Inspired by real events, the Lady of Lake Como follows the story of a lieutenant with the Italian Police who, during the height of World War II, is tasked with investigating the unsettling disappearance of two women from his small town. Complicating matters, Ezio receives a detestable order from his superiors to arrest a Jewish man simply for the accident of his birth. While enroute to carry out his unbearable duty, Ezio has a crisis of conscience when he encounters a nun whose secret forever changes his heart.
Finally, a serious and arresting story of a fight not just for the war going on in Italy as it was also encompassing the rest of Europe, but for the morality which must be in the minds of all those who fought for what is true freedom. I couldn’t stop reading about the war in Italy through what happened to one man in real and terrifying experience. Stay with - you won’t be able to put it down. And, the writing is magnificent.
This was a compelling read and not what I expected. The main character’s continual examination of conscience leads him to make decisions that challenge his moral code. There are a few storied going on at one time but they are intertwined. The one story that seemed the most incredulous in the one that is most closely related to true events. The events of the war as well as the backstory of Ezio’s crippled leg, bring out some of the worst and best in multiple characters of the story. If you like World War II historical fiction like me, you might enjoy this reading.
I felt it to be well written. The characters were well developed. There was a feeling of Anxiety that I appreciated. I would highly recommend this book.
A strange but interesting and somewhat amusing look at the end of Mussolini & Fascism in Italy
I almost DNF but stuck with it and was more engaged with an intriguing character who placed honor and integrity over hate in the last days of Mussolini’s grip on Italy.
Very disappointed in the plot twist in Chapter 23. Undermined my feeling about the book in general. Other than that, it was an interesting story and informative read about Italy during that era in history.
I learned more about Italy during Mussolini's reign. The story had a lot of action within it and sad elements. In some ways it was a little too much with the additional characters and their impact to the story because certain storylines were never fully developed. Overall I liked it.
A little bit of everything: Nazis, Fascists, Communists, Freedom Fighters. Throw in a dash of the bizarre. A good story, but a bit melodramatic. One crisis leads to another to another to another.
WWII northern Italy - See how the people of northern Italy deal with living under Mussolini as the Allies invade the county and the Nazi come into the county from the north.
