There is a war brewing between the Mother Goddess Efome and her ex-lover, Unyada. Efome's only hope is the Gola, a sacred blade that has been bound to the soul of one of Unyada's most powerful Demons, a shape-shifting Lyun. The Lyun has turned her back on her master, in hopes of being free to be with her true love. She has the support of the Humsan Demons, but is up against the powerful Animize, and the four wicked Sisters. To kill Unyada, she must stab the Gola through his host, the Shield's, heart. There is only one both the Lyun and the Shield have been missing for over a thousand years. Can Mia, a mysterious girl with no memories of her past, find them both before Unyada strikes?
No spoilers, I promise -- but this book was a really fun read.
I loved the premise of deities having lost their way, that their "servants" in the Lyun must carry out the deities' bidding. We get a really good sense of what the world is like, and how magic works within it, in both familiar magical creatures and new takes on older ideas.
Some of the dialogue/narration was a little modern in comparison with the genre/concept, especially with the way that the other portions of the book were written -- but that is more of a personal preference thing.
I got to meet the author at a local con and really enjoyed our conversation about the fantasy genre in general, as well as "Demonheart" specifically. Can't wait to see what comes next!
