Beyond the Firefly Field
By the time he was fourteen, Clayton Curtis realized his whole life would be boring.
Living in a middle-of-nowhere piece of the country would have been boring enough, but it was also the land that time forgot. Due to inherit the family home passed down through many generations, Clayton felt doomed to a life in the stone age. Then everything changed when a new subdivision was built a mile from his house.
With scrap wood, he and his friends built a large tree house complex. From high in the tree, they saw a glowing faraway field one night and were determined to find out what it was. What they discovered there was beyond epically wonderful, and the boys knew it must be kept a secret. They quickly became obsessed with going to see it often, even though being there was changing them and herding them toward a decision they didn't want to make.
They would soon either have to be willing to do whatever was necessary to keep the secret or never go there again.

Fabulous read for 8-14, very boy-friendly read, too. Building with wood and Adventures, very boy-friendly. Which is why the title is about Firefly Field and not Faeries. Shhh.
The text about the Firefly culture was a little slow in one area where it was a lot of information and my brain went "yadda, yadda, back to something ELSE please" And right after that, the author DID do something else, and a little further into the book, I saw why the extra load of information was necessary to the plot. So, I stand corrected.
The time between books cleverly mirrors the kids' wait for seasonal change! I would definitely recommend this to (parents of) kids of the right age. I would probably read the entire series if I could. I just might! Because age is just a number!

I received this book from Goodreads. This was not only a good fantasy story but it had science facts, studying tips, and how working together can get some things done. There was a bully who got his due, an evil farmer who in the end was a friend and older people helping younger people. It will make a great Christmas gift.
