Fandom: Twilight Series - Stephenie Meyer Relationship: Edward Cullen/Bella Swan -------------------------------------------------- Edward and Bella have dark pasts that leave them severely emotionally scarred, with nightmares that force them to stay awake. They meet and begin to form a bond during the night hours.
Although this work cannot be found in a bookstore, I can easily say it is one of the best things I have ever read. I highly suggest you track it down on the internet because it will change your life like all good literature does. It has been several years since I read Wide Awake for the first time on fanfiction.com. Yep, that's right, this 52 chapter story started off as a fanfic about the popular novel Twilight. However, aside from the names of the characters, nothing about this story is the same. I have often said that if AngstGoddess would just change some of their names then she could publish this story in a heartbeat. I would go as far as to even say I like this story better than the Twilight Saga (no offense intended to Stephenie Meyer). The author does a terrific job of capturing the emotions and psychological trauma that these characters face. Edward is quite hilarious and his language is amazingly naughty. The relationship between Bella and Edward is heartbreakingly honest. Again, I believe I prefer this Edward to Meyer's Edward. There is some heavy language and some adult scenes in this work but all that aside, I would suggest that everyone who can get their hands on it should read it. The storyline is creative and holds so much depth that you will want nothing more than to read it over and over again! BRAVO!
I don't know how did I land up here. and still bigger concern - how did I decide to give it a go? I even couldn't stand Steph's own re-writing of Twilight by switching genders, I simply can't read this.
I'm a huge of Twilight and lost count of times I read it. Despite of some of my GR friends' dismay I'm not ashamed of reading and loving it! I like it - suck it up! or unfriend me - see if I care.
That being said, I can't stand reading fanfiction of Twilight. I just can't.
Sorry but can't visualize Bella cussing and smoking cigarettes! As I didn't continue after merely reading 1%, I'm not rating this stuff.
Wow...I still can't say enough how amazing this story is. It really could be two books because of the length, but man, oh man, did it keep me "wide awake" several nights reading. The author should have a book deal for this over the ridiculous 50 Shades one! With its trailer receiving over 4K hits, there being forums for people having withdrawls after reading, fanmade trailers and gifs, it's obvious this story resonates with people.
Love this bc it captures Bella's cookie making, which is how all the chapters are titled!
And of course, unicorns stand for something else I won't spoil!!!
The story is so much deeper than I could ever imagine a fanfiction being. Yes, this is Twilight fanfic, but in name only. If you took out the character names, there would be nothing to tie this to Twilight--instead there is a much more amazing story of love and the human condition. Although it deals with really dark themes, there is such humor, hope, and love that it just blows you away.
A little background...Bella Swan comes to Forks because her mother was murdered by a crazy exboyfriend who tortured the pair for over a month. Bella was kept in the closet for most of the time. She is broken now by her experience. She cannot stand the touch of a man or to be in close proximity of one, and if one touches or gets to close, she has a traumatic episode. Her PTSD includes not being able to sleep for the horrific nightmares she endures.
Her mother's sister is Esme, and she and her daughter, Alice, live next door to Dr. Cullen and his adopted sons Emmett and Edward. Oh, the Wide Awake version of Edward is AMAZING!! He's haunted by a dark childhood and the fire that left his father dead and himself physically and emotionally scarred. He also cannot sleep and survives on catnaps.
The two meet at a party thrown at Dr. Cullen's. The reclusive Edward is sketching in his bedroom while the party goes on downstairs. After Bella escapes from the overbearing Mike Newton into Edward's room, the two strike up an odd friendship or bond over their shared dark experiences. They start meeting in the gazebo on the Cullen property to talk. Soon they find that when they are together they can sleep in peace without nightmares.
Then is when the romance begins...and OMG, swaoon!!! The chemistry is so real and how they react to each other is both sad, funny, and romantic. And the other characters are very well drawn, different, and their interactions are awesome.
Do yourself a favor and read it...all you have to do is google Wide Awake fanfiction. There are two versions--one with slightly less swearing and naughty bits!
