This classic book gives us an opportunity to learn about Christ, his work and his death. Based upon Romans 8:34, Goodwin presents to us the Lord Jesus Christ, the example and the object of justifying faith. If the term Christology is a new one to you, then this book will help understand what it means. In true Christian Heritage style, it is attractively laid out with headings and subdividers to assist reading. The foreword is provided by J. I. Packer and a helpful introduction provided by Mark Jones.
Thomas Goodwin known as 'the Elder', was an English Puritan theologian and preacher, and an important leader of religious Independents. He served as chaplain to Oliver Cromwell, and was imposed by Parliament as President of Magdalen College, Oxford in 1650. Christopher Hill places Goodwin in the ‘main stream of Puritan thought’.
*The low rating is for this edition* not for Goodwin's magnificent work. Christian Heritage / Christian Focus Publications states that the only modifications made to the original text are with regard to subheadings, shortening sentences, and the manner of biblical citation. This is rubbish - the whole text has been utterly incompetently modernized, replacing the original 'thou' with 'you' throughout, but without changing the 17th C singular verbs. It is basically unreadable - filled with nonsense phrases like: '...hast not you the heart to trust him?' and 'You art but one poor sinner'. For goodness' sake!! Either you keep to the original absolutely or you modernize competently - and if the latter, you also don't lie about it.
