Faced with an abhorrent betrothal, Cailin Macmillan flees her father’s castle and quickly learns that a woman traveling alone in Medieval Scotland is an easy target for ruthless English soldiers. When Highland patriot Connor Fraser comes to her aid, his steadfast dedication to king and country is challenged by his overwhelming desire to protect Cailin—even if he must marry her to do so.
Accused of murdering one of her attackers and determined to rely on her own resourcefulness, Cailin dresses as a lad, intent on seeking refuge at the camp of Robert the Bruce. Can she elude an enemy from her past—a vindictive English lord bent on her utter demise—or will she fall prey to his carnal intent and be executed for a crime she did not commit?
PLEASE NOTE THERE ARE THREE AUTHORS WITH SAME NAME (B.J. SCOTT) MY BOOKS ARE HISTORICAL ROMANCE NOVELS
With a passion for history and romance, I have several exciting works in progress. Each manuscript offers a blend of passion, adventure and where appropriate, a dab of comic relief. Carefully researched historical facts are woven into the storyline, providing a backdrop from which steamy romance, gripping plots and vivid characters—dashing alpha heroes and resourceful, beguiling heroines you can't help but admire—spring to life. I also write contemporary, paranormal, time travel and romantic suspense.
After several years in the nursing and child and youth work fields, I met and married my knight in shinning armor and he whisked me away to his castle by the sea. Actually, it is a century old home in a small town on the shore of Lake Erie, where we reside with our three dogs and a cat.
While born in Canada, my ethnic background( grandparents back) were from Scotland, Ireland and England. Perhaps the reason for my facination with anything Celtic. In the fourth grade, I discovered the work of C.S Lewis, and was hooked. When I am not writing, working at my childcare job or on my small business, you will find me reading, camping or antique hunting.
I am a PAN member of Romance Writers of America, World Romance Writers, Celtic Heart Romance Writers, Savvy Authors and several writer critique groups.
About a 1/3 of the way through and it started out pretty good. I'm not feeling the heroine (Cailin). Her thoughts, feelings, and actions are inconsistent. One minute she is shoving her tongue down the hero (Connor) throat, following him in hopes to get away from her tyrant father and a lunatic English soldier hellbent on hanging her, and yet when Connor helps her, she refuses to listen, refuses to help the men that are risking their lives for her, all because of propriety that has already been thrown out the door the minute she decided to leave her father's castle dressed as a boy. If her actions were more consistent, I'd like it better. At least Connor is consistent, as he has said all along that he doesn't want love or a family, he may lust after her and have the initial feelings of love in the actions he does and the words that he says. He's doing what he can to keep her safe and she won't share a room with him for propriety's sake, even when soldiers are at the same inn as they are. I don't mind strong-willed independent women, but ones that don't think just make me cringe.
The second 1/2 of the book definitely made up for the first part. Cailin developed nicely and she became a more consistent character, still strong-willed and independent, but she knew when to use that to her advantage, not put everyone in harms way. One thing that I never gor though was the fact that the bad English guy kept threatening her and after Connor is "killed", the story jumps at least 5 days and she's being held in England, so what happened during those 5 days? I just can't imagine that Bad English Guy just throws her back on horse and trapes across Scotland and England for 5 days and....nothing, not after 3 years of anger and chasing her through Scotland for nearly a year. Not that I would want to see the rape of a pregnant woman, but maybe some indication as to why he never followed through on his repeated threats and attempts
Overall, a good story, like I said took a while to get into the heroine, but worth it in the end.
In terms of style, content and setting, this book reminded me of Julie Garwood's Highlander novels, and I enjoyed it just as much.
This is a solid story, one that captured my attention early on and held it. Set in the time of William Wallace, Sir Simon Fraser, and Robert the Bruce (who all make appearances), this is a story of larger than life heroes and the women who love them. Connor Fraser is a man committed to his cause who doesn't want the responsibility of having a woman and children of his own; Cailin Macmillian is a fiery woman who craves the love and affection she never got from her domineering, disappointed father.
