An accessible and inspiring guide to good leadership based on a popular lecture that Dr. Chopra has presented to thousands Very few of us are leaders all the time, in everything we do, but all of us can become a leader in specific situations. In a committee, in business, at a social club or at a religious institution, we all find a time in our lives when we can lead. Few people set out knowingly to become leaders, rather they see a need and they find a way of dealing with it, and often others choose to follow their example.
Based on a talk that he has given to more than 60,000 people in at least seven countries, the “LEADERSHIP” mnemonic that Dr. C hopra explains is as follows: L - listen well. E - empathy. A - attitude. D - dreams and decisiveness. E - effectiveness. R - resilience. S - a sense of purpose. H - humility and humor. I - integrity and imagination. P - principles, and willingness to pack other people’s parachutes. Drawing from his experience as Faculty Dean for Continuing Education for Harvard Medical School as well as the writings and lives of great leaders throughout history, this easy-to-read, inspiring book will serve as a reminder and a guide to becoming leaders in our own lives.
Dr. Sanjiv Chopra is Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School. For 12 years he was the Faculty Dean for Continuing Education at Harvard Medical School. He is also a bestselling author and sought after motivational speaker. He has seven books, including The Big Five, Live Longer, Live Better, Brotherhood, Leadership By Example, and Dr. Chopra Says. In addition, he has over one hundred publications to his credit and he has received numerous awards including the Excellence in Teaching Award from Harvard Medical School.
This is a wonderful book on leadership, teaching by telling stories of individuals who became great leaders. Although unfamiliar with many of the stories, they swept me up and taught me. These examples were gleaned from all over the world so some names may not be familiar, but their stories are inspiring. Some of my favorite thoughts include the following:
Leaders leave a legacy. They never strive to be legends. (p. 197)
No leader sets out to be a leader. People set out to live their lives, expressing themselves fully. When that expression is of value, they become leaders. So the point is not to become a leader. The point is to become yourself, to use yourself completely--all your skills, gifts and energies--in order to make your vision manifest. You must withhold nothing. You must, in sum, become the person you started out to be, and to enjoy the process of becoming. (p. 188-189)
Leadership This is a short book written by the Dean of Harvard medical school, with each chapter describing what a letter means in the word “leadership”
The ten key principles of leadership: - Listening - listen 10 times speak once - empathy - attitude - dream - effective - resilient - sense of purpose - humility humor - integrity imagination - people skills
Some great quotes: - It takes 20 years to build the reputation but 5 mins to ruin it. - Your integrity is your destiny. - Go where there is no path and leave a track. - The biggest limit of your impact is your imagination. - An interesting story about Merk giving out their new eye doseas drugs for free the communities that could not afford that, which helped build the reputation and attracted new talent in the long term. - Leadership is about being yourself. When your opinion is being valued you became a leader
Leadership by Example is a good starter book for anyone. It dispels the theory that leaders are born by giving examples of ordinary people who did extraordinary things because the situations in which they found themselves demanded it/inspired it. A few friends and I are reading various leadership books because we figured out we should, and this book was great for that: most leaders don't consider themselves leaders. Leaders don't even seek to lead. It's a book about character and every day leadership with some good stories you've heard before (Churchill, Gandhi) and a bunch you haven't.
Book : Leadership by Example Author: Dr. Sanjiv Chopra
Same collection of words but how one perceives it, changes the world! 🤗
Economics teaches that, 'People are a resource' but, it is books like this that clarifies the true meaning that economists probably wanted humans to learn; 'People are a resource and one must first learn to be that for others'. Do not look to 'USE' people, instead learn to 'BE' a resource for others. 😊
Leadership is all about finding your bliss and following your calling, thinking of greater good. It is in the attempt of doing so, that great leaders are born. 💯
The book is about leadership but it is nothing short of a guide on living a life of fulfilment. A plethora of legendary examples from across the globe are bound to inspire the 'leader' in every reader! 😇
YOU, yes you whoever is reading this review right now... trust me when I say that good books are a beacon of light. You have no idea that which book and in-it which line will change your life forever! So, read, read and read a lot but be sure to pick books that are worthy of your time and mind! Read-on to make a life, to be a life and to change a life! 🎯
Who should (or when to) read this: Anyone trying to draw leadership inspiration from great leaders in history
Nick’s Major takeaway(s): Great leaders do what they do not seeking to be great, but simply because they believe they are the right thing to do. If you’re trying to be a legend you won’t create a legacy.
Notable Quotes: “Leadership is about being yourself. When your opinion is being valued you became a leader” – Dr. Sanjiv Chopra & David Fisher “Leaders leave a legacy. They never strive to be legends.” “Leadership is about being yourself. When your opinion is being valued you became a leader” “The point is to become yourself, to use yourself completely--all your skills, gifts and energies--in order to make your vision manifest. You must withhold nothing. You must, in sum, become the person you started out to be, and to enjoy the process of becoming.” ““Leadership is about the life you live and the stories you tell, that’s what influences people”

Lots of powerful examples of leadership in this short book. Based on the Great Man theory of leadership, Sanjiv Chopra, identifies 10 principles or characteristics evident in many leaders. He uses the word LEADERSHIP as a mnemonic acronym to help remember the characteristics. A good read for reflecting on the manifestations of leadership in one's character and ethic.
Leadership is defined differently by people everywhere, leaders and followers alike. This text provides the authors meaning of leadership in short snippets of leaders that fits him nemonic for the word leadership. A short worthwhile time and investment to read and take lessons from.
I think the whole book can be a just couple of chapters with the information found in it... But it was OK I like it had stories connected to the chapter.. Not great though
A simple little book. Excellent reminder of important principles of leadership such as listening and empathy. The book gives examples of these traits but does not offer in depth details.
A boss sets targets a leader sets examples... A beautiful book with wonderful inspiring examples on how to be a layman and become a leader by strong determination amd inspiring vision...!!
Maybe good if you've never read any history, biography or leadership stuff before. Otherwise rehash of stories you've likely heard before about Churchill, Gandhi, Yunnus, etc.
This is a short book but it needs to be read slowly, or else you're going to miss the point. It is too dense with quotes and stories, and little in between which honestly meant I dinged it a star. There really did need to be more reflection here, breathers in between chapters.
That is my only complaint though, because the rest of it is brilliant and if you are listening and reading with all of you, this book could prompt you to real change. It certainly kicked off some for me, and I'm grateful.
A very good reading that offers a Decalogue of attributes -in the form of mnemonics, using the acrostic LEADERSHIP- that distinguishes leaders of our time and of yore. The book is built upon stories of outstanding individuals that can serve as a beacon for everyone (as we all face the opportunity and privilege to lead at least someone in our lives, starting by ourselves), and also upon inspirational and deep quotations of prominent people that have left their legacy for future generations.
Like many popular leadership books, this one is full of excellent quotes and inspiring stories, but the writing is rather elementary. The ideas are solid, but far from revolutionary. It is a quick read and a good reminder of some very important principles.
Full of shining examples of people who have led others to the greater good. Wonderful read that encourages readers to do the same. Make a difference by what you say and do!
