Greg is having a bad morning. He overslept and is late for work. All he really wants is a good strong cup of joe. He's not going to get it. Things might be going from bad to worse before the day is over...
Adam Light resides in northeast Florida with his beautiful wife and daughter, and their two fur sons, Walker and Aspen.
For years, he's peeked out at you from your slightly open closet door, or grasped at the little toes you carelessly left uncovered. His stories have been published in horror anthologies such as Doorbells at Dusk, the Bad Apples: Halloween Horror series, and Dead Roses: Five Dark Tales of Twisted Love, to name a few.
Now, you can find all of his work under one gorgeous cover in Dreams for the Dying, the definitive collection of Adam Light's tantalizing tales. Be sure to pick it up now, before it's too late.
This is just not Greg's day. He overslept and can't find his shoes. There's no food in the house and no time for coffee.
He doesn't know it yet, but things are about to get a whole lot worse.
Light's first published short story is suspenseful and genuinely creepy. Even if you've figured out what's going on, you keep reading to see what can possibly happen next.
3.5 Stars. A man wakes up late, cannot find anything clean to wear, the line at the Starbucks is out the door....and this is only the beginning of a day gone so wrong. Really good short story, will read more by this author.
A strong debut by a fantastic new talent. This story starts off in a deceptively simple way, but it pays off with unfolding complexity in the end. I found the ending to be quite emotionally touching. Excellent read if you enjoy "Twilight Zone" style stories.
When I first started reading this story I was rather intrigued by what I was reading. I could see some traces of emotion, desperation and sadness. Maybe a little faint happiness. You could feel Greg's apprehension through the story. It was descriptive and I feel he used a good amount of imagination. But by the time I had neared the end I started to feel some confusion set in. Like it lacked some closure and I felt a bit let down. Even though you can figure out what happens I feel it could have had a bit more solid. 2.5 stars
A good thriller type story. Can't say much without giving it away. A disorganized man is trying to get ready for work, is already late, and is having trouble finding his shoes, and such. It gets weirder from there. Check it out.
I'm keeping my word. I said I'd be back to tell you about more of Adam Light's books and here I am.
Greg awakens with a sense of urgency. A quick glance at his clock confirms it. He’s overslept and it’ll be a mad dash to get to work on time. He forgoes breakfast, figuring he’ll grab a java at Starbucks and throws on the cleanest clothes he can find.
He spots one of his shoes but for the life of him, can’t find the other. Where is it? With no time to search any longer, he throws on a dirty pair of tennis shoes and heads out the door.
A quick glance at his living room gives him a sense that it’s different, empty somehow.
Traffic isn’t too bad until he gets close to Starbucks. Cars are lined up around the block. A huge SUV gives up its spot and he squeezes into line.
Crushing pain seizes his chest. Oh God, not a heart attack. As the pain subsides and leaves completely he has to give up his place in line or he’ll be late for work.
Just a few minutes late, he sneaks to his desk while no ones paying attention. Before he knows it, it’s time for lunch. How could that be?
Why the feelings of dread, the panic attacks, the missing time? What is it about today?
While not as polished as his later works, I still had a great time reading Gone, Adam’s first published book.
The suspense builds, you feel Greg’s confusion and panic, and then the twist is revealed.
Anyone who likes short stories with a feel of The Dark Side or The Twilight Zone will like this.
Gone is another short read from Adam Light – and good job it is, because my mind can only take so much!
This book is right up my street. I don’t see how it could have been improved. The mental turmoil Greg goes through is unbelievably well described. You could easily understand his feelings, his emotions; they are so real! It honestly made me wonder whether that is the way I would react if I ever found myself in Greg’s shoes. Shoe, rather, because he lost the other one.
Intrigued yet? Pick it up. You won’t be sorry. The only thing you need to have as you start reading this story is an open mind. The author’s amazing ability to convey the eerie atmosphere will do the rest, do not fear. Oops. Maybe you should.
A five star read, not to be missed. This author has got me hooked.
Squirt mustard breakfast, disappearing possessions. Late forever more.
It seems that the result of a lifetime if horror fandom has had the unintended result that nothing scares me anymore, nothing but the old school subtle style of Hitchcock and the Twilight Zone. Gone could have easily have been an episode of the latter, and creeped me out at several points as the tension mounted. As a somewhat spaced out slacker, I could feel the frustrated confusion of the main character when he was late for work and his things kept going missing. Gone does a nice job of creating shared uncertainties between the narrator and reader which gives the story a more (un)realistic feel.
