An accessible guide to controlling the mind. Written in a simple and easily understandable style, Concentration is a classic among books on the art of meditation. Without the ability to concentrate, our efforts at meditation will result only in going nowhere, in spinning our wheels in an unending rut. Through a series of practical steps, the author provides the frame work of achieving the state of Samadhi. It encourages readers to actively walk the path of spirituality and achieve a state of super consciousness, rather than just passively read about it.
Mouni Sadhu was the pen name of Mieczyslaw Demetriusz Sudowski, a Polish-born author of spiritual, mystical, and esoteric subjects. He lived in Poland until World War II and eventually settled in Australia. He primarily wrote about Western and Eastern spirituality, as well as occultism, Hermeticism, and the Yoga traditions of India. His greatest personal influence was Ramana Maharshi. The name "Mouni Sadhu" means "silent monk" in Sanskrit.
His literary estate was left to the Australian Society of Authors, of which he was a member.
This is one of my favorite books. Any time you spend reading from this book and doing the exercises is time well spent. The more attention you pay to the exercises, the better your results; but even a few minutes a day is much better than nothing. This book will test your will power but what you gain is worth the work you put in to it.
This is the best beginner's book for meditation. If you are Hindu or interested in Hinduism then I would suggest "Meditation And Spiritual Life by Swami Yatiswarananda" as the next book.
Wildly misguided book that starts out by introducing a practice that "proves" that you have psychokinetic powers. (Of course any failure is just you failing to concentrate) You also get an idea of the "intellectual" heritage of this book when it praises the famous fraud and charlatan Madame Blavatsky. It does not get better from there. I rate it's credibility at absolute Zero. I could stomach less than 100 pages before giving up even though I was reading it so I could comment on it for an acquaintance that unfortunately has taken some of the book's deluded teachings to heart.
Thankfully it is out of print and there is little risk of most people who are not already committed to believing in this specific flavor of snake oil being exposed to it.
Fantastic book for practicing concentration. This is a very challenging book but it would be highly worth it for those who can follow through with his intense requisites.
Concentration is one of the most important skills to cultivate throughout ones life and this book gives on a. primer on how to cultivate it so one can go on to work on more serious attainments. this is the foundation for getting those other attainments, as if you cannot concentrate, how can you attain Samadhi or any Dhyanas?
Aside from powerful exercises to improve one's concentration it also contains some of the best spiritual utterances on "esoteric" subject that I have read in recent times. As discrimination and depth arise in one so will one be led to words and ideas that meet that level and help deepen the awareness of one's own "mystery".
