible to replace that scene with, say, Alec acting out in self-defense vs rescuing Damaris from rape. So.)
Otherwise: very enjoyable! The OTP is lots of fun! Some thoughtful critiques of class unfortunately marred by inconsistency. Could've done without sexual violence there at the end. Love love LOVE that the romantic hero is NOT an asshole! (Ah. Such high standards.)
I forgot to note this but Genevieve and Myles are amaaaazing in that book. Both are supporting characters, with Genevieve in a more substantial role as Alec's sister; it's her eventual approval of Damaris, the heroine of A Summer Seduction, that signals the emotional resolution of the book (plus Genevieve and Damaris' awkward proto-friendship is just delightful esp at the end). But Myles frequently accompanies Genevieve, and they are GREAT together, arguing a great deal, yes, but never meanly, and they are clearly super in love and it is A W E S O M E.
The second book in this series and it casts a light on Alec, Earl of Rowden and Damaris Howard. It has the mystery element which I think is fun to read and the British ton rules and etiquette that they love to throw away.
Damaris, comes from questionable birth, and she is entering the ton world for the first time. And certain people are not fond of this entrance into society. She comes in contact with Alec again and she is drawn to him. He has an aura about him she can’t seem to walk away from. Alec, is seen as stubborn, hard and cold sometimes. He is a passionate man and runs to situations he should think about first. But he is impulsive, especially when it comes to Damaris. She is in need of a protector after she runs away from her captors one night, but they catch up to her and Alec puts himself forward to protect her. They embark on a journey to get Damaris to safety and Damaris is forced to face situations that would put her in danger to save those she loves. However, Alec would always come after her no matter where she goes.
It’s a fun edition to the series and it definitely keeps you entertained. I liked the mysterious element to it with Damaris’ story and how almost predatorial Alec was with her. He cares so much that it becomes hard for him to articulate it in words. The passion between them sizzles as well. You believe the chemistry.
Well, this is the third Candace Camp that I have read and I thoroughly enjoyed. This is the second book of the trilogy and I honestly enjoyed this far more than the first one. The H and h are far better drawn out though there is just too much meaningless sex scenes, though I am not complaining ;)... I really liked the narrative and the pace of the story. Both the main characters, Alex Stafford, Lord Rawdon and Damaris Howard, the widow has been portrayed in the first story, The Winter Scandal, and this was their story. As usual the heroine was a really strong character. Her wanting to become Rawdon’s mistress to keep themselves together showed how strongly she loved him. One of the things about Camp’s writing is her strong, level-headed heroines. She portrays them well and as a result I am becoming a huge fan of her romances. I am starting the Mad Moreland series soon and I hope it’ll be as good as these ones.
As the second book in the series this one is far eclipsed by the first book.... While I enjoyed Damaris & Alec characters, the plot was all over the place. Literally, they trampled all over the countryside and it was very congested to read about. The romance was sparky but took forever to get on with it. Lastly, the ending was like oh well, everyone will just have to deal with my decisions. When.....historical romance readers know this isn’t traditionally how it goes. Overall: meh. Take it or leave it.
I read this because I liked the first book in the series but this, I found really boring. Everything about the plot and the characters were formula and predictable. I usually don’t mind formula if the characters are interesting but even the chemistry here is so blah. I just can’t seem to get myself to care about the hero and heroine. They just don’t have layers that make you want to root for them. I tried until the last page but even the ending (with the villain) is so convenient and kinda wrong. I really wanted to like this one.
For some reason I forgot this was the second in the series and thought it was the first - so I was confused when I recognized the story of Matthew found by the heroine of the first... This hurdle skirted, the story was good - although I had sussed out the real villain fairly early. The end is rather abrupt- it would have been interesting to read how Alec was able to sweep away and overcome all the obstacles in the way. Good holiday fare.
The beginning and the end were probably the best part of the book. The middle part seemed to drag on, and despite all the action in trying to evade kidnappers and possible assassins and even the surprising villain of the piece, it was not enough to maintain my interest. Having said that, I liked Alec and Damaris, especially the former who never saw Damaris as anyone less, even after he knew of her past.
I enjoyed reading this book. It was hard to put down, there was a lot going on. I liked both the H & the h. They were attracted to each other but Alec was respectful, did not push her into intimacy. The second half probably could have had a few less love scenes and I would have liked an epilogue. I guess Alec's story really begins in the first book and their story continues into the 3rd book. I gave it a 5- rating.
Although this is the second in a trilogy, you really don't need to read the first book to understand what's going on here. It's just not my type of book. I would never have begun reading it had I not received it as part of a book bundle. It's about what I expected to be, but I cannot say that I enjoyed reading it.
Alex and Damaris story was very intriguing. He has promised himself not be foolish ever again where it come to matters of the heart. She is hiding a secret about her true identity. While trying to protect her from unknown dangers, they get to know each other and come to understand not everything is, as it seems. Quite enjoyed this story. Highly Recommend. Happy Reading!
A great read with intrigue, romance, and adventure. I enjoyed the plotting but there's a difference between romance and sex. I felt like the story would have been better with more intrigue. I loved the characters and read all three books in this series.
I mean, they certainly are attracted to each other and have some chemistry, but other than that there is not much to it. Still, despite the mystery playing only a very small part in the story there was still a good ending for it.
Ritroviamo i personaggi di "Gli amanti d'inverno" ed ora saranno altri due protagonisti ha capitolare per amore, se riusciranno ha sopravvivere ai malintenzionati che li obbligano ad un lungo viaggio.
Camp is a fabulous author. I’m enjoying this series immensely. I will read the final novel at some point since I really liked Myles in this series but the FMC annoys me greatly.
I enjoyed this book, indeed the whole story was entertaining. Books like this one, are crafted well, and fast-paced. The couple, Alec and Damaris, form a soul-deep bond whilst they're being chased by unknown predators.
