THE CLAYBORNES ARE BACK! AND LOVE IS IN BLOOM! — First introduced in Julie Garwood's magnificent New York Times bestseller For the Roses, which inspired the Hallmark Hall of Fame television film Rose Hill, the Clayborne brothers of Blue Belle, Montana, have been embraced by millions worldwide. Now Julie Garwood spins the individual stories of these three spirited brothers -- once a mismatched gang of street urchins -- in a trio of special novels that begins with One Pink Rose.

Travis Clayborne may be the youngest of the Clayborne brothers, but he's most definitely his own man. Unless it means saying no to his beloved Mama Rose. And that's why Travis is escorting young Bostonian Emily Finnegan to Golden Crest, Montana -- where she'll discover what awaits her as a mail-order bride. Emily has made it perfectly clear that she's taken charge of her destiny and nothing is going to interfere. Falling in love with the perfect stranger isn't part of her plan, but the journey with Travis across this beautiful, rugged land opens her eyes... and her heart. Perhaps her destiny isn't exactly as she imagined.

A nice continuation of the Claybourne family! Travis escorts Emily to her mailorder groom. A humorous adventure that, of course, ends in love.

So, a pretty good novella!

One Pink Rose is a fun, lighthearted, clean Western romance that reads from the pages of today. With all of the elements that we look for in a romance, this author was able to capture and delight us perfectly.

First introduced in the widely read book, For the Roses, Julie Garwood has introduced us to a family of brothers that you are going to fall for! This book has that a timeless feel to it even though it is set in the 1800’s.

With loads of wit and humor plus characters that you’ll fall in love with, One Pink Rose is a terrific read that is perfect for young adults and adults of any age. Although this is a short read, it is packed full of entertainment that will leave you smiling, swooning, and begging for the next edition in the series. Luckily we don’t have to wait for long!

This author knows how to engage her readers and leave them wanting more. A beautiful read that gives us everything we love in a hot romance – a yummy man, a strong and spunky female, and a sweet happy ever after that we look forward to reading more about in future publications!

Definitely one to grab!

This too-brief telling of Travis’ love story was a lot of fun, but the ending felt rushed. I would have liked to spend more time with the delightfully un-helpless Emily and I wish Travis didn’t feel so generically Clayborne. He deserved a more complete characterization.

As an appetizer, though, here’s a little snippet of conversation occurring after Emily tells Travis that she’s turning over a new leaf and intends to become helpless and coy:

”You won’t ever be able to keep up the charade of being a delicate little flower in need of pampering, Emily.”

“I am delicate, damn it.”

He snorted with disbelief. “You’re about as fragile as a grizzly bear.”

'One Pink Rose'  is the first book I've read by Julie Garwood, and while I am not a huge fan of historical romance, I found I quickly became a fan of Ms. Garwood's writing style.

'One Pink Rose' takes us back in time when the West was being won, stage coaches were being robbed and "bad guys" rode into town and frightened tavern and business owners alike.

Emily is in need of an escort to take her the rest of her journey to meet her soon-to-be husband. They've only corresponded, she's never met him. She doesn't care about love, she just wanted to be married and taken care of. She learned early on, love doesn't matter.

Travis has been assigned to Emily's safety. He thinks she's crazy (in more ways than one) that she isn't marrying for love. He thinks she has a brilliant mind and is a beautiful woman and doesn't understand why she would not marry for love. But Travis can't be a hypocrite because he has acknowledged he isn't the marrying type.

Along the way, the two face troubles (as is the way with the West) and begin to question the feelings that are bubbling under the surface.
❝I'll try not to bother you.❞

❝I'm already bothered, Emily, and from the way you're looking at me, I'd say you're real bothered too.❞

'One Pink Rose' was a short, quick read, filled with sweet moments that will have you laughing and leave you with a smile on your face.

3.5 sweet stars.

A nice, sweet story. Quite short. I liked both characters. She was feisty and knew her mind ... well, until she met Travis. Then she felt a little bit out of her league.

Emily made him smile, but only because she said the craziest things.

