3.5 stars Not only did I learn a lot and enjoy reading this book... it has continued to fuel my rock hounding craze! Even better, it spurred me to visit the C&M Rock Shop in Honor, Michigan, where the author, Bruce Mueller, and his wife Shirley, own and run the store there. I even had one of my Petoskey stones polished there yesterday!!! Can't wait to go back!!! And maybe I will buy the guides for the other great lakes. I hope to do a Pictured Rock trip this summer!!!
nice addition to my knowledge of Great Lake's geology, specifically rocks found along its shores. author's comments about where to go to find specific rocks around Lake Michigan was not really helpful at all. photos were good. geologic history was basic and sufficient for a beginner. descriptions of the more common rocks found was helpful.
This book was amazing for nerds like me who collect thirty new rocks every summer. On vacation it helped me find petoskey stones! (hexagonal shaped fossils of 600 million year old coral). It also helped me identify some rocks/fossils I had already found b/c there are fossils EVERYWHERE in lake Michigan
Nice reference book. Good tips for finding petoskey stones (I came home with about 20)! This book has me convinced that I need to make a trip to the Upper Peninsula next.