Disclaimer: I am reviewing Twilight fanfiction in this post (it will not be a regular thing, so if you don't like it, please don't click unfollow!). Yes, that makes me a nerd. Yes, I am okay if you don't read this :)
This is also rated M, and for a good reason (the story not my review.)
You can read the story here scroll down and there are chapter links on left hand side or read first chapter here, or get pdf here
So, up front- who has read it? Anyone? What are your favorite fanfics if you read them? Just for Twilight or for other books too (I am mostly Twilight but have read a few Vamp Academy)
As for the cover, it fits so much because Bella in fanfic likes to bake and she makes cookies every night and then gives them names based on something in her day.
Okay, so I haven't been able to get this out of my mind the last few days. It is ultimate proof that I have a huge soft spot for bad boys with a tender side. This transforms the Edward and Bella that I love into something darker, more complex. I am draw to people with issues, watching how love can heal and their journey to healing, and this fanfic has it all. I guess that it says something that I have a stack of books to review and all I can think about is this story! Okay, so I have said what I needed to, and talked about it a bit, now I am back to the regularly scheduled program. Their characters are really deeply sculpted. Yes, I know its based on Twilight, but Bella and Edward only share a few characteristics of the ones in the book. We have their connection and their pasts, but in this, Bella is traumatized because in this story Phil was an exboyfriend of her mom's but held a two week long home invasion where Bella heard her mom being tortured and eventually killed and she experienced physical and emotional abuse. As a result, she can't be touched, especially by men, or she has severe flashbacks and ends up screaming, shaking, and out of it. Edward was in a housefire and watched his dad pass away. After, his mom gave him up to the state. He is crude--he has the filthiest language and most people don't think there is a sensitive man with a lot to offer.
What initially draws them together is that they both can't sleep and go through extreme measures to keep themselves awake. They have debilitating nightmares and will do lots of things to avoid sleep. They meet at the gazebo at midnight, and begin to talk, and eventually Bella realizes that Edward can touch her without her flashbacks.
This story is hot! It contains a lot of steamy moments between the two but it follows a deep emotional connection. They share their nightmares and pasts and feel like its okay because when one shares or shows, so does the other. Tit for tat as they call it.
They create this dependancy because they discover they can get a full night sleep in the other's arms. So Bella sneaks out every night, and into Edwards room. (In this story Esme is Bella's aunt who has taken her in. Carlisle is a foster become adopted dad to Edward and Emmett, and Jasper and Rose are in another family).
Of course, they are eventually caught, and Esme and Carlisle forbid them from seeing each other. Their symptoms of sleep deprivation comes back, lowered grades, slurred speech, bloodshot eyes, weight loss, not able to concentrate well, and only halfway making it through life. It is during this seperation though that they face some real issues, and start working towards healing themselves in ways they only could when they were ready. I love seeing their transformations and how their love evolved as well as their life outlook.
I give this 5 stars and really think that it should be published. I read it once in 2010 when I was looking for things to read after twilight, and then again this week because I am still thinking about it years later.
Hands down my favorite Twilight fan fiction I've read. This shit could easily be a movie or book by simply just changing the names, since there's no other Twilight connection besides location. Definately WAAAAY better then 50 Shades.
I've officially read this one 10 times! It gets better every time!!!!
This is the little taste of crack that will begin your consuming addiction into the wonderful world of Fan Fiction. Read it - I dare you.....
I can't say enough good things about this story. I love cussing Edward so much - and jealous Edward, I love him too. This was the first Fan Fiction I ever read and I just read it again, and I must say: I've read about a thousand books since I first read this story and Wide Awake is better than all of them put together. I wish AngstGoddess003 knew how wonderful she is.
I know that technically this isn't a book...but it should be. Wide Awake is the best of the best in fan fiction. It has a very special place in my heart and my only hope is that one day this will get published so I can add it to my must have collection!!