This is book two in the "Claybornes' Brides (Rose Hill) "series. I just love Julie Garwood's books! They are usually the best, with a great story. This one too was really good book. With that said, I haven't yet read the first book "For the Roses" but now really want to since this book seem to be a continuation of the first. Although I didn't really see a problem with not reading the first...only that I loved this one so much I want to read more this series.
Emily Finnegan is going to Golden Crest, Montana as a mail order bride. Emily feels that she is taking charge of her life and this is the step to take. Travis Clayborne 'Mother" talks him into escorting Emily to her destination and to her possibly new husband. This starts their wonderful romance! Loved having the change to read this book!.

4 If It Ain't Broke, No Need To Fix Stars
* * * * Spoiler Free
There has always been this trend of taking something which worked just fine and then "improving it"...You know what I am talking about... countless products or companies trying to create a need where there is none by calling a household staple... New and Improved...

Ridiculous...because when there is a classic... something that feels just right, repeatedly... there is no need to change a thing...And thankfully, from what I can tell, One Pink Rose by Julie Garwood has stayed exactly intact from its first publishing. Ms. Garwood is one of the greats... so there is never a reason to mess with her work.

It is 1880 and we meet the Clayborne brothers and their mother Mama Rose. We are in Montana and these men have the reputation of being upstanding and true...also one does not mess with them if they know what's good.

Travis Clayborne, the youngest has a bone to pick... he is planning on righting a wrong that was done to his mother on her way out here. It seems a man was "charming" and somehow stole the compass she was bring to one of her sons. Travis has decided to hunt him down and give him some Montana justice. His mother has given him another task, though... He is to escort a young Bostonian Emily Finnegan to Golden Crest to meet her soon to be mail order husband. Travis can't turn his mother down... so he will do this and then go hunting for the thief.

Emily Finnegan is everything an East Coast Bostonian woman would look like... refined, dressed in her finest and standing with much too many suitcases to make the journey they will be taking. She is standing so straight and still, when Travis taps her on the shoulder, Emily immediately goes to defend herself...Not a great way to start off a long ride together.

To give you anymore would really spoil this little gem for you. Emily is feisty, very quick witted and capable. She is also determined to change who she is... and thinks this adventure will be her chance. Travis sees a woman at first who seems silly and a bit off but learns quickly there is so much more to her than first impressions. Both characters are very real in the moments and Garwood does not skimp on strong secondary characters which move the story along.

With the way of the world and how we all wish to love and be loved...somethings really do stay the same, even when they say they are new and improved...For all of those relationships from long ago started by the written word...namely mail order brides...That may be a thing of the past... or is it... with just another name and way to deliver those words...

The Clayborne Brides Series are heartwarming re-issued stories about four orphan boys and the baby girl they found and raised need to be read in order. I absolutely love them. They tell the tale of how the boys and an abandoned baby become a family in the Montana Territory and grow to be men. All the boys became wonderful, strong, Julie Garwood men. One Pink Rose is the story of Travis Clayborne and Emily Finnegan.

Travis is the youngest brother and Mama Rose has asked him to escort Emily Finnegan, a Boston mail order bride, on the last leg of her journey to her fiancé. Travis has other business he would rather attend to but no one says no to Mama Rose. Emily turns out to be a surprise to Travis. She is strong-willed, intelligent and beautiful. Why she would want to marry a stranger is beyond Travis.

Emily is running away from Boston after being left at the alter by a fiancé who married her sister instead. She wants to be a soft, dependent, Southern Belle type. She's not, but she is convinced that those women get all the attention. But Travis is very attracted to the woman she is, not the one she wants to be. And, that's a good thing because it's the woman she is that saves Travis's life.

****ARC provided by Gallery, Threshold, Pocket Books via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.****

I think I read the first book to this series a while ago so I can't really remember what happened in that book, but I don't think I really needed to do a reread of that book in order to understand this book.

This was a really cute story, though it was pretty short and I don't think that the characters were able to be given more depth of character that Julie Garwood would've done if the story were longer. But we get a little sense of what those their characters are supposed to be, though there are some conflict which would've been nice to be further explained if the story were longer.