Grabbed this from Amazon with a piece of my gift card awhile back since it was the only one by this author that I hadn't read yet. Was looking to kill some time and decided to read it at last. It was a quick little story, and I was engrossed in trying to figure out what was happening with the character. Started out simple enough, wake up late, seems like you can't find what you need, all in a rush... we've all been there, I'm sure. I know I have. But when the weird stuff just keeps getting worse, and you start losing chunks of time... Oh no. So I had to know why. I agree with all the other reviewers who bring up Twilight Zone. I could totally see it as a TZ episode, black and white. I liked how it played out, but I felt like the hit me like a curveball, out of left-field. But, being a short story, I can accept odd happenings without much quibble. In fact, weird little shorts like this are one of the reasons why I like short stories so well, and why I always liked watching the old TZ episodes. So it worked for me. A solid 3 stars, liked it, and I'm most eager to see more from this author!
Fantastic - when i first began reading it i thought ok Greg is running late for work but as i got into the story. I could feel he really didn,t know what had happened to him. He was a little confused. It has been compared to a Twilight zone episode and i agree. I was a big fan of that show. Gone was very well written , fast paced . Kept me engrossed till the very end. Look forward to more stories by Adam Light
Greg Everett is one disorganized guy...And he's having a VERY bad day. He wakes up late, can't find clean socks much less his other shoe. He's late to work and really needs some caffeine.
"Gone" drew me in from the first paragraph and kept me engrossed to the last word. Spare, succinct prose. Great character development. Eerie twists and turns. I'm not usually a short story fan but I'm enjoying both Light brothers.
Not being a huge fan of short stories I actually really enjoyed this! I liked the "ordinariness" of the style, which added to the "weirdness" if that makes any sense! I think if it had of been all moody, and tense, it would have spoilt where the actual story was going.
3 1/2 stars Great writing. Interesting story even though you know what's going on fairly quickly, it's written in a way where you get a feel of how the character is feeling as he figures it out, too. Super fast read.
I enjoyed this short story that had a nice little twist at the ending! Greg's day started off wrong and things only got weirder as it went on. This was my first book by the author and I look forward to more!
Cool little short story that reminded me of the old Twilight Zone episodes. It would have translated well to the screen and for some strange reason would have to have been in black in white. I don't know why, but that was how I pictured it.
This story grabbed me from the start and I simply had to finish it in one sitting. The story unfolded nicely with some really bizarre events. I started to figure out what was happening near the end, but by this point had already overlooked a number of subtle clues Mr Light had left along the way. The end was impressive and there was a real 'Ah, of course', moment when the pieces all clicked into place. A very subtle and moving story that I will read again and again. **Spoiler alert** The part with the envelope I found particularly poignant. This is my favourite of Adam's work so far
This had some interesting parts and it made me a smile a few times in the beginning during Greg's morning routine.
Although I saw the twist coming early on, I think that's to be expected due to the shortness of the story.
I think certain characters should have been fleshed out a little more as their connection to Greg seemed a little rushed. Again this is a product of the length.
Overall I see promise in your writing, but feel I can only give this one two stars.
Another Kindle Freebie / Short Story that I picked up and read on the fly. The writing was descriptive and imaginative, and tied you to the main character in a good way. I agree with the statements that this feels like it could be and episode of Twilight Zone or an Outer Limits type of program. The story was overly predictible, but was well written enough that I didn't mind continuing to read.
I really enjoyed this short story. It even made me laugh. It definitely reminded me of L. Ron Hubbard's Fear because like James Lowry, Greg seems to be missing time. In the end, you kinda figure out what's going on, but I felt like I was a little confused at what happened to his family. May have to reread. Other than that, it definitely had me going and can't wait to read more from Adam Light.
Interesting short little story! I agree with other reviewers that it would make an excellent Twilight Zone episode! I was able to figure out what was going on, so I did find it was a bit predictable. Overall, a well written piece, rather creepy! I did get this when it was free on Amazon. Recommended!
I remember writing something myself similar to this when I was in school (although of course Adam flourished it up much better than I did), so the concept was already somewhat of a curiosity for me. I enjoyed reading it, and will continue to read more by him!
Good story. It was fast-paced and I couldn't put it down. My only complaint (which is probably an error on my part) is that it was easy to get confused on what was happening. This didn't take anything away from my enjoyment of the book though.
