About the author

John Heine is an experienced scientific and sport diver. He has dived in many areas of the world, including the arctic and Antarctica, temperate kelp forests, estuaries, tropical reefs, and freshwater cavern environments.
John became certified as a NAUI Instructor in 1980, and as an Instructor Trainer and Course Director in 1982. He is certified as an Ice Diving and Nitrox Specialty Instructor, CPR Instructor, and DAN O2 Instructor, and as a cavern diver. He has conducted many leadership level training programs for NAUI, and was awarded NAUI’s Outstanding Service Award in 1992.
He earned a B.S. in Biological Sciences from the University of California at Irvine, and a Masters Degree in Marine Science from the Moss Landing Marine Laboratories of the California State University. He is a past President of the American Academy of Underwater Sciences (AAUS), which awarded him the Conrad Limbaugh Memorial Award for Scientific Diving Leadership in 2007.
John taught scientific diving for 18 years at the Moss Landing Marine Laboratories, and has conducted scientific diving projects in many parts of the world.
John is an accomplished writer and photographer. He has published scientific articles in journals such as the Journal of Phycology, Journal of Experimental Marine Biology and Ecology, Marine Ecology Progress Series, Polar Biology, and Journal of Chemical Ecology. His diving-related publications include books on Cold Water Diving, Advanced Diving Technology and Techniques, and Dry Suit Diving for NAUI, Scientific Blue Water Diving Guidelines for the California Sea Grant Program, and articles in the Proceedings of the American Academy of Underwater Sciences, NOAA Diving Manual, SOURCES, the Journal of Underwater Education, and Underwater USA. His underwater photographs have appeared in catalogs, textbooks, magazines, and educational programs. He is a contributing Editor for SOURCES, the Journal of Underwater Education.
John worked as the Diving Safety Officer for Moss Landing Marine Laboratories of the California State University for many years, and currently is the editor of CalCOFI Reports. He has served as a member of the diving control board for the National Science Foundation, Office of Polar Programs, and currently works as the Diving Safety Officer for the US Antarctic Program.