We find ourselves with Travis, the youngest Clayborne. If I remember correctly I don't think the Clayborne brothers are actually related by blood, but are related by childhood experiences and brotherhood. Travis is the youngest and I believe the smart one who plans on becoming a lawyer (I think I read this from other reviews) from a brief mention of him dropping off a letter of intent to apprentice at a law firm. He goes at his Mama Rose's behest to escort Emily Finnegan to meet her intended husband (whom she's never set her eyes on, but she has received poems from her intended). She tries to appear to be a helpless woman when in fact she is pretty independent and knows her own mind. But this is where conflicting parts of her character clash. She tries to appear weak when she is in fact strong, but after she tangles with some drunken men from a gang she exhibits a little of the weak character by being frightened. This may be explained as post stress, but at the time of my reading it just seemed kinda conflicting.

One part of the story that I wish were explained was

I really liked the story despite the few issues I had with the book probably because I thought the dialogue was very witty and the humor that Julie Garwood had in her novel length historicals (I'm not a fan of her contemporary suspense books) also appeared in this sweet short western story.

★★★★☆ Pure fluff and fun. I probably shouldn't rate this one so high, but I love a good “mail-order bride” or a “fish-out-of-water” story and this one was both. Sure, it was predicable and a bit dated, but still cute. It was short, too! Just what I needed right now.

Travis, one of the Clayborne brothers that rescued - and raised - a baby in book #1 For the Roses, gets his turn at a HEA with Emily Finnegan, a Bostonian who has given up on love. Nevertheless, fate steps in and deals her an escort that takes her breath away, with kisses. She is filled with rightous indignation that Travis would assume she would want his kisses, when she is promised to another. Her indignation gets her into hot water a couple times:
“I should have tried to placate them, but they made me so angry. One of them called me a heifer.”

A hint of a smile crossed his face. “A heifer?”

“That’s what did it all right,” Millie interjected. “She got that mean look in her eyes right after that one named Carter called her a ‘pretty little heifer.’”

Emily straightened her shoulders. “No woman likes to be called a cow,” she announced in her haughtiest voice.

Travis and Jon both tried to hide their grins. Millie shook her head. “I think he was complimenting you in his own vile way. He didn’t call you a cow, Emily. He called you a pretty heifer,” she reminded her.

“Correct me if I’m wrong, but aren’t they the same thing? Travis, I don’t believe I’ve said anything amusing. Why are you smiling?”

“Your indignation,” he replied.
She’s pretty feisty; when they get backed into a corner, Emily doesn’t desert Travis. Since he isn’t too keen to turn Emily over into the hands of another man, and it is his kisses that will make her decide otherwise, then he’ll provide them.

Julie Garwood is always an enjoyable read. This was no exception. Even though this was published nearly 10 years ago, I somehow missed this one. I enjoyed it. Anyone familiar with Garwood is familiar with the Montgomery family...and I am afraid of spoiling other books with going into detail on this one...so I am going to leave this by saying it was as enjoyable as her other books...you really can't go wring in picking up a book by Julie Garwood.

I have read quite a few of Julie Garwood's medieval and Scottish historical romances, and loved all of them. I don't read a lot of American historical romance, so I decided to try out this series set in 19th Century Montana.

Travis Clayborne is a headstrong old west cowboy who is not afraid to take the law into his own hands. He is also quite the mama's boy, willing to carry out her bidding and right wrongs done to her. As a favor to his beloved mama, Travis has agreed to escort a Boston flibbertigibbet to her destination in Golden Crest, Montana... and if he can find a no good scoundrel along the way, all the better for his plans.

Emily Finnegan is the flibbertigibbet, a mail order bridge traveling from Boston to Montana to meet her future husband. Emily is a bit of a headcase after being abandoned at the altar, and now she has decided that being honest and forthright is a bad thing. Her ideas about changing herself were a bit crazy, and Travis was quick to call her on them, even when they were entertaining him to no end.