This was a fun book to read for a girl who cut her teeth on those Scottish historicals way back when. I always did love a man in a kilt, and, after reading Highland Legacy, it's apparent that I still do!
This is a brother Scottish romance series. Characters are introduced that you expect to see in the other books. There are bits of factual history woven into the story but nothing overwhelming. The author also uses Gaelic through out the book. The romance is the usual heated attraction but denial due to past circumstances. If you are sensitive about rape & bodily harm do not read this book. Oddly the terrible table manners stood out the most to me.
Read it in one day couldn't put it down. Conner was a little pig headed but you can over look it. Cailin is a strong lady lead and I loved her all the way through! Enjoy!
No halfway measures in this story; it practically jumps off the pages with action, heart-in-the-throat close calls, and love scenes that heat the blood and send it racing. Highland Legacy reaches out and grabs one’s attention and emotions and doesn’t let go until the very end.
Eighteen-year-old Cailin McMillan, feisty, intelligent, and tenacious, decides the outside world she knows little about has to be better than her father’s cruelty and his despicable plans for her. She finds the horrors and hardships she suffers along with the danger that nips at her heels often rival her father’s treatment. The tapestry of her life is dark indeed, until Connor Fraser, a Highlander warrior comes to her rescue. He brings a touch of light to her dark story—a light that grows to a glowing golden love, albeit, not without going through the fires of refinement. To her he is magnificent—one of God’s masterpieces.
Connor Fraser has pledged fealty to Robert the Bruce, King of Scotland. He knows death stalks him as he rides into battle after battle. Consequently, he wants no wife that could be his widow at any moment; nor does he want to love someone. The hurt of losing his parents and two brothers is still a raw, aching pain in his heart.
He's laird of the Fraser clan since Alasdair chose not to accept the responsibility when their oldest brother died. Big, crude, insensitive Alasdair is older than Connor, but leadership is not for him. He sees the world from a very different angle than many, but he never fails in his loyalty to Connor. Bryce, the younger brother, is far more civilized yet just as loyal and good in a fight as his brothers. These three are a force to be reckoned with.
Set in the early fourteenth century when England was determined to place Scotland under English rule, Highland Legacy bristles with hostilities, intrigues, and vicious inhumane treatment of people. During this era, English law allowed nobility to get away with murder and all kinds of horrific treatment especially to women. It curdles the blood to see the absolute lack of value placed on women during this time.
The antagonist, Lord Borden, borders on insanity in his vendetta against Cailin. He and Cailin’s father are the darkest threads in the tapestry of the heroine’s life.
But, while extreme cruelty stalked the land at one end of the continuum, at the other end, extreme love that knows no bounds is strong and true, a bright golden thread that eclipses the darkness. The breathtaking, earth-shattering love Connor and Cailin share is spellbinding. WOW!
B. J. Scott’s Highland Legacy is exciting, graphic, sometimes humorous, and always gives a sense of urgency. While not a long story, it is chocked full of compelling characters and has all the elements one expects to find in a historical set in the Highlands during this era. Ms. Scott’s writing style engages the senses and emotions without let up. Good reading!

I think in another life I lived in medieval times. I am so drawn to these types of books that I can’t seem to get enough of them. While in Ireland touring the castles, I fantasized about all the characters I read about real and make believe (although to me they are real) living in said castles. I could see everything about them. So once again I am drawn to the pure title of a book.
I wasn’t disappointed. Robert the Bruce a big part of medieval times always adds the true element making any story so much more believable. From the beginning of Ms. Scott’s tale with the Sexy Highland Warriors in kilts…Hot…Hot…Hot you will find that your heart is captured by the sheer romance that only they can bring to a story (Sean Connery…enough said).
Caitlin MacMillan spirited and smart, finds herself surrounded by the darkness of life that only greedy parent can bring who knows not what love is. Her father has betrothed her to a just as dark man who is three times her age. Although I would like to think that somewhere it can be a possibility it just isn’t working her and right fully so. She needs love, light, life. Not the horrors, hardships, danger that is her life and how she is treated by her father and soon to be betrothed.