Wide Awake was the first fanfiction I read, I never knew fanfiction existed and suddenly a whole new world opened for me and I was overwhelmed by the numbers! Yes, there are fandoms for books, movies, even tv shows! Note: Today stats - Twilight is the 2nd most fictioned (sp?) series (over 200 thousand), only surpassed by Harry Potter's.
In spite of its Stephenie Meyers' Twilight saga roots, the similarities stop in the character's names; nothing else is the same, persons and places are OOC (out of cannon). AngstGoddess created a plot filled with angst, humor, lemons ... and lots and lots of cookies recipes!
Through the years I 'refined' my taste - what can I say, WA set high stakes! I established my boundaries - only HEA, only E&B etc but with each passing year I met some real good writing even in angst and tragedy genres so I opened my mind and read some off limits. But WA? It remains in my heart and once in a while I go back to it.
I don't see any demerit to Ms Meyers when I say WA is a story that stands on its own. After all, many are already out there, e.g.:
The Fifty Shades trilogy by E. L. James, formerly known as Master of the Universe (now turning into a movie!); The Dusty series by The Elizabeths, formerly known as Dusty; The Gabriel's Inferno trilogy by Sylvain Reynard, formerly known as The University of Edward Masen; The Sempre series by J. M. Darhower, formerly known as Emancipation Proclamation.
They are Goodreads authors just like Lissa Bryan, Christie Gucker, Kahlen Aymes...
These writers, encouraged by their fanfic readers ventured into the publishing world to show their stories.
To this day (Dec 2014) Wide Wake is still chosen as "Favorite All Time Fic" by the fanfic readers themselves which solidifies my theory that WA had/has/will have a loyal and solid demographic ready to 'get' Wide Awake - the book. And I proudly am one of them.
Thank you AngstGoddess003 for introducing me to the fascinating world f fanfiction. Long live to Wide Awake!
I searched around on the internet one day looking for a Twilight website my sister told me about and came across another site that proclaimed it was 'Twilight Fan Fiction Month'. I read through the summaries and clicked on the link to the first one I liked. It was Wide Awake.
I devoured every single word, see up until that point I had only read the books. To say that they left plenty out would be an understatement, I'm sure most Twilight fans agree with me on that point. But to see the beloved characters written in a way that was still them yet not them at all. I loved it! To this day I judge all new fics I read against this one, I try hard not to but I do!
One small piece of criticism, if I may...I read the story when it only had two chapters left. Then it went a year without posting. And I understand why, the criticism is not for the lack of posting, trust me. I just had a year to build up the ending, to make it larger than life in my mind and imagine every possible scenario for it. So, when the actual epilogue came out, it fell flat. Now, after having some distance and being able to re read it in it's entirety then I think it is a much better fit. So in all fairness, I think the issue is in my own mind and not so much in the story!
Either way I give it 5 stars with no hesitation and recommend it to anyone who will listen.
This was the first fan fiction I ever read. I read it years ago and it is one of these few fan fiction stories that play in its own leauge. It is one of the best one out there and if it ever get published i would buy it in a second. It is a long, heavy read, full of angst. And it is totally addictive. You can literalllly not put it down. I love this and i love this author's every work. She is amazing! Seriously, you should read it. I would almost say that this is better than Master of the Universe (Fifty Shades) and University of Edward Masen (Gabriel´s Inferno) or just as good, at the very least.
I have read WA by AngstGoddes003 three times and I'm currently rereading it for the fourth time. It's absolutely my all time favorite fanfic. It's 2-3 years ago when I found this masterpiece and I think I'll be reading WA for the rest of my life, not only because it's so good, but also for the great memories.
916 pages is just too much. I thought I could finish it, but nope, I lost interest. At first it was alright, but apart from too long the story is also to slooooow.
This is a very well-known, popular fanfiction based on Stephanie Meyer's Twilight saga. You can get it as a free download online. I was checking out fanfiction, and I read that this was the best Twilight fanfiction, hands down, so I had to read it. This is an all human fanfic, rated M for language and explicit sexual content (lemons). If you are turned off by raunchy and the idea of Edward Cullen saying the f-word in every sentence he utters, don't read it. It will also make you hungry for cookies so if you're on a diet, don't read it.