The romance was pretty low key, and this book seemed a little more about the comedy. The secondary characters were uneducated simpletons with over-the-top nutty personalities. Even though the hero and heroine were well-read and more educated than most, the conversations that happened on-page were unsophisticated and goofy. The writing style in this book was not what I am used to from Julie Garwood. It seemed overly simple and somewhat slapstick. It was funny at times, but I don't think I could have tolerated it for a longer book. I much prefer some of her beautiful prose and complex stories like Ransom, Honor's Splendour, and The Prize. I have noticed this hokey writing style in other westerns that I have read, so I think this genre is not for me.

I received an advanced copy of the re-release version of this book from the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. 3 stars / 1 flame. Full review posted at Bambi Unbridled.

Good clean fun…

If you are looking for a quick, fun and flirty read, then you have found the right book! I love Julie Garwood’s writing no matter the time period or the place. She manages to hit the right notes each and every time, and this note was hilarious and sweet…

“I am delicate, damn it.”
He snorted with disbelief. “You’re about as fragile as a grizzly bear.”

Travis Clayborne is running an errand for Mama Rose, someone he could never say no to. On an errand of his own, Emily Finnegan was supposed to be a mild, and easily sorted out, distraction. What she turned out to be was a real challenge to him, and his heart.

In the wilds of Montana, Emily hoped to have a fresh start as a mail-order bride. She realized she needed to change herself, become more like the women in Boston—less serious and definitely flirtier. Her fiancé was well-spoken and wrote the most articulate and lovely letters, she couldn’t wait to meet to him, introduce him to the “new” her!

Rubbing each other the wrong way from their first meeting, each conversation, each scene is rife with humor and sarcasm as well as the undercurrent of desire. The banter between them is sweet and sassy as Emily tries to convince Travis the new “her” is better than the old. Travis doesn’t know what to make of her really, and he certainly isn’t like any Bostonian Emily has ever met. How she tries to convince him is hilarious, even as the underlying theme of self-esteem and self-identity played out. The meeting of east and west has never been more fun. With the dangers of the Wild West adding the right amount of spice, this story read way too quickly. I wish it had been longer! ~ Diane, 4 stars

There was a period of time when I was very into period romances, and Julie Garwood is undoubtedly the queen of the genre. A frequent New York Times bestselling author, she followed up her novel For the Roses with a set of three novellas (now packaged as The Clayborne Brides) which followed three of the Clayborne brothers introduced in For the Roses as they found wives. The first released was One Pink Rose, which followed the youngest brother, Travis Clayborne.

::: Always Listen to Your Mama :::

In For the Roses, Garwood's readers were introduced to the unconventional Clayborne family, living in Montana in the Frontier days. The brothers, Travis, Adam, Cole, and Douglas, all met on the streets of New York as boys, homeless and orphaned in one way or another. Adam was the only boy with any parent to speak of: his mother, who had sent him on the Underground Railroad to free him from slavery. The only parental guidance the boys had was from letters from Adam's mother, Mama Rose, and when they found an abandoned baby girl, they named her Rose after Mama Rose, and struck out for the West to give the baby a better life.

Travis, the youngest of the boys, started out his life on the streets as a con artist. One Pink Rose picks up the story after the men have been reunited with Mama Rose, and Rose has gotten married. Mama Rose meets a mail-order bride, Emily Finnegan, who is in need of an escort to take her to the man she is supposed to marry. Mama Rose volunteers Travis for this task, and he reluctantly agrees. As most of these type of stories go, Travis immediately regrets his assent (as does the reader) and determines that Emily is a bubblehead who hasn't through through her decision, but rather, jumped into the arranged marriage too hastily after an unfortunate jilting.

Predictably, Travis and Emily fall for each other as Travis escorts Emily to her fate, and I'm sure it's not spoiling any ending to tell the reader that they ride off into the sunset together after some setbacks.

::: And There Are Two More? :::

One Pink Rose offers nothing more than formulaic romance novel, and the novella length makes it even worse. Everything feels rushed with little to no character development. If you haven't read For the Roses, it's nearly impossible to get any sense of Travis' character, much less why he would take on this task for his mother.

