Build profits even in the worst of times with the methods of a Technical Analysis legend “ Deemer on Technical Analysis will become an instant investment book classic.” ―Douglas A. Kass, Seabreeze Partners Management, Inc. “Serving on the front lines of this investment discipline for the past 40 years with some of the most influential investors of our time, Deemer provides a front-row seat on some fascinating history, rich with insights and anecdotes and, of course, loaded with wisdom. His true gift is making the arcane world of technical analysis accessible and relevant to all investors. If Warren Buffett is the Oracle of Omaha, Deemer is the Prophet of Port St. Lucie.” ―Sandra Ward, Senior Editor, Barron’s “I have had the great pleasure of working with and getting to know some of the greatest technical analysts throughout the past 50 years. Walt Deemer is widely recognized as one of the best. His charm and wit in explaining the keys to successful investing will make [this] book a must-read and an all-time classic for first-time investors and professionals alike.” ―Paul Desmond, Lowry Research “Every investor can learn something from Walter Deemer.” ―David Fuller, Global Strategist, Fullermoney.com Today’s volatile markets are challenging for professional and retail investors alike. Just in time, Walter Deemer, a cornerstone of technical analysis for nearly 50 years, has culled his insight and knowledge to show investors how to achieve steady investment gains in the current markets. With the stock market expected to trade generally sideways for many years, a buy-and-hold strategy may not give you the returns you need on your investments. In Deemer on Technical Analysis , Walter distills his decades spent on the front lines of the financial markets into a useful strategy that shows you how to time the markets to successfully grow wealth. The key is solid technical analysis. Inside, you will learn the nuts and bolts of charting, identifying indicators, recognizing trends, and selecting the best stocks for your goals. This step-by-step guide shows you how
Don't be misled about the title, the author does not go into detailed technical analysis but only gives a sneak peak. However, I liked that he kept quoting Robert Farrell: “History does not repeat itself exactly, but behavior does.” And this ties very nicely to what I've learned about technical analysis so far: all traders look at the same price charts and expect the same outcome based on previous experience (e.g., if a price level held as a key support or resistance in the past, traders will keep an eye out for it and base their trades around that historical price level). Technical analysts look for similar patterns that have formed in the past, and will form trade ideas believing that price will act the same way that it did before. Thus, price patterns and indicator signals tend to become self-fulfilling. Once understood this way, stock trading is no longer something to fear (not that much, anyway).
This is a great book mostly because it's very recent and still relevant to today's market. This isn't your traditional technical analysis intro book but rather deep insights into Deemer's experience as a technical analyst over his career. The best use of this book is to use it as a supplement material. This book by itself won't make you a great investor / trader.
Pros: Well Organized Covers numerous topics Very relevant
Cons: Multiple filler chapters irrelevant to technical analysis Never goes deep into each topic (few examples) Publishing errors (Referenced 2009 instead of 1999)