The characters names and personalities are (somewhat) based on Twilight. For example, Alice is Bella's cousin and is a fashionista, Esme is her aunt and very motherly, and Jasper is Alice's love interest, but Rosalie is his twin. Edward and Bella have traumatic pasts that prevent them from sleeping-hence the title-and they, like in Twilight, develop a strong love for one another. Once I downloaded this story and began reading, it was like reading Twilight all over again. I stayed up until 2:30am two nights in a row to read it as the dishes piled up. I can almost agree with some of the fans who say this story is better than Twilight. While Twilight provides some backdrop for the story, WA can stand alone and maybe even appeal to the Twilight-haters. I think it definitely should be published, but with the raunchy lemons I doubt it would get the same recognition and wide-spread readership as Twilight.
This Edward and Bella have issues, and the author doesn't let them get off easy just because they're supposed to be soulmates. While the threats to Twilight's Edward and Bella came mostly from without, their in danger from their own inner psyches. They realistically battle their histories and the impact it has on forming healthy relationships; the author is not uncomfortable exploring how their dysfunctional behavior may cause possible irreparable damage to their newfound love. There is also humor, and I lol'd a lot. It switches back and forth from Edward's to Bella's point of view, and Edward is just so snarky and funny. The author has given us insight into Edward's mind, thus making him more than just a dazzling cardboard cutout knight-in-shining-armor. I also really liked this fanfic because Jacob was absent from the story instead of standing in as a tired plot device to make two books into four-because we all know Bella was never going to pick Jacob over Edward! (Sorry, had to finally get that off my chest).
There are a few problems with the story. Edward's self deprecation and Bella's intimacy problems become a little tiring after awhile, although these problems are probably very realistic given their histories. I also think the author should have left out the epilogue-it wraps up very nicely right before that, giving the story closure and a great last line. The epilogue is very long and it leaves you with feeling that the events contained within are leading up to a sequel, but the author has vehemently refused to write one (according to her fanfiction.net FAQ page). Also, there are some distracting typos beginning in the middle of the book that the author refuses to fix.
In comparison to other fanfiction I've read, WA deserves four stars. I appreciate the way that the author has transformed the well-established characters of Edward and Bella into people with dimension. You can actually understand why Edward loves Bella in Wide Awake. While the author's inspiration from Twilight is definitely apparent throughout the novel, she truly created a transformative story that can stand on its own two feet.
During Christmas time about 2 years back, I was plagued with a wicked case of insomnia. How perfect then that I found this fic right around the same time. While the rest of my house slept, I padded around my kitchen, mirroring Bella's cookie baking obsession (much to my neighbors pleasure as they received ziplock bags full of freshly baked cookies every morning). I read, I baked, I read again.
The amazingness of this story is just near impossible to put into words. I highly recommend that anyone take some time (really, maybe I'm biased, but this story just seems like it needs to be read at 3am) and read this wonderful piece of fiction.
You will never look at night (or cookies) again in the same way.
best fan fiction I have ever read. It has lots of adult themes, so don't read it unless you are ready for that.
I wish she would get it published. Dealing with the emotional effects of an attack and insomnia (and the dream-like world you live in when you have it). And these two young adults who find each other at their worst moment and find comfort in each other.
Review: If you asked me to summarise this book in a few words I would say: Just Wow. This book is probably one of the most powerful pieces I've read this year.
This story is a fanfiction book based off Twilight characters, however the only thing these characters have in common with their counter parts are their names and looks. Everything from their background to their personalities is so so different, and I think that just shows the creativity of the author.
I think going into this book blind is the best way, so I won't reveal much about the plot, but basically both Bella and Edward have had traumatic experiences in their childhood and that causes some pretty bad psychological side effects which results in both of them refusing to sleep due to the nightmares and night terrors. This is how they bond and initially start talking, and is the basis of a 900 page story that will take you on an emotional rollercoaster.