Even worse, the character of Emily is every bit as bubble-headed as Travis believes her to be. She takes off on this journey to marry a man she's never even seen a picture of (which, admittedly, was probably typical for the time), but also takes his word that he lives in a large house and has money. Relating it to today's day and age, it's almost like someone believing anything someone tells them online, then running off to marry them without verifying any of the facts. Of COURSE Travis has to step in and be Emily's hero, because not only is she naive and impulsive, but she's also flighty.

I found it so hard to believe that Travis' character could fall in love with this ditz, that I found myself groaning and cringing repeatedly as I read it, not a good sign when a book is only 150 pages long. If you are able to completely check out when reading a book, and are looking for something that is short, sweet, and can be read while only paying attention halfway, this might be the book for you, but otherwise, it's a huge dud, and can be skipped, even for ardent fans of For the Roses.

From The Cover:

Part one of Julie Garwood's trilogy, The Clayborne Brides, takes on a timeworn scenario: Travis Clayborne, a no-nonsense cowboy escorts a mail-order bride across Montana as a favor to his mother. The bride, Emily Finnegan, is a pedantic Boston screwball who initiates their relationship by shooting at him. She misses, and things go downhill from there. As the pair proceeds toward Emily's rendezvous with matrimony, the sparks--romantic and otherwise--fly. There are the inevitable bumps along the way, and few surprises, so don't expect any. One Pink Rose is like silk: smooth, lightweight, and an indulgent pleasure. The other Clayborne brothers, first introduced as a gang of New York City street urchins in Garwood's bestselling For the Roses, meet their matches in One White Rose and One Red Rose.

My Review:

One Pink Rose is a cute, charming, funny novella. It's a quick, easy read. At only 146 pages, this one is a great way to pass a rainy day, or sitting on the beach... you get the idea.

I love Julie Garwood's historicals and while For The Roses is actually the first book in the Rose/Clayborne Brides series, we are finally getting a chance to see what happens to the brothers.

First up is Travis, the future lawyer. He's smart, witty and of course, knows what is best for everyone, including Emily Finnegan who he is supposed to escort to her "mail order" husband.

There's nothing deep or thought provoking here. It's just a fun way to spend a day.

Why 3 stars? This book was missing one thing that I was really hoping for. Page time for Mama Rose. She was mentioned in this story, but for goodness sake! I've waited 19 years (figuritively speaking) to get to know her, and I was disappointed that there wasn't even a single word from her.

One Pink Rose by Julie Garwood is an extremely fast and enjoyable read. This book doesn't beat around the bush much. It's simple, thus I simply loved it.

If you missed For the Roses, the first book which brought us the four lovable Clayborne brothers, I must warn you that the Clayborne family is a weird lot. Growing up in New York, they stole for a living, until a little baby was delivered to them, then the lives of the boys changed drastically. For the baby girl, which they named Mary Rose, they wanted to change their dirty ways and live clean. They ended up building a family, connected not by blood but by love.

One Pink Rose is about Travis Clayborne, the sharpshooter/fast hand of the family. He aspires to be a lawyer, but wouldn't be willing to follow the law if his family was in any way mistreated.

Because of Mama Rose, Travis rushes off to aid Ms. Emily Finnegan, a mail-order bride, to reach the groom's abode. However, Emily tries to shoot Travis, and thank God, Travis was fast to evade, or else, he might have died and I would have ripped this book into taters.

With a bullet, the attraction budded and blossomed. Travis would have never fallen in love with Emily if she hadn't fired that shot.

And through another bullet, as it pierced Travis' back, Emily would have not realized that she had fallen hard for her escort.

And if not for the last bullet this book fired, Travis would have not stopped Emily and Emily would have ended up in Boston and Travis wouldn't have been able to propose.

This review maybe full of bullets, but this book is far from violent.

The blossoming love of Travis and Emily did not develop as fast as a bullet, but I felt that I've read this book as fast as that.

And the book sure blossomed into a really pretty pink rose to me ♥