In walks Conner Fraser. Highland warrior to rescue her from the “dark” life she has now. Can we say…Sexy as hell, wildly living life on the edge? He has vowed that he will fight alongside Robert the Bruce. Having already lost his parents and two brothers he doesn’t want to get married and leave a young bride behind if something were to happen to him. But once he meets Caitlin even though he tries to tell himself he doesn’t want a wife; he somehow starts to question his life in general. In other words she gets to him. Caitlin who only wants to escape her bleak existence finds herself drawn to Conner. He is after all oh so sexy….
Needless to say I fear that they are both going to find out that they need each other to find that completeness. Caitlin finds that there is life away from her father and the darkness as she sees the acceptance that the Fraser clan gives to her showing her love. She goes from one extreme to the other. She is enthralled with the fierce loyalty that the Fraser brothers have to each other as she was never privy to this in her old life.
The mountains, battles, castles, clans, smells, foods, people and life in the highlands makes me want to go back in time to live there as Ms. Scott had a way of bringing it to life. I loved the solid story that captured this romantic girl’s heart. I found this simply irresistible from start to finish with the passionate fire of this love story. Did I happen to mention the Sexy Highland Warriors in kilts?
Cailin Macmillan is appalled to learn her father has arranged for her to marry a Laird thrice her age. Determined to marry for love or not at all, she flees the keep, only to be accosted by brutal English soldiers intent on raping her.
Highland patriot, Connor Fraser, comes to her defense, and escorts her back to the castle. However, upon hearing that she is being sought for the murder of the soldier Connor killed, Cailin leaves her lifelong home dressed as a lad. She follows Connor and his brothers who carry a missive to Robert the Bruce, self-proclaimed King of Scotland. It is with the Bruce that Cailin hopes to seek refuge from her would-be captors.
Connor has vowed revenge for the death of his family, and has no time or inclination to marry. Nevertheless, in order to keep Cailin safe, he declares her his wife, with the intention of an annulment when they reach their destination.
With a vindictive English lord on Cailin’s trail to bring her to England for murder, Connor is torn between his steadfast dedication to king and country, his desire for Cailin, and his need to protect her from the hated English.
Highland Legacy is a book that is impossible to put down. The wealth of intrigue, horror, and historical accuracy makes for a riveting tale. The characters are well developed, the plot intricate. Ms. Scott has written a tense and spellbinding debut novel. This book is without a doubt, one of the finer stories of Medieval Scotland I’ve ever read.
Connor Fraser and Cailin Macmillian will capture your heart. Their passion, strength and honor will remain with you long after you’ve read the last page of their remarkable story. Don’t miss out on this one.
Highland Legacy by BJ Scott is the compelling historical romance of Cailin Macmillan and laird Connor Fraser. Cailin runs away from a cruel father bent on selling her to an Englishman known for his brutal treatment of women.
When Scottish patriot, laird Connor Fraser sees her being attacked by two English soldiers, he kills one and wounds the other to protect her. Although he does not know her, when he learns she is to be executed for murdering the English soldier, he rescues her and takes her with him on his journey to meet Robert the Bruce, future king of Scotland. To ensure her safety he marries her even though his allegiance and duty are to his king and he has no plans of taking a wife.
Their gradual attraction and ultimate love is put to the test over and over as things beyond their control tear them apart and threaten their lives.
Not only does Ms. Scott create a heart stirring romance, she also incorporates actual people from the time of William Wallace (Braveheart) and Scotland's King Robert the Bruce in such a way that you feel you are actually there witnessing events of history unfold. The plot is layered with love, honor, betrayal and cruelty, and holds you fast throughout the story. The villain in the story is so totally deplorable that you want to cheer when the story ends with a happy ever after.
I give this book 5 stars and recommend it to lovers of historical romance as well as those interested in Scottish history.
The debut novel of BJ Scott will captivate you the moment Cailin Macmillan, the feisty beauty with a fiery Jane Eyre-like temperament, enchants Connor Fraser, a strong-willed masculine Scottish highlander duty bound to keep her safe.