The author of this story is AngstGoddess, which let me tell you is 1000% fitting. I would get anxious and angsty reading this book, and it definitely pulls on your heart strings and is so relatable for those of us that give everything to those we love for the sake of keeping them happy.
The character development in this story is so amazing. Honestly, thinking back to the beginning of the story is like thinking of a completely different book. The storyline and characters just change and develop so much in a positive way. I was a little let down by the Epilogue though. Without spoiling anything, there were some big changes in the main characters and I felt as if the epilogue kind of undid all that.
Lots of people have commented that this book should change the character names and be published as it's own novel, and I completely agree. That is exactly what happened to 50 Shades and although I haven't read 50 Shades I have heard about its poor lack of plot line, and honestly think this book has so much more. I have saved the PDF of this book so that I can go back and read it again in the future, as I know this is a story you could read over and over again and love different things about it each time.
Seriously. Go read this book. (P.S. book does contain smut scenes that are pretty crucial to the storyline so you won't be able to skip them if this is an issue for you)
Taking a whole new angle on the plight of Bella and Edward from Twilight, this FanFic explores the possibility of mental illness instead of vampirism. Though the prose is heavily laden with expletives and the romantic scenes are deplorably graphic, the premise is a good one. What if the star-crossed lovers were met yet again with circumstances beyond their control, and out of line with their hearts? Looking yet again at the plot of Romeo and Juliet, this romance considers the toll that abuse and neglect has on the psyche and the possibility of love. From the broken and desperate beginning to the trips to the therapist for sessions on the path to healing the reader is challenged to consider whether everyone is worthy of being loved, even in the trenches of life. With the absence of the love triangle in this version the reader is forced to focus on the brokenness and needed healing of the characters outside their relationship before they can begin to see each other in a new and healthy light. Dealing mainly in internal conflict the perspective shifts from the inside of one character’s mind to another, many times replaying the same scene with a new perspective and contends with the reality that the same truth retold can have quite a different meaning. If you want to get inside the mind of Edward and Bella with the Jacob and the supernatural set aside, this may be just the story for you - check it out!
There aren't many books that I finish and then immediately want to re read. However, this is one of them. It's just that good.
Let's get the obvious out of the way. Yes, it's fanfiction, Yes it's Twilight fan fiction but it is so much more. If you hate Twilight or Fanfiction I would still recommend this book to you. The versions of Edward and Bella in this book are nothing like those of Twilight. Edward has a filthy mouth, the ability to do wonderful things with his hands and just make girls swoon after him. Bella loves to bake, hates wearing skirts or low cut tops and even with her head down and hood up she still manages to capture the unwanted attention of the boys in Forks. In an unlikely scenario the two meet and end up having an awkward conversation that starts the beginning of a friendship so complex and powerful.
AngstGoddess has taken these characters and shaped them into wonderful, crazy, messed up people who I couldn't help but fall in love with. I laughed, I cried, I had an unusual desire to bake cookies and also eat cookies while reading this book.
AngstGoddess may never signs a book deal but I hope someone turns this into a tv series or something because it's just that good. If she did get a book deal I'd be first in line to buy this book.
Absolutely one of my favorite books from now on and a definite reread ! Very impressive writing and throughout research about psychology and PTSD . Very emotional, angsty ,sexy and sweet story. Don't mind the twilight names and locations, this has nothing to do with twilight at all ...and I'm happy about it because this book(or rather a trilogy,if it ever gets published) deserves its own identity . I will read anything written by this author and that's a lot coming from me.
Highly recommend to hunt it down online ,it's so much reading pleasure and for free!!!
The only reason I could not rated this story with 5 stars was fact that it took me forever to finish it. Usually I love long stories, but in this case I probably was not in the right mood. Overall, Wide awake is trully original story written in very good way. Author used a very detailed depiction of situations and feelings of main characters.
