സാറാ തോമസിൻറെ ആദ്യം മനസ്സിനെ സ്പർശിച്ച നോവൽ ഗ്രഹണം ആണ്. അതിനുശേഷമാണു നാർമടിപുടവ വായിച്ചത്. വല്ലാത്തൊരു ആകർഷണം ഉണ്ട്. കനകാംബാൾ ഒരിക്കലും മറ്റാരോ ആയി എനിക്ക് തോന്നിയില്ല. അവർ നമ്മൾ കണ്ട, അല്ലെങ്കിൽ കണ്ടുകൊണ്ടിരിക്കുന്ന ആരോ ആണ്. പാലക്കാടൻ അഗ്രഹാരത്തിനടുത്താണ് എന്റെ വീട്, അതുപോലെ തിരുവനന്തപുരത്താണ് ഞാൻ പഠിച്ചതും. എല്ലാം കൊണ്ടും കഥയിലെ സ്ഥലങ്ങളും കഥാപാത്രങ്ങങ്ങളും സുപരിചിതമാണ്. എല്ലാറ്റിനുമുപരി കനകാംബാളിന്റെ ജീവിതം ഒരിക്കലും ശൂന്യമാകുന്നില്ല, അവരുടെ മനസ്സിലെ നന്മ പോലെ ആ നോവലിനതീതമായി അവർ ജീവിക്കുന്നു, അത് വായിച്ച വ്യക്തികളുടെ മനസ്സിൽ.

Why should a woman’s life come to a standstill simply because her husband is no longer alive?! It is so absurd!Reading this book, I couldn’t help but reflect on how much has changed since then. In 2025, I sincerely hope these cruel customs have faded into the past. No woman should be forced into isolation, denied her right to happiness, or burdened with unnecessary restrictions. She must live, love, and pursue her life, regardless of what society dictates.

It is really suffocating to think about the life this Brahmin widow had to lead even at her young age. The struggles she had been through to fall prey to the beliefs society has put on her considering them as her own make us feel her helplessness.
The story is both inspiring and depressing. It gives hope to the change in the world for a woman ready to meddle with the meaningless rules orthodox society and religion have put on her.

The novelist has written the story of Kanakam who was forced to sacrifice all the joys of her life due to the customs and rituals of her Brahmin community forced on her. She is not even able to break all these chains and accept an opportunity when it arises. Novelist has written the story without any pretentious style in a straight forward way but easily accessible for the reader. Maybe the author opted to be similar to the plain life style (even white clothes) forced on the main character by the society.

It talks about the tyranny of faith. Here a woman is tortured mentally and emotionally just because she is born to a certain cast. As she is a woman she is supposed to follow stifling rules to upheld the purity of her sect and the narrative shows how it breaks her. Good stuff and it has to be read by all those who believe in all the religious nonsense that's spewed everyday.