This book was an emotional roller coaster ride that I never wanted to stop. I laughed, gasped, frowned, sighed and cried. This novel is filled with romance, secrets, sensuality, captivating dialogue, and a great villain to keep every character on their toes.
Scott is a brilliant writer. The geographical descriptions and aesthetical features of this period piece made it a pleasure to read. I highly recommend this debut novel to all fans of historical romance. They won’t be disappointed. HIGHLAND LEGACY will prove why Scott's work is so incredibly irresistible---- her dynamic characters jump off the page, and her attention to historical details is so rich you feel you've stepped back in time.
I LOVED this endearing, passionate love story and I know readers will yearn for her next brilliantly set up installment. (To tell the truth, I’m personally rooting for it to feature Bryce and Fallon. That’s a love story that will pack a punch!)
Excellent start to this series. I loved the fast pace of this story. Connor Fraser and Cailin were really strong characters. I loved Cailin's fortitude and determination. Connor suffers so much through his life along with his brothers, that it just all touches your heart. I liked the fact that this Highland Romance was not too Vanilla. When I hear people whine about some sex in romances...it makes me shake my head and want to suggest they go to the young adult section or go to the teen Romance and purchase books. This is a full adult Highland Romance that has action and passionate love scenes. It was exceptional!
I loved it and I look forward to the rest of the stories in this series. I congratulate the author in writing such a great story. Keep up the excellent writing!
This one wasn't all that bad. The heroine wasn't a complete simpering idiot, and while the hero was a pigheaded idiot most of the time, he had his sweet moments and came 'round in the end (don't they all?). The villain was a bit over the top. I was reminded of Jack Randall from the Outlander series, but with more a Snidely Whiplash flair. Still, the romance was sweet, the action fairly engaging. I'm not sure it's one I'd ever bother with again, but it didn't make me angry or bored, so I count that as a slight win.
Loved the characters--even the evil ones were well written. Although it might not be historically accurate, the events were conceivable. The hero was my kind of highlander--a true hero and the heroine was gutsy and courageous--even if at times a bit negligent of her own safety. The book clips along at a fast pace, but is still detailed enough that you get to know the characters. I can't wait to read the stories of the other brothers. I would recommend this to anyone who loves medieval romance.
Excellent debut novel by this author. Highland Legacy offers two main characters who love wildly, live on the edge and understand they're meant to be together despite mounting adversity. Rich in historic detail and dialogue, the story will leave you wanting to spend more time in Ms. Scott's Highlands.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I have wanted to read it for a long time. And it lived up to ALL my expectations. B.j. writes so well. You are in the Highlands right along with them. If you like Suzan Tizdale books? You will love B.j. Scott!! I couldn't put it down. And can't wait for the next book. Get ready to fall in love with the Fraser's!! I highly recommend this book!!!!!
Highland Legacy is an enjoyable Highlander romance. The book is full of action, suspense, and romance. There is sex, but it is tastefully written. Connor is the ultimate Highland hero that you instantly love. Cailin is the heroine that hates relying on others, but learns to do so. This is a book where you also like the side characters and want to know more. Luckily this is a series.
The story had several twists and turns which kept me intrigued and invested. The characters were believable and the story was well written. I will look for more books from this author.
I enjoyed reading this book. It has a great wounded hero protecting his heart and a fearless heroine. After much strife and a few battles, they are able to make it home safely. I look forward to reading about the other brothers.
This is the first book I read from this author and I have to say I really enjoyed the story. This the first book of The Fraser Brothers Trilogy. I will most definitely purchase the other books in this series.
I enjoyed this book very much. It takes place during the time of Wm Wallace and Robert the Bruce. I give it 4.5 out of 5 stars! The ending will have you swooning when it comes to the hero!
Except for a couple of modern words (e.g., anti-inflamatory used by a clan healer), this was a pretty good book. I will definitely pick up the next book this author writes.
I loved all three of B.J. Scott's books. I would highly recommend these to anyone who likes great love stories in the fascinating world of ancient Scotland.
I found a new favorite author. It had me on the first chapter. There's a lot of action, some sorrow and a whole lot of love. I'm looking forward to the next book of the series. It's a must read!!