Readers got to read the story from Bella and Edward POV. Bella and Edward are teenagers in this story. They are both fragile and delicate individuals broken by terrible things that happened to them. Even though they want to be "normal", the are unable to assimilate into the society. Besides their issues, Edward is loving, caring and patient, trying to help Bella to overcome her problems. Bella is very determined but she also reminded me the real (sometimes annoying) Bella from New Moon or Eclipse in this story. But to be honest, after what she had to go through, it was understandable.
Storyline is very interesting with plenty of twists, emotional scenes and juicy parts. A very good read!
OK, I was asked to read this fanfiction and boy was it a doozy! Clocking in at 390,564 words, (Yep. Over 5 times longer than Sorcerer's Stone!) it is not a quick undertaking. While it started as Twilight fanfic, just about the only thing it has in common are the characters' names. Bella and Edward are not vampires, they are insomniacs, suffering from crappy childhoods and depression; therefore, I found their love story more believable and painful. The author admits that it could have been edited better, but that's part of the charm of this work, I felt like I was reading someone's diary or stream of consciousness. It was also neat to read the hundreds of comments made by fans after each chapter, as well as the author's own musings as the work developed. It wasn't perfect but it left me perfectly enamored with fanfiction as a new genre to discover.
Beautiful love story between two tortured people. It has its ups and downs as they help each other and go off on their own to overcome their demons.
The only reason this story is not getting 5 stars is because of its length (916 pages). I thought the scenes were drawn out - they just went on far longer than needed. And in a lot of cases we heard scenes from both their prospectives so it was just went on longer x's two. There was just so much damn detail in everything like their thoughts and everyday life. Still it was well written and I very much enjoyed it. It would make a fantastic book if it was shortened.
I just loved Edward in this story. His brain filter & his thoughts were freaking hilarious at times.
This is not a book. It's a fic. A fic on fanfiction.net. A fic based on Twilight. Dun Dun DUUUUNN!!
And this is me saying I don't fucking care in the least because even though it uses Meyer's characters' names, it's a story of its own. Not only is it original and deep and it sucker punches you in the guts but there's a chapter where she gives you freaking bibliography on the psychological aspects and you realize just how much research she did. 6 years into the future and that chapter still haunts me.
She's brilliant, I love her and this story hurts like mad. Read it!
Side Note: She has a PDF file for download of this entire fic uncensored at her livejournal page (alongside her other completed fics).
This is the fic that started it all. It was 2009 and I was looking for a good read. This one was it. It's the fic by which all others are measured. Once I started reading this, I COULD NOT STOP. I missed sleep, I postponed work and I hibernated until it was finished. It was also the beginning of a never-ending love of well written fanfic. I was so lucky to stumble upon this story and then find other great stories and authors to follow after. The addiction has not ended and the list of other stories to read has only grown.
I've read this before many years ago, reading it chapter by chapter. Don't know why, but I suddenly had the urge to read it again.
This is the only fan fiction I have ever read and like the first time I read it, I was pleasantly suprised by it. If it weren't for the names, you honestly wouldn't know. Her writing style is also really good, probably better than some authors I have read over the years.
After reading it, I now realise why I took a sudden dislike to Jessica in the films haha. And sweary Edward is sooo much better.
If others can reword their fanfictions and get them published, this one DEFINITELY needs to be done. I hope one day it will be. It is one of the most original things I have read in a LONG time, and you can tell that the author did a lot of research for it. She put a lot of time and effort into it, and it's not just 'another fanfiction'. I absolutely LOVE this book! Even if you're not a Twilight fan, this is definitely work your time.
One of my most guilty pleasures. Yes, it is a twilight fanfic. I love this story. Fantastically written for the most part and very satisfying in its scope and resolution. I believe I have read this about 4 times now and I have no doubt I will revisit it again. I sometimes confuse scenes from this book with the original twilight book -it beautifully captures elements of who each of the characters are in the book and just pushes them to their limits.
